3G to 97% of NZ

A very welcome announcement by Vodafone that it will extend its 3G network from 63% of NZ to 97%.
3G gives people broadband speeds of up to 7.6Mb/s.
The next technology step up is HSPA (which I am trialling) which goes up to 28.8Mb/s.
Of interest is the next step after that, and that Vodafone is looking to go with LTE instead of WiMax which has been much hyped. LTE will give speeds of over 100 Mb/s. But note these are connection speeds – very different to actual speeds.

I think this is being done as quickly as possible because the new 3G iPhone is coming out on the 11th of this month and Vodafone want to make it as attractive as possible for potential buyers. I’m not completely sure of this, but I think that iPhone buyers may have to sign up to a Vodafone contract.
I got a message on my cell from Vodafone the other day saying that new data charge rates are coming in from July 28 for internet data usage – $1 a day for 10MB usage (no cost a day if you don’t use it that day), and if you use more than the 10MB it will be $1 per MB. This goes for on-account and prepay phones. I think this is also aimed at iPhone usage but it’s very good.
Vodafone users phone 489 from your phone to find out more.

What? The private sector built advanced telecommunications infrastructure without the state? Someone tell the government and the National Party – there has to be something suspicious about it, the bastards probably want to make a profit right? Typical!

’bout time. I’m tired of getting EDGE speeds out of my 3G cellular modem.
