Missing the difference
The ultimate nanny state bill is being pushed through Parliament, having survived select committee. And the Greens say:
The Green Party said the bill would mean the health minister could issue regulations to reduce the risk associated with non-communicable disease.
“Given that poor diet is the leading cause of preventable illness and disease, it is vital that we take steps to create an environment which encourages healthy eating in New Zealand.”
The party said it was strange that there were virtually unlimited powers to prevent communicable diseases but little to prevent or respond to non-communicable diseases.
The Greens disagreed with part of the bill that allowed people who were not vaccinated to be considered a public health risk.
So the Greens (and Labour) think we need the same state powers for a communicable disease (eg bubonic plague) as we do for primarily self imposed conditions such as obesity.
If this law is passed, and not changed, then I predict it will become more unpopular than the EFA and the anti-smacking law combined. Give the state a few years of telling people what food they are allowed to sell or buy on what days, and you might be able to get the parties responsible for it below 20%.

That’s like questioning why ambulances are allowed to break the speed limit! Because they respond to emergencies – time is of the essence.
Communicable diseases need to be contained and require emergency measures to do so. Non-communicable diseases are not emergencies so why on earth would you use the same regulations? That’s like putting emergency measure in place permanently – a favorate trick of dictators and one of the reasons that the “war on terror” is so difficult legally.

It’s almost enough to make me go on a crash weight gain diet.
I wonder how much you would have to gain to be arrested and charged with ‘stuffing yourself stupid you fat slob’? Will fat people have to dart between shops at the mall with a lookout making sure there are no police about to arrest them? Will bands of roving surgeons attack without warning and perform an emergency stomach stapling operation in the street?
Could the state move for custody of a child if he looks a bit chubby about the cheeks? Might schools weigh and grade pupils?
Could it all be part of a human meat farming co-op? Perhaps they just want to be able to provide Martians with the coordinates of the fattest people to aid in the abduction operation?
It might be time for someone to point at that we are the people, we say what goes, and we are running the show. They are just the government. If they want a nanny state then they can create it in the beehive and let the rest of us alone.

David is probably almost right. Many parents choose, for many reasons, not to vaccinate their children. For a 3 or 4 year old child to be labelled “a public health risk” is arrogant, demeaning and divisive. But anything do drive them down further into the 20s in the next series of “extreme polls” is fine by me. National are going to be busy in their first term repealing all this rubbish.

Vegetables
Herbal and natural remedies

Of course any or all of the damaging agents/elements of these things will be be ignored if it coincides with the green agenda. It’s hardly a new technique. Bradford selected data that supported her personal views and ignored other equally important research and then constructed lies during the amendment of S59 of the crimes act. What a shame it would be if it was made public that the new guidelines contradicted the histories and current lifestyles of certain green party members.

When you read the rants of Comrade Shriveled and attempt to read the shit produced by Comrade Phul you really have to wonder about their sanity.
Clark has done nothing but lie to the people of NZ for nine years, have we seen any media beat ups about it….NO, now the left wing media wankers are shitting themselves at the prospect of John Key being PM they are digging as fast as they can to find something……hell ANYTHING they can to bring him down.
The same goes for the rest of the left wing politicians, Comrade Bradford (who I reserve a special hatred for) said recently that the deaths in South Auckland over the last few weeks were “a bonus”, will that be the first story on the news this evening?, of course not.
In the mean time Phul, Shriveled and the rest conjure up faux outrage at the revelation that Key has hired some bloke to his media training.
As far as I am concerned Key has only two faults, the first is that he leans to far to the left for my liking and the second is that he is (and I never thought I would consider this a fault) an honourable man and a man of his word.
Sadly he will not make the changes NZ needs, he will not take a sledge hammer to the welfare system and he will not be as vindictive and nasty as Clark has been over the last nine years.

They take their own holidays at the same time in some instances. Other times the grandparents (retired) come and stay during the holidays. Others work out shared holiday arrangements with the ex and mother. Again others have close trusted friends or other family members (siblings) with children the same age as their children (cousins to the solo fathers’ children). Some are self-employed and so work from home more during the holidays or arrange their business trips to not occur during school holidays. One friend takes his son with him on business trips in the holidays and the boy loves it. Most use innovative combinations of all of the above.
The bottom line is phil they use their noggins and they come from a baseline that the State is the very LAST institution that should be supporting them. Where there is a will there is a way. If you really wanted to be in full time employment you easily could be and I’m sure you could create a reliable structure of supporting friends and family to assist. Working rather than living on welfare sends a message to children that this is what adults do – that they provide for themselves. It is interesting that welfare mothers, when encouraged into work in the US by welfare reform, various negative statistics declined such as jouvenile crime rates, youth chemical use/abuse and teen pregnancy rates fell. I believe you think you are doing the right thing but your son will cope fine if you work and you will be able to find ways to make it fit.

Many people in paid employment use child care centres if the child is younger and even though there is a cost, a good job for most people covers it. If your son is a teenager, help him get a holiday job so he’s working when you are. I never had a problem getting holiday work and neither do all the resourceful teenagers I know today. You are a walking talking case of why welfare benefits are so pervasive and destructive. The state has sapped your will to do what men have done since the beginning of time and that is WORK!!

Well I for one *like* the reassurance of a country with a public health system in place, but I don’t believe that lazy fat people wearing the consequences of their own making are very worthy recipients of the public health budget, so if these regulations would lead to either
(1) other priorities than treatment for ailments that are a direct consequence of eating sh*t for years, or
(2) making it harder for ignorant and/or stupid people to shovel sh*t into their fat faces, so that (1) is less likely to arise,
then I am actually rather in favour!!!.
While I admire the optimistic spirit of those with enough faith in human nature that they see no need for “nanny state” to spell out your obligations to your fellow citizens with rules and regulations, I fear that a great many of the general unwashed are far, far from worthy of this faith that you have in them…. a lot of people out there are VERY ignorant and VERY selfish!

In case people haven’t noticed, Labours pursuit of “Nanny State” is costing it points in the polls. At the end of the day it just increases the margin of its loss to National/ACT on election day.
Good to see that Labour has no clue as to how to turnaround its fortunes in the polls. It just keeps doing the same old tired policies and people are sick of it. The economy is tanking, people are finding it hard to pay the bills on struggle street, and the Helaban continues to preach that they know best.
Guess what? The voters know better and in four months they’re going to send that message loud and clear.

Keep on bludging there phil. Labour and the Greens are a spent force. The voters are going to deliver a good smack to both of them come October/November.
It is possible that a snap election is called earlier. I mean, there is risk that the bad economic news will just keep flooding in the closer you get to October/November. The Greens have no solutions to the current New Zealand recession, apart from rolling the country back to year zero. By the way the UK managed positive growth in GDP for the first quarter, so there is some indication of how lame Cullen’s management of the economy has been.
Time for a change.
