Island Bay

I grew up in Island Bay, and I still go to Island Bay Medical Centre, so on Tuesday popped over to get a Hepatitis A shot.
This is the main road, The Parade, and the main shopping centre. Island Bay is a fairly long yet skinny suburb. The Parade runs from one end of it to the other for 2 – 3 kms. But almost all of Island Bay is within a few 100 metres of The Parade.
It’s got a good local school, and very good regular buses into town. If I ever settle down and do the family thing, I could well move back to Island Bay. It was a great place to grow up with lots of parks (well one less after a school was built on on one of them) and the beach.

It is a great place indeed.
The views of the South Island from the coast on a clear day are magical.

You’ve forgotten about the resurrection of the Picture Theatre. Was was a dilapidated, underused hardware store is now a popular, 3 screen, comfortable movie theatre with cafe. (WITH FREE PARKING!!!)
Check out the Empire.

yeah, it’s a special spot…it’s pretty rare that you can finish work and in 20mins you can be taking a dip in the cook strait and then being able to stretch the string and reel in some kai for the smoker

I can put in a plug for Erskine Events Centre (previously Erskine College) as a place to have a wedding or function.
The Chapel has been “deconsecrated” and is a magical venue for even a civil ceremony while the Dining Hall downstairs holds about 100 for sit down dinner with dance floor. Ideal for crappy weather and everything under one roof.

I think the best thing in that photo is the trolley bus wires overhead.
(For the Mainlanders / Aucklanders, a trolley bus is a form of public transport that operates completely independently of oil price hikes, save for the occasional bucket of axle grease. But you got rid of yours decades ago…)
Thank goodness for a city with a functional public transport network!

Yes, I’m an ex-Aucklander and old enough to remember “trolleys” with great affection from my childhood.
Also remember visiting Island Bay over the years. It has not changed much and the views are amazing. Always wonderful for a walk near the water too.
Trains are better from Auckland nowadays to where I live; about an hour, by train, south of the big smoke.

The brilliant blue sky and summeryness is appealling, but those shady trees look even better.

Who can remember Jim Herrons Riding School[and the girls in the hay loft]
and the `gambling nights`. Those were the days.
