Finally some medals
August 17th, 2008 at 8:23 am by David FarrarI was in a strategic planning meeting all day yesterday so watching the Olympics on replay, but great to see the news that the Ever-Swindells won gold, as well as Valerie Vii.
It was a day for close wins with Phelps winning his seventh gold by 0.01s and the Ever-Swindells retaining their Olympic crowns also by 0.01s – my God. And I reckon Mahi Drysdale would have won gold not bronze if he wasn’t sick as a dog.
But Vii’s win was amazing – she set a personal best and crushed the opposition. Peaking in the Olympic final is the time to do it.

Great result for the Twins and Vili, however from a purely sporting point of view it is hard to go past the performance of Usain Bolt in the 100m final.

Excellent number of medals to have. Australia has 25, we have 5, which puts us a tiny fraction ahead of them (per capita). Do we have any more likely medal prospects?

It was indeed a long night DPF, but all medals were faithfully documented on Keeping Stock, as was the rugby result before blogging ceased for the night. It was a pretty good night all round with the Warriors winning as well – so will Clark name the day this week?

The cynic in me bets that the PM will be there when they return for a photo opportunity, that we will hear that SPARC is the reason, and that National has no sporting policy/ a double agenda in sport.

Ross – yes, we have good prospects in the triathlon (men and women), and in a number of sailing events. It would be reasonable to expect another 3-4 medals – perhaps one of each colour.

What about the women’s individual pursuit? Alison Shanks is racing for the bronze tonight at 9:05.

A truly gutsy effort on the part of Mahe. I think the 2 guys he lost to were incredibly lucky as I am sure he would have creamed them if he had not been so sick.
I think the twins and VV are just amazing. Very good result for the Beef & Lamb campaign. I think they can boogie all the way home now! VV is still young and hopefully will stick with it as she has the potential to become one of our true greats of NZ sport and a huge role model for every aspiring athlete.
Even the All Blacks won and broke a record – what a night.

I’m just so stoked for Vili. What an incredible athlete at just 23!!! And Mahe, still no idea how he could’ve been allowed to get food poisoning (if that was the case) but he was just inspirational. All in all, what a fantastic sporting day for NZ, olympics and the ABs whitewash!

I did worry that our Valerie might have strained something after her initial (PB) throw, as each subsequent throw crept shorter and shorter. But clearly not, and she was in a different league to all but I think one of her opponents. Quite impressive to see someone dominate an individual sport like that…
Speaking of which did anyone hear the full version of Usain Bolt’s post-race interview? I just caught something about a race day preparation consisting of:
Sleep in…
Get up about midday…
have some chicken nuggets…
Go back to bed for a few more hours…
Get up again and have some more nuggets…
Break world record and completely blow away the competition.
Now that guy’s a sports hero in my book!!
