Go read about why one should not eat whales for dinner at In A Strange Land. A lovely little story, and having had dinner with Mr and Mrs Strange Land I can attest to their love of rhetoric and argument!

Ah yes, sweet as in a baby lamb sprinkled in mint sauce, kinda way –

Personally I reckon its time we all looked at the logic and not the rhetoric of the “dont eat whale” argument. If there are enough of them then they can be harvested. There are hundreds of thousands of minkes. Let the indigenous japanese and the indigenous norwegians exercise their traditional right as long as it doesnt jeopardise the species.

Im not going to sit in judgement of someone elses cultural tastes.

We slaughter lambs and calves for the table.

I harvest muttonbirds, they are fluffy and cute and we eat them as chicks because we have grown to like the taste. We have researched the impact of our traditional harvest and its sustainable. So who am I to sit in judgement of some other nations tastes or their right to eat what they chose?

Personally I think the whole whale debate is fuelled by our century old guilt that we were largely responsible for the critical population levels of some whale species – add to that a bit of asian phobia.

And now it appears if we really want to save the planet we need to eat insects – Bring on the huhus I say.

    sorry forgot to add –

that being said Strangeland writes very very well .. nice read.

I agree, bustedblonde. I think whales benefit from the “small cute furry animals must be saved” meme. If you’re okay with eating cows per se, then you should also be okay with eating whales per se, ‘though you might have some other reasons for not eating whales (like species survival, although even then, you have to add in some reasons about why saving a species is necessarily a good thing).

““small cute furry animals must be saved” meme”

Despite the fact they are huge and not at all furry?

Right-wing logic remains it’s usual contradition in terms I see.

  6. Deborah (137) Says:

That’s why I’ve called it a ‘meme’, Sonic. It’s a metaphorical use of language to indicate a pervasive idea.

First time I’ve been called a right winger on Kiwiblog!

Sorry for calling you a right-winger Deborah.
