Must have just missed you DPF - my in-laws took my wife and I there for lunch yesterday! Nice place, but the steak sandwich was less than memorable! I'm looking forward to a round of golf there on my next visit to Christchurch though.

I have used Wotif, but have turned to New Zealand last minute site Ezibed.com over Wotif and Rates to Go, generally because its New Zealand based and you keep the NZ coffers full, not the Oz coffers. I think it's a faster site, and they have a pretty good selection of hotels/motels to choose from. It looks like they are expaning internatioanlly soon too, which would make it NZ's only international last minute site I think. I ran into a problem, so gave them a call and their customer service was impeccable. I suggest everyone should try all the sites to gauge what is their favourite before settling on one.

The travelbug and wotif sites each list clients the other does not, making them both worth browsing. The prices are also, quite often, different, with wotif usually having better offers than travelbug, which seems now to offer only rack rates but in a more user-friendly display.

I too can confirm the wonders of Wotif, along with ratesto.go.com, needitnow.com and lastminute.co.nz
Last Minute also has something called Secret Hotel, where for $99 or so can stay in a 4.5 star hotel and there are similar deals for 3 star, 5 star, etc. Wotif recently launched its own equivalent.
You don't know where you are going but you do get a good deal.
I'm not sure about the South Island, but in Oz, the secret hotel was often the Holiday Inn, which became a favourite of mine.
The other week, for my 40th birthday, I used Wotif's secret hotel deal and ended up paying $125 for a night in Auckland's Stamford Plaza, $25 less than the lowest published internet price.
Over the past year or so I have used these websites countless times and I only wish they covered Tonga, where I'll be spending a few days next month, thanks to Air NZ's Grab a Seat deals a few weeks back.

I have used wotif quite a bit too. Is fantastic - especially if you decide last minute to have a spontaneous weekend away ;-)

When we went to Tokyo last month wotif was a bit limited though so we booked all our accommodation through priceline.com and got fantastic discounts (USD113 per night for 5star accommodation in Akasaka (great central part of city)
