Whenever one of my clients “upgrade” their MS operating system I shudder. I never know what it’s going to break and as I am supporting accounting software that’s usually critical. Non-proprietary data formats are much to be preferred for maintainability or service.

I’ve never looked at the detail of the OOXML standards debate, but most of the commentary around it smells of Open Source: good, Microsoft: bad. This really has appeared to be an opportunity taken by people who hate Microsoft to put the boot in. Which is not to say that there aren’t legitimate objections to and deficiencies in the current OOXML proposal, but I hope that the debate manages to push aside the anti-Microsoft brigade and focus only on the technical issues.
