And the cork total for 2007/08 is …

April 7th, 2008 at 3:04 pm by David Farrar

I blogged back in February the annual cork counting competition. 2005/06 was 456 and 2006/07 was 496.

Guesses from those who helped drink the ranged from 495 to 648, averaging 553.

Guesses on the blog were from 483 to 599.

The result was less than most predicted, but still an increase over the previous year – 512. That includes 240 stelvins. Chicken Little was closest on the blog with 510 and Arnold K in real life guessed 512 exactly.

Those stelvins do made it hard to guess.

Not sure what that last comment meant, but please David tell us your opinion of the cork vs stelvin debate…

Those of us less fortunate buy our wine by the litre… I could engage in a debate on the relative merits of silvered goon bags versus the clear plastic type, but all this high falutin’ cork debate is well above my socio-economic strata I’m afraid :-D

Rex, straitened circumstances are no excuse for drinking Chateau Cardboard, especially when there are cheap bottled wines avaiable. Shame on you…;-)

I guess my lifetime subscription to Kiwiblog is in the mail?

I await, with bated breath, its arrival.

I calculated the amount of bottle closers using a mathematical technique passed on to me by my late great uncle, it can be used for anything from counting people in stadiums, to the leaves on a tree.

It’s a little harder when alcohol is involved as the sugar content can make it go awry.

    Is it the 1st today?

519 – I used the old – how many scratches the dog had whilst facing East and not saying ‘right front wheel, right front wheel’ – cork divination method taught to me by my mothers stepbrothers uncle Joe.

Below growth expectations of many, at least there’s no wine recession in DPF’s house!
No-one gave guesses for my cork count. For those who weren’t interested, individual cork count was 13 corks, 140 stevlins for a total of 153. This was an 80 percent increase on last year (85), showing that full-time employment encourages binge drinking. Can we get funding for this sort of research..?

153 bottles of wine in a year is not binge drinking, Zippy, unless you are an ALAC wowser. Where I come from a binge lasts at least two days.

Great idea! But just to ensure all is above board, could we have the police at the official count?
