Building the broad coalition

I have been an advocate for some time that National should negotiate post-election coalition deals with minor parties, even if National had enough seats to govern alone, so it is good to see the following in the NZ Herald:
National Party leader John Key says he could negotiate post-election coalition deals with parties such as United Future or the Maori Party even if National gained enough votes to govern alone.
My order of preference for deals is:
- ACT
- United Future
- Maori Party
- Greens
- Progressive
- NZ First
With Dr Cullen having basically spent all the surplus until 2016, minor parties may find their spending ambitions need to be curtailed (regardless of who forms the Government) and focus instead go on policies and posts rather than spending commitments.

do you really think you have got any options aside from act/the united harlot..?
the maori party won’t go with you..
..(they are just ‘playing you’..and quite successfully too..!..)
.the greens won’t go with you..
..(they are attempting to ‘play you’..(feigned) anger at labour being about their only trump card..)..(sigh..!..)
peters hates you lot more than labour does..(so i agree with you placing him last..)
that only leaves ‘big jim’ anderton..
so..it’d be key..with ‘spine’ provided by wodger douglas..?
..and malleable jelly provided by the pompadoured one..?
hardly an enticing prospect..
eh..?

I’m actually starting to feel pity….

“minor parties may find their spending ambitions need to be curtailed” – their spending ambitions need to be cut off and thrown from deck of the Waiheke ferry with such stunning examples as Green sponsored Hoodie day and homeopathic possum prevention. National needs to focus on cutting government expenditure and Act’s A4 pledge card would be a good place to start.
Interesting interview here with Bill English on inflation and government spending.

Phil: “the maori party won’t go with you..” and why would the Maori party go with Labour given it’s proven lack of respect for private property rights (Seabed & Foreshore and Auckland Airport) and that impact on Maori ?
June 9th, 2008 at 8:06 am
Now we come to the real reason that Key is a such a fugure of fear for the incumbents. He hasn’t offended anyone – unlike Helen. He hasn’t alienated any one – even Helen. He has even made it apparent that he would listen and talk to the more reasonable voices in the Labour Party. He has had time to discuss and not reject any particular issue – and the left are of course citing this as proof that he is ‘slippery’.
Funny, when Brash didn’t listen Clark said ‘He doesn’t understand MMP.’
Now there is someone who does understand MMP – they suddenly call him ‘slippery’.
If this is so what would they describe Helen Clark as given that she has prospered under MMP for those very reasons?

My list of choices is confined to those parties that voted against Bradfords democracy defying smacking criminalisation bill.
Where does that leave Smurfette Key David?
June 9th, 2008 at 8:34 am
I agree with Phil. There is nothing wrong with David’s ordering but only the first two are realistic coalition partners.
The next government is going to have a very unpleasant time trying to recover from nine of years of damage to the economy. Unless Sir Roger is the finance minister I doubt the necessary steps will be taken. This could actually be the perfect opportunity for John Key. He can turn things around while maintaining his policy of never saying or doing anything that might upset anyone because he’ll be able to blame Douglas for it.
June 9th, 2008 at 8:38 am
Why? You’re assuming no change in Govt spend, and no increase in NZ productivity over the next decade (while the Labour Party chicken grows another head).
I’d suggests that National gets serious about discontinuing a range of ‘Ministries’ and other social-agenda driven groups that suck on the publit tit. And not simply consolidating their functions…. discontinuing. There’s a few listed here which may be candidates.

Nigel, look at the previous elections nationals won by a large margin, the following election ses it all evaporate, even Muldoon had less votes ( but more seats which wont now happen) than Labour in his first re election bid. And surely you remember Bolgers very narrow win second time, which meant Richardson was dumped so quickly they didnt even slow the car down before pushing her out the door
June 9th, 2008 at 8:56 am
And why the HELL would he do that?
June 9th, 2008 at 9:22 am
So that, 3 years later, when National doesn’t have an out-right majority, he hasn’t annoyed those he might want to deal with to ensure he isn’t limited to a single term.
June 9th, 2008 at 9:30 am
Because it is about more than just one election.
June 9th, 2008 at 10:11 am
National won’t win enough votes to govern alone. You can put a ring around that one. Labour are embarking on the dirtiest campaign this country has ever seen, coupled with irresponsible blatant electoral bribes which will see National in the mid forties.
They will govern, but need help. Despite the wishful fantasies of Phil et al, Maori will happily sit on the cross benches and do a abstain deal……….for a price. I actually believe the dislike for Labour within The Maori Party is intense and rooted in “last cab of the rank” political fuck up that Clark stage managed.
Key though is being a pussy. ACT are the natural coalition partners and he should be honest and acknowledge it. If as his spin doctors think, there is such a public revulsion at the costed and comprehensive policies of ACT (the only minor party who has a realistic and effective platform), then we are all truly fucked and it doesn’t matter who wins the next election.
June 9th, 2008 at 10:15 am
because he’s engaging in the dark art of politics..in an election year..
and brian..yes..there is the foreshore and seabed act..
but if you think the maori party would support an asset-selling/benefit-cutting douglasite national gummint..
..you gotta be smoking some strong dope there..!
i mean..hide getting back in is far from a ‘given’..
so..key really only has the pompadoured-one..
that’s why he..the natties..are going gangbusters for 50% plus..
it’s their only real hope..

sadly boomtownprat IMHO you are right the Socialists will run the worst most dishonest corrupt immoral and unethical campaign this country has ever seen.
they know no better they will exceed their worst excesses of the past 9 years. As moral bankrupts and pygmies they will do anything and everything and when they realise they CANT win they will sabotage the economy out of spite of the good citizeNS
This is the arrogance and contempt these ferral venal cretins will show to us. Again sadly there are enough morons out there like the woman on TV news last night who didnt know who JK was who will vote for them.
Thats why we need to have IQ tests and political knowledge tests mandatory before any citizen can vote.
June 9th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Hopefully the last three parties, at least, on that list won’t exist after the election.
June 9th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Much simpler plan: give everyone the choice of a vote or a lotto ticket.
for those who don’t value their vote the lotto ticket would be welcome.
for those of us who do value our votes, the others taking the lotto ticket would be both welcome and empowering
June 9th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
The lotto ticket versus vote idea is truly inspired and would give National a clear victory at every election. Where can I send my $6 to support the first socialist voter’s ticket?
National will need more than ACT and United Whore to get 50%. Those Maoris will play hard ball and the idea of equality
in this country will be shelved by another three years of racism. Lovely.

GD & Boom
It may be premature to assume snakeoil Dunne will get in and that Winston lasts will be in parlaiment and that his votes will not only be insufficient to re elect him and that they will be split – in favour of left biased parties. Whilst Tauranga may be more marginal with Clarksons retirement I cannot see National not putting up a strong candidate with significant support from head office to fight a Winston with no presence in the city for years and an electorate committee who clearly have not agreed with his stance on many issues and without foot soldiers to deliver the message and fund raise he is disadvantaged. Plus there will be the question of – HAVE YOU PAID IT BACK YET??
June 9th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Well it certainly ain’t about principle. There’s a chasm between those parties that legitimately exist to promote and agenda such as Act, the Maori Party and the Greens (and whether it’s environmental issues, ‘rampant commie propaganda’ or something in between, the Greens are an issues party) and those which exist solely to serve as vehicles to transport the bloated egos of their “leaders” into Parliament (UF, NZF, Progressives).
Key could do democracy a favour and state these parties have no future in politics but he won’t… winning at any cost seems to be the only principle left.
