Has anyone noticed the Standard Lads frothing at the mouth lately? Their urgent attempts to deflect criticism of the Labour party has resulted in censorship at Castro (Fidel or Raul) levels.

Apparently free speech is only free speech when its what they want to hear.

Have just been made aware that some elderly relatives have been entangled in the Blue Chip fiasco. The impact on them is huge and will probably not end well for them.

Brownie,

I have to agree that the censors over at the standard seem to working overtime to ensure that any opposing thoughts or views get quickly shut down, censored or just plain deleted. What I thought was surprising though was that it seems that they have even thrown away pretend attitude of wanting open discussion as seen by this opening post by one of their moderators last weeek.

Helen doesn’t seem to get what the polls are saying to her at all. She said this morning that she and the Team had “tonnes of good ideas” to release before the election. There is no connection with her to any sort of responsibility for the past 8.5 years of less than mediocre management of this country. Tonnes of good ideas will not be her saviour and one on one debate with Key in the lead up to the election will exacerbate her “problem” in the polls.

Grant the fallout from the finance and other companies collaspes are largely buried given that those who have lost are of a generation that doesnt make a fuss and just carries on regardless. Fact is my organisation and others told the NZX Secrurities Commission Commerce Commission and Minister of Commerce back in 2002 that it was a case of if not when these train wrecks happened. Reason NZ didnt and still doesnt have a robust prudential regulatory frame work nor does it have a Companies Act or NZX Rules that meet international corproate governance standards.

The legislators ans regulators are a bunch of gooses Do you what their answer is when I and others tackle them

The NZ market is different to others and doesnt require the same level of compilance.

Give me a break When i ask them whats different these is a long silence.

Tip to you. The next big governance issue will be identity fraud. NZ companies will find themselves wrapped up in defending litigation when a bunch of East Europeans or Asians use the company identity to perpertrate substantial international frauds because the laxness and lack of MFAT compliance.

And you kinow what the NZ legislators and regulators will be running around like headless chooks wondering why it all happened Pathetic,

It’s about time financial fraud was nipped in the bud.There should be mandatory prison sentences for directors and senior executives, including accountants of finance and any other companies taking deposits from the public if the company fails. Accountants know that to borrow money for a short term and to lend for a longer term is a recipe for disaster. Trading banks do it but they have the Reserve Bank as lender of last resort to guarantee their liquidity. The others are just gambling that new deposits will cover current payments. When this pass the parcel stops, the public, who have been suckered into lending, lose. Without exception every finance company failure has been near criminal that way. The greed of the directors has overtaken prudence.

one thing I wonder about – an outgoing govt will sometimes put in place that are difficult for an incoming govt to change. This current lot have been experts at that, even with some of the contitutional matters such as losing the Privy Council, EFA, etc (and without following the established practices in implementing larger changes eg. wide parliamentary support).

This govt has put in place worker-paid student loans (they are not free), WFF, kiwisaver, etc.

Are these things actually that hard to reverse? Politically some will be, such as any where some people get handed other peoples money (eg. WFF). But what about things like the Privy Council which I think was incredibly foolish.

KevOB The supreme irony is that none and I mean none of the failed finance companies would have been able to operate in OZ as they didnt meet their regulations And OZ has one of the lightest environments around.

I sometimes wonder if the Socialists are not only crooks themselves but that they support business crooks as well.

Mind you I have found the business and financial illiteracy in both politicans and civil servants to be staggering. Even discussing Business 101 gets their eyes glazing over and you just know you have lost them.

Did you read the piece in the weekend papers about WFF Now anyone with even half a brain would say Why not just reduce the tax rates Why take and them give back Why have an abatement rate at 80cents Why not have a low marginal rate so its worth looking to increase your income by doing more hours or negoiataing a pay raise for increased productivity.

OHHHHH I forgot Socialists dont do increased productivity

They just slice up an ever decreasing sized npie with bigger and bigger slices going to their mates.

Thanks to gd, KevinOB, and Adam for their thoughtfull replies. After doing a bit of research into the agreement these people signed, there are a few “advisors”, “account managers”, and “directors”, I’d like to see put into stocks in Aotea Square for the amusement of those they’ve ripped off.
Once again, a direct lack of tangible consequences has seen people indulging in activities that they’d not even consider if they knew there would be “personal” cost.

The rating system really isnt working.
It realy looks like comments from lefties are given negative “Karmas” possibly just because they are made by known lefties.

Wait until these characters get the hots for carbon trading and offset trading.
This will be a market “worth” trillions – but actually worth nothing because no one has a clue what is being bought and sold.
It is worth remembering that carbon trading was invented by Enron – which is presumably why the Government is embracing it with such fervour.

Anyhow, if any company enters this market sell your shares as quickly as you can before they get pinged by a US class action for fraudulent claims and misrepresentation.

Actually, looking down the page it looks like the system might be working – don’t see many trolls, and the few that have made abusive comments are in the negatives.

I don’t like the ability to edit one’s responses though – it’d be too easy to change what you’ve said then subsequent comments would not reflect this.

SSSL: I also thought I’d seen a few comments where I thought that the content was fine, it was the person who was being scored. I don’t think that is how it should work – for example I saw a Tane post that was sort of reasonable, and a lot of -ve on that. I’m guessing that the excitement will wear off quickly – so only the really obnoxious posts get hammered, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see. I certainly prefer it as a way to tone things down v’s the demerits or outright banning or editing, which other sites we could mention use.

Of course, if DPF had managed to get his default karma thing working, then that was exactly the result he was looking for – if you usually post drivel your comments are assumed to be drivel before you start.

The reference to H2 is rather cryptic, and in the context of the article could be interpreted a number of ways. Thoughts, anyone?

