Saying GE is evil is an emotive or religious statement. Saying particular applications of GE (such as terminator genes or herbicide resistance) could have negative consequences in particular situations is a scientific statement. She needs to decide whether she wants to preach religious issues to the faithful or discuss scientific issues with everyone.

If she could name what GE was actually being used for that she considered bad, and outline the actual problem, there might be something to talk about – certain applications of any technology may have negative consequences. There is nothing wrong with having reservations about the use of terminator seeds, which could potentially force a subsistence farmer to buy seed every year rather than keeping their own seed – this is a real, practical concern. If she wants the world to listen she should approach the issue this way. In so doing she might be able to play a part in reducing any negative consequences of using the technology.

But to label all GE as evil is a religious statement – completely valid for her to believe as a follower of the environmentalist religion but also perfectly valid for anyone else to disagree with if they do not believe the same. Preaching this will strengthen the resolve of the faithful and possibly gain some new converts, but at the same time leave others who do not follow these religious beliefs to do whatever they please. It ultimately will fail, as some people will just use GE anyway.

Deep Green ideology DESERVES to join Naziism and Communism on the trash heap of history. They kill just as effectively, only at one remove or two, by banning essential insecticides, or by “unintended consequence” policies that affect the food supply, or by economic damage. Banning hydro dams, in NZ, won’t kill thousands of Kiwis, but it WILL, and ALREADY HAS, pushed power prices up, much more yet to come, which HAS harmed New Zealanders lives and will do a lot worse to come, both because of people being unable to afford power, and because of the harm done to the economy.
