Hypocrisy Watch

August 12th, 2008 at 10:00 am by David Farrar

A viewer alerted me to this question from last year:

R Doug Woolerton: Does the Minister agree that any law, including electoral law, requires the participants to do what is morally right as well as what is legally right, and does she think that this is the reason the National Party is having so much trouble interpreting the Electoral Finance Bill?

Now maybe Doug Woolerton might like to explain for us how NZ First is doing what is morally right by operating a secret trust fund that donors pay into, so that not only is the identity of the donor hidden, but the identity of the trust itself is hidden from both the party and the public.

The soon to be departed, and looking for jobs, factions of Labour, Greens and Winston First are indeed masters of subterfuge.

It will be a wonderful feeling when they are finally despatched.

    A Labour rebound?

Not unless Winston has a get out of Jail Card. The Greens stop screeching about the biggest scam this Century. Then not until Labour finally come up with policies.

The NZ Parliament has been reduced to a debating society of less substance than most 6th Form Colleges.

    Pathetic really.

Aside from the hypocrisy a law can’t require people to do what is morally right. Laws are logical instruments spelling out what should happen in certain situations. Sometimes the letter of the law leads to outcomes which are manifestly unfair and immoral. It can only be moral if it expressly allows those actioning the law to waive it at their discretion. An example might be a policeman letting a speeding motorist off because he is rushing someone to hospital.

Considering how much Winston will get as a total package as an MP, Party Leader, and Minister.

How lavish actually has his lifestyle been, over and above what would be normally expected.

heres the kicker about his lifestyle – he always whinged about paying his bills because he reckoned the wine box had cost him.. Maybe it did and maybe that is what left him open to being ” used”.

    What a dumbarse.

As far as I can tell from what has been reported, it is Labour, Greens and NZF that seem to be having trouble interpreting the EFB.

Fuck I hate patsy shit coming from brown nose poodles aiding and abetting a corrupt bunch of lying creeps.

One could just as easily craft a patsy question about the sanctity of marriage and why the Civil Union Bill was so terribly wrong that it needed to be voted against from a (purely hypothetical, of course) party president who carried on a longstanding and (despite what they clearly thought) somewhat obvious relationship with the party’s treasurer when both were married (to other people).

That party is so riddled with hypocrisy that one could almost invent a new meme – “if they’re against it, they’ve probably done it”.

What would be the reaction from Labour if a senior figure in the National Party had a close relative that to be expedited fast from the US?

Hypothetically for Kiddy Fiddling, or for having over 25 lovers in a californian Bath House in one session?

Many of us will remember R Doug Wollerton as a good operator. Mr laconic himself. Then he went and sold his soul to Winston who repayed him in spades by failing to nominate him for a Cabinet Post when he had the opportunity to do so in 1996 preferring to keep him as NZF President. To be fair Doug showed some spunk in 2005 when he resigned the Presidency when Winston opted for baubles over his word.

But it must be grating for him to see NZF cuddle up to Labour and have Winston hijack donations meant for the Party. Of course the reality is that NZF MPs are totally dependant on Winston. They know that without him they are nothing and their only response to the command ‘jump’ is to touch their forelock and ask ‘how high sir’.

At least the voters of Tauranga seem to have figured it out. Hope the rest of the country exhibits the same intelligence.

Could be, could be. Could also be that that was around the time the first questions started to be asked about NZF finances. Both he and the Treasurer (entirely unrelated to the hypothetical one mentioned above, of course) both resigned at once. Purely coincidence though, I’m sure. And if you can make expediency look like principle, well that probably earns you extra points in NZF.

I don’t recall any cards from that direction, no. Though they could have been amongst those I disposed of without opening, due to the fact they were ticking :-D
