All Wellington beaches now topless and naked

September 30th, 2008 at 12:30 pm by David Farrar

Wellington City Council has quietly dropped the bylaw requiring beach goers over the age of eight to wear togs or clothes.

They have never enfroced the bylaw, not having any “apparel enforcement officers”, and point out the Police can take action if anyone is naked and acts offensively.

I suspect Wellington’s weather will be the main factor in stopping mass nudity on the beaches!

not just the beaches but any public places, streets, schools churches etc. As I have said , if a man offends too many people by his nakedness in crowded areas, he may end up like this man.

Although, given the court decision to dis-allow an appeal by the Auckland city council over boobs on Bikes, I think it is fairly safe to say its legal to go topless throughout the whole country. (Climate withstanding)

Why they’ve done this for everywhere I don’t know as we already have one beach (Breaker Bay) for it all to hang out.
That could have been codified and authorised (especially as its a destination beach and not a walk through one).

Mayor Kerry has now legally authorised nudies on all the beaches and that in effect means all streets and even playgrounds too logically as how can you limit to the beaches. So this is much more than Boobs on bikes.
That is the effect of the action.

She’s obviously forgotten that many parents wouldn’t want adults walking or playing around their kids in the nude (even though they may support set aside nudie beaches).
It would be pointless to call NZPolice unless they’re spanking a kid at the same time!

This is about par for the course on consultation from her and our council, I think she ripped out the page with transparency in her dictionary, two terms ago.

An MBA doesn’t make for ethical framework sadly, just ability and ability without ethics is a disaster for society, as far as I understand it, ethically elected officials would consult those who voted for them, especially on contentious or divisive issues.

It would be lovely to watch some family sue the pants off of our councillors but that won’t happen here.
And you can bet Suzy Kiro will not interfere.

My tone (voice) and rudeness not withstanding previously.

Having now contacted and read the council data.
I never saw nor heard any consultation on this bylaw removal and I do read most of the stuff that comes to the library.

The result is still that all beaches are open to nudie bathing.
There is no by law that anyone can call on anymore.
The question is now that they’ve removed the by-law, is what is offensive?
If the police stood around in Auckland at the boobs on bikes parade, can you see them doing anything about a person on a beach, kids or no kids.

Can you imagine how embarrassed people will be to have to call the cops.
what is going to be the procedure?
Ask the nudist first (politely) to cover themselves up, then call the police?
and what would a crowd around them say?

This is change of social mores by emotive force.
It is one thing to consult all the citizens and properly advertise the consequences.
Instead of thinking about all the members of the public the council has made the situation that people will be embarressed in a public place.

I never saw any consultation on this issue and I do try and keep myself up to date with what’s on.

Up until now, there has always been the possibility of a child on the beach seeing another very small child naked, because plenty of very small children seem to be taken for nude swims at our beaches.

Question: If the welfare of the children is what we’re worried about, then is it reasonable to suppose that a child would be more traumatised by the sight of a naked adult than the sight of a naked child? And why?

And even putting Wellington’s brutal wind chill factor aside, how many among us are really going to be up for a bit of nude bathing?
