Below is a press release from the green party today about the youth rates bill. I expect they are only still supporting it in the hope that they will be able to pass ammendments (reversing the changes the select committee made). I expect Sue Bradford will withdraw the bill if the 200 hours experience clause stays in it – the bill ammended as it is would actually entrench discrimination against youth into legislation, rather than as now where it is just set by regulation.

I really like this paragraph from todays green party press release:

“Certainly MPs such as myself and those on the committee needed much more ‘orientation and training’ when entering Parliament and no-one suggested our wages be docked in the interim”

Greens back youth rates bill despite tinkering

Press Release: Green Party 25 July 2007
Greens back youth rates bill despite tinkering

The Minimum Wage (Abolition of Age Discrimination) Amendment Bill is back in the House today and the Green Party is urging all parties to support its process through Parliament although the bill has been altered.

“I’m upset some young workers would still have to face extremely unfair and low youth rates. Two hundred hours at the youth pay rate, as suggested by the select committee, might not sound long to some older people but for young and part-time workers including those still at school it could mean up to nine months on low pay,” Green Party Industrial Relations spokesperson and sponsor of the Bill, Sue Bradford says.

Although the Transport and Industrial Relations Committee, by majority vote, has declined some of the Greens efforts to end age-based discrimination in employment, Ms Bradford says she is heartened the committee supports the basic premise on which the Bill is based.

“I wanted to amend the Minimum Wage Act 1983 by removing the opportunity of employers to set minimum wage rates defined by age of workers with particular reference to 16 and 17 year olds and the majority of the committee believed ‘the premise upon which it [the Bill] is based is right’. This gives me hope that as the Bill passes through its further stages, compromise can be reached to strengthen it and protect the young of this country.

“Many have already worked at checkout counters, takeaway outlets, petrol stations and elsewhere for long periods before turning 16 and the argument used by some in the select committee that young workers need orientation and training in a new job is not always true.

“Certainly MPs such as myself and those on the committee needed much more ‘orientation and training’ when entering Parliament and no-one suggested our wages be docked in the interim,” Ms Bradford says.

Im sure youre all well aware that Helen Clark has disliked Mr Field ever since he started standing up for his beliefs. With that said.. do you think its possible that the police were influenced to find him guilty of anything??
How about the fact that the police got 3 witnesses to change their stories?

  3. Tane Says:

How did National vote on abolishing age discrimination?

  4. kaylamesha Says:

hi santa, you must be looking forward to christmas… I have always been a staunch labour supporter but after reading the article, it has changed my views, medias good at twisting the truth.
I also agree with santa that the police were influenced to charge Mr Field.Take a look at our PM, if she can get away with a speeding ticket and fraud, she must have a hand on the cops.

  5. Graeme Edgeler (1359) Says:

Tane – the Human Rights Act was passed in 1993 as a Government Bill, so I’m guessing in favour…

  6. Frank Says:

WHO requested the legal opinion into the Noel Ingram QC report on Taito Philip Field that caused Police Commissioner Howard Broad to open an investigation nearly 12 months ago?

It must have ben a shock to him after he had successfully buried a complaint 6 weeks previously that alleged Taito Philip Field, as MP and Minister at the time of the alleged offense, was in the Service of the Crown and thus allegedly breached those sections of the Crimes Act devoted to people in this category.

  7. kaylamesha Says:

Gosh, just because Taito voted for this Bill, why does everyone think he has an ulterior motive, or it has to do with Thais? Yes, I know it was supposed to be funny but you can only ‘stretch it so far’….At least he stood up for us against the anti-smacking Bill and that Therapeutics Bill…

He was probably the hero of the hour standing up for us while others hid behind their Leaders’ shadow. Quite a number of MP’s wanted to be like Taito when it came to those Bills but noooo they had the ‘You do what I say’ threats…

We can beat a man when he’s down and then prop him up, give him a slap on the back saying ‘jolly good show’, ‘thanks for that’ then kick him in the guts and he’s back down again…we are all guilty of that, as we’ve passed judgment on him before the truth has really come out. Talk about crucifying him…. ‘He, who has not sinned, cast the first stone’…

  8. santa Says:

hey frank, who are we talking about..broad or Mr Field??

  9. edmond Says:

I have been following the Field saga and its become apparent that this is and has always been a conspiracy by the PM and her party to get rid of the MP,afterall, hes crossed the floor several times.Read the Investigate magazine that was published 2 weeks ago where the MP has finally broken his silence and you be the judge.
Any MP or Minister who goes against the PM is doomed.Lets wait and see

  10. Calculus Says:

    Santa,
This is exactly what is wrong about the whole saga. I don’t know what your talking about the 3 witnesses but as I have stated before the investigate article opens up a lot of unanswered questions which show Taito in a very different light than the mainstream media wants to talk about. As I have always suspected he is probably the most upright member in her whole crooked bunch. The same old theme comes up either you agree with Helengrad or you finished. What about getting Duncan Garner onto the case to start to follow up the things raised in the article-he has done a sterling job on DB-P.

    Another question ?
I have beltway reason to know that the cabinet minister [that is not named] in the investigate article that made the personal attack on Taito happens to be none other than Chris Carter [who happens to be in a civil union !!!]

What about someone finding out what he actually said to Taito????

    Also DPF,

Mr. Broad has gone very quiet lately and I note that no one has picked up the gem I deliberately let slip a week or so back that he possibly had a very similar experience to Doone in a vehicle except HE MAY HAVE BEEN DRIVING.!!!!

H1 needs him quite urgently and she will defend him like DB-P because he knows some things that I also alluded to previously.
    Regards Calculus.

  11. kaylamesha Says:

I agree with you Calculus… Mr DB-P denies everything this entire week and then caught out tonight…Let’s see what excuse PM will make tomorrow to keep him on rather than ousting him as she did with Taito… If he can get away with putting tennis balls in people’s mouths, I bet he can get away with this..probably a slap on the wrist from the PM with a comment like.’naughty boy, you’ve been caught again, now we have to find another MP to sling mud at…hmmm what else we can dish up on Taito’…

There’s no consistency in this labour government….Somehow MR DB-P reminds me of a sheep…totally in need of a shag or is it a dag?? Anyway something needs to be chopped…

A thought though on the Investigate article on Taito…no one seemed to talk about it in mainstream media after the article was released..there were a few comments in the papers, but that was it…

I mean the media literally tore Taito apart for the past 2 years and yet when Taito decided to defend himself by speaking out in this magazine-it didn’t seem to be a tasty morsel for the media frenzy to sink their teeth in…Maybe the truth was hard to swallow.. try asking Mr DB-P

  12. Frank Says:

Santa. Sorry I was not clear. I referred to Broad.

However they were probably both surprised when the Helen $1/2 M Ingram report (with narrow terms of reference) was reopened.

  13. santa Says:

yeah…I am sure Helen Clark set that enquiry to fail… she didn’t care that she was going to waste taxpayers money as long as she got what she wanted…

As for DB-P, he definitely needs a shag, bloody moron