I like the new version DPF, ropata if the load time sucks, you must be with xtra.
Now for an Xtra rave.
For six weeks now I have been working my way though the xtra hell desk to try and get some NZ domains of their automatic junk list.
Not only does xtra no longer run their own email (I know it’s been like that before bubble), but they CANNOT communicate directly with yahoo to get problems fixed.

And this for domains that have never been infected to send spam, never sent spam and as far as I can tell their only crime is to have been in the cc of an email that got sent serveral thousand times from a NZ site who got their mail out all wrong.

I’m surprised you were surprised. There’s not many around these days who don’t understand the left’s obsession with controlling thought and speech, and that their “tolerance” is merely a mask to hide their true intent.

All over the blogosphere, you can read them whinging and whining and moaning because people are saying “unapproved” things, expressing “unapproved opinions” and using “unapproved” language. They know that with such a free exchange of ideas and information, their grip on power is eventually going to slip completely away and based on that, I’ll predict that the left are going to put even more energy than usual into their attempts to prevent the expression of ideas they consider “inappropriate”. You think the EFB is bad? I reckon there’s a lot worse to come, especially as it applies to the blogosphere.

Red Baiter I agree with you re your assessment of the lefts true intent but what surprised me was the in comparison to some of the other left wing blogs the standard was up until recently running a reasonably smart cyber campaign. The main part of that was their self portrayal as a moderate in the political sphere however since “Hosting-Gate” they seem to have thrown this concept away and instead gone for the rabid dog approach.

Agreed Mr Nobody – they have become “single issue nutters” as Michael Laws would so succinctly put it, their single issue being John Key and his credibility, which they try to besmirch at every opportunity. Not a fan at all phil.I even commented on that fact in a post on Keeping Stock a couple of weeks ago when his daughter’s illness first became public knowledge. The “single issue nutter” label was given to a sector of the Wanganui community who he clashed with shortly after his election as mayor, and seemed to me to be an apt description of the Standard at the moment with their obsession about John Key.

What a curious position for The Standard to take. “The Tories were fascist thugs 50 years ago, so that justifies a left wing government behaving like fascist thugs today”. My grandfather was a wharfie and hated the Holland government for their antidemocratic actions. If he were alive today he’d oppose the Clark government just as vehemently.

I don’t see Goff trying for the leaders job at the moment. My reasoning is:

• Clark has the upper echelons of the party stacked with all her bootlickers.
• How is he going to put together a decent cabinet out of the ragtag bunch of current MP’s?
• He’s been around for years and isn’t the right person to lead them anyway. They need someone who isn’t closely identified with this current administration. Life on the Opposition benches can be hard for senior ex-cabinet ministers.
• It would smack of a panic measure (remember Moore taking over from Palmer?)
• If Goff did take over he would have to backtrack on policy starting off with the EFA.
• Frankly his chances of winning wouldn’t be great anyway. His party is in need of a major rebuild and that will take more than 3 years I would think.

Look to the Greens to attack Labour a lot more from now on, that would be a very good tactic if handled properly.

I bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back patio
and filled it with seed. What a beauty of a bird feeder it
is as I filled it lovingly with seed. Within a week we had
hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food.
But then the birds started building nests in the
boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the
barbecue.
Then came the shit… It was everywhere: on the patio
tile, the chairs, the table…everywhere!

Then some of the birds turned mean.. They would dive
bomb me and try to peck me even though I had fed them out of my own pocket.
And other birds were boisterous and loud. They sat on
the feeder and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food.

After a while, I couldn’t even sit in my own back
garden anymore. So I took down the bird feeder and in three
days the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess and took
down the many nests they had built all over the patio.

Soon, the back yard was like it used to be ….. quiet, serene and no one demanding their rights to a free meal.

Now let’s see….. our government gives out free food,
subsidized housing, free medical care, and free education
and allows anyone born here to be an automatic citizen.

Then the illegals came by the tens of thousands.
Suddenly our taxes went up to pay for free services;
small apartments are housing 5 families; you have to wait 6
hours to be seen by an emergency room doctor; your child’s
2nd grade class is behind other schools because over half
the class doesn’t speak English.

Corn Flakes now come in a bilingual box; I have to
‘press one’ to hear my bank talk to me in English, and
people waving flags other than our own Flag. are squawking
and screaming in the streets, demanding more rights and free liberties.

Just my opinion, but maybe it’s time for the
government to take down the bird feeder.
If you agree continue cleaning up the shit!

Well yes, but do you expect much more? I cannot make sense of the comment at all. They’re just so narrow and doctrinal in their political perspectives over there, (and at the other two Labour Party sites). No rationale, no real ability to respond with reasoned argument, just slogans, dogma, intolerance and hate.

Michaels, clearly American. And doesn’t translate that well to NZ. Even if I agreed that illegal immigrants come to America because of the free stuff that they can get, rather than so they can work hard and get ahead (and are generally more law abiding and harder working that native born Americans), you’d still have a hard time convincing me that there was any sense in it.

Just a heads up from an insider.
The Greens enthusiastic push for more renewable energy; particularly solar hot water has been poorly managed.
An industry that was growing at 40% per annum first slightly dropped last year and now is dead. Nothing is happening, it has been killed.
Thanks largely to the most draconian laws in the world inflicted at breath taking speed. It may recover one day.. years from now. It might make great boasting rights to say we are the first in the world to enact certain requirements but maybe there is a reason no-one else is doing this?
There was need to improvements in SOME areas but the wholesale vitriol from an ill-informed media and self appointed experts further cemented by ludicrously onerous legislation and bad mouthing from certain MPs capped it all off.
Any industry that is next in the spot light like this should be VERY afraid. I could name a few that are much more worthy of destruction.
Should be interesting seeing the report on this later on, how much the government has ‘Helped’ the renewable energy sector. With friends like that….
