Hope for Zimbabwe Add this story to Scoopit!.

After years of insanity, there is some hope in Zimbabwe. The Telegraph reports that a deal is close which will see Mugabe remain President, but many powers transferred to Morgan Tsvangirai as his Prime Minister.

As much as I would like to see Mugabe put on trial, a peaceful solution is desirable, and if it has to involve immunity for Mugabe and his henchmen, so be it.

While anyone is better than Mugabe, it is worth noting Tsvangirai is no angel, and Zimbabwe path  back to relative peace and prosperity could be a very long one.

The deadweight loss of policies put in place by racist parties is what screws up any country.

The expectation is that the deal will work- the big sticking point has been how to keep the various factions of ZANU-PF on board. Zimbabwean troops fighting in the Congo are also an issue, as Mugabe has better relations with Uganda than does Tsvangirai, and if Zimbabwe pulls out from the Congo as Tsvangirai said they should then the army will lose a lot of money.
Disclosure: I worked with the Ugandan army in providing support to the RPF, and deployed with the Ugandans during the Congo War.

The colonial power which is making sure that everything works is China. Expect a visit in the near future to Zimbabwe by Chinese officials to organise what happens where- and remember that they have had an observer at the talks- probably why news.xinhuanet.com is so well informed :-)

WTF have you been smoking Dave?

We had a Zimbabwe that had peace and prosperity.

We called it Rhodesia and it fed half of Africa.
