BTW it’s kinda surprising that the Backbencher has no good ‘champagne’ to hand — since at CellarVate (their off-license) they stock several excellent quality sparkling wines, and all new Zealand ones at that. However, I have to confess to the same predilection for sparkling wine, be it from Champagne or Marlborough or even the Barossa Valley. The bubbles are somehow gentler on the stomach than still wines, which are often heavier, more acidic and less conducive to digestion.

Most pubs/bars don’t cater for me and Kate (is she really a girl?). But things are getting better. House bubblies that begin at the level of Jacob’s Creek pinot noir sparkling and Lindauer Special Reserve methode champagne are perfectly respectable and excellent quality for the price, but if you are trying to get a bottle of Krug or Kristal at the Backbencher, then good luck to ya.
