- Parliament dissolves on Friday 3 October (just three days before it happens automatically)
- Writ Day is on Wednesday 8 October – this is what triggers the actual election
- Nominations Day is Tuesday 14 October – this is the day all nominations and party lists must be in by.
- The election is on Saturday 8 November 2008
- The official results and writs must be declared and returned by Saturday 22 Thursday 27 November 2008
- The 49th Parliament must convene no later than Saturday 3 Thursday 8 January 2009 (in reality it will almost certainly meet before Christmas. )
