Labour are scum

Govt wants your resolution to be ‘go green’

Environment Minister Trevor Mallard is encouraging New Zealanders to make becoming more sustainable their New Year’s resolution.

Mr Mallard said people heading on holiday and those staying at home could do plenty of things to be sustainable and keep New Zealand clean.

“Behaving sustainably not only protects our environment, it also brings health benefits and savings and it’s important for the economy as consumers around the world seek out climate friendly products and services.”

He encouraged all New Zealanders to reduce, re-use and recycle.

“Today 95 per cent of Kiwis have access to recycling facilities and 80 per cent of regions have kerbside recycling. With these services, recycling has never been easier, and the New Year is a great time to start.”

Tonnes of rubbish were created around the Christmas holiday time, Mr Mallard said.

“Recycling wrapping paper and packaging helps cut down the more than three million tonnes of waste that is put into New Zealand landfills each year, and is something you can continue in the New Year.”

People could also check with their council to see if they were collecting and recycling Christmas trees into compost.

Composting food scraps was a good way to reduce waste and improve a garden, Mr Mallard said.

All empty glass bottles, cans and plastic containers should be recycled.

Travellers in campervans should have a plan for waste disposal. They should not dump rubbish in the open or stock effluent release areas, he said.

“Dumping waste in the open or even in stock effluent release areas should not be an option. Using one of nearly 600 dump stations is better for New Zealand’s environment, health and tourism industry.

These are publicly available in camping grounds or at service stations throughout the country.”

People enjoying the beach or bush this year should also take bags to collect their rubbish.

Tips for becoming more sustainable this summer

– Reduce, re-use and recycle rubbish

– Compost suitable food scraps

– Take bags for rubbish when on the beach or in the bush

– Take a cloth bag to go shopping

– Check out local council websites for details about Christmas tree collection and recycling into compost

– Switch off electrical equipment at the wall when you go travelling

– Get your car tuned and check tyre pressure before going on a car trip

– Boaties should not discharge untreated sewage in areas where people swim or gather shelfish, or in sheltered waters or marine farms.

– Campervan users should use dump stations for dumping their waste.

What’s so hypocritical about that? I’m sure Trev recycles.

In fact, he’s been recycled himself – kicked out of Parliament by the good people of Te Awamutu and recycled by the people of Hutt South.

I think today is a good day to suggest that the liarbore filth that sully our nation’s good name should be confronted by pugilism until the job is done.

Funnily enough, I’ve spent the afternoon cleaning out the fridge and larder of half-full jars, plastic bottles, etc. Normally the good and I do recycle (or rather, she does on our collective behalf).

However, I thought that I might register my own comment on Mallard’s rantings by mixing this lot of jars and bottles in with the weekly rubbish.

I recycle because I want to, not because an adulterer and thug tells me that I should.

Also Toby, can you come clean up my house please, and drop the rubbish at the local “dump station” at my local “service station” please. I can’t find either of them anymore.

Michaels – I found a `Service Station’ the other day the BP at Havelock North. It had two (yes 2) people working on the forecourt a sight unseen for many moons and perhaps years. throughout the North Island.

I will go back there even though it is slightly out of my way because mostly they are just petrol pumps and cashiers.

Aha! the BP at Havelock North is my regular. Here’s a plug for Millward Motors, where even Roger Millward himself can be seen at the cashier from time to time and where you can always get a bowser attendant even if you’re not blond and leggy (although that helps).
