John Adams

March 30th, 2008 at 10:33 am by David Farrar

Just watched the first episode of the seven part miniseries on John Adams, the second President of the United States.

I have studied Washington and Jefferson a lot, but little on Adams. The miniseries is excellent, giving a good background to the American revolution and the first 50 years of the United States. Adams has generally been overlooked by modern historians, but in recent times his reputation has been rising as he is re-evaluated.

I’m not sure if any NZ station plans to show the miniseries here, as ratings will probably be modest for a US historical series.  But I hope they do, as it is an excellent production (to date).

It’s about time some of the founding fathers droped in reputation. I expect they could do with a little less arse kissing in the US history classes.

Just the sort of thing for the new freeview service ( the terrestial one which will be HD).
Plus by the end of the year the terrestial decoders will most likely be built into most TV sets sold here

Yes, tonight I believe. And I’ll ignore the idiotic “ass kissing” comment. The series is mostly based on letters between John and Abigail, with additional material drawn from the Federalist Papers and other historical documents. Great acting, great writing, great costumes and sets, and so far, no Hollywood-esque moral equivalence.

How’s this for a bit of modern general knowledge?? A great grandson of President John Adams (Henry Adams) travelled to Samoa in the late 1800s and an historic tie between my ancestors the Seumanutafa and Adams’s was established.
