750 at a public meeting

October 22nd, 2008 at 11:00 am by David Farrar

I just noted at the bottom of this Dom Post article that John Key had 750 people attend a public meeting in Pukekohe last night. That’s a huge number of people.

Pukekohe is not a wealthy area – the median family income is $60,800, marginally above the NZ average of $59,000. And on the Degree of Deprivation scale from Wellington School of Medicine, they are around a 7 – with 1 being least deprived and 10 most deprived.

So getting 750 people anywhere is rare – but in Pukekohe is quite extraordinary.

    Pukekohe is not 100% National.

Perhaps it is indicative of the interest from other voters.

That’s a lot more than the 35 or so that were at his Dunedin outing last week.

Still a little way to go to the 1500 at Otago Uni last week for Labour.

Paul, why don’t you hold a meeting in Linwood, blog the place and time here and see how many you pull?

Oh wait, you’d probably get a bloody good turnout as there are quiet few here actually keen to meet you!

My home made Taser is almost complete…

Being from pukekohe, I can tell you that it *IS* a wealthy area, there are poor parts, but by and large its full of money. There are far more new Holdens and european cars in Pukekohe than you will seen in many parts of Auckland.

Heck, we sold our place there about 12 years ago for $300,000, and its now on the market for 2.5 Million. Try and tell me thats not a well off community!

Paul – youre comparing a tuesday night public meeting in pukekohe to otago university?

if you use that analogy – labour got flogged! fuck me! only 1500 students turned up?

    Sigh!!!!

So 750 people turned up to hear the policies of Labour lite.

How bad does it have to get before the people of NZ wake up to the fact that only an idiot continues doing the same thing expecting a different result.

While Key is a nice man and an honest man he is not offering any real change other than a new face, we can only hope that the Nat’s leak votes to ACT in enough numbers that enables Rodney and Sir Roger to call the shots.

How many people happened to be at Otago University that day? 15,000? So only ten percent of the students at the most left-wing university sat in the Quad while the PM spoke?

A bit different from 750 people going out of their way on an evening to go to a public hall to listen to John Key.

I’ve just been out doorknocking with Kenneth Wang. The mood for change out there is just massive. In fact, I’m amazed that Labour could possibly be at 35%. I am picking their vote to collapse, as National’s did in 2002.

I would love to throw some voting stats at you from the last election dime, but “As a result of electorate boundary changes in 2007, the Botany electorate has no obvious existing election results.”

All i can say is it’s about 40% euro, 8.5% maori, 18% PI, 26% asian, with $71k median family income, and 47% of schools are decile 10, while 31% are decile one. Actually, stuffed if i know how that’s going to go!

    National get Tauranga Boys’ tick

    22/10/2008 13:20:02

Tauranga Boys’ College, known for correctly picking election results, is tipping a big win for the National Party.

The results of a student vote just out, tip a landslide win for National. The party vote was 71 percent for National with Labour a distant second on 16 percent.

The vote on the Tauranga electorate was much closer, with 48 percent picking National’s Simon Bridges. New Zealand First leader Winston Peters is trailing just six percent behind on 42 percent.

The students of Tauranga Boys’ College have an uncanny record – they have predicted the result of all but two elections over the past three decades.

Get it right you tosser – the function in Dunedin was by invitation only. Demand was so high that people were actually turned away – by the way it was 75 people. Numbers were restricted so that people could actually get to talk to John, as opposed to 1,500 who listened to Helen screech….

1500 for Otago Uni to see the PM isn’t a grand feat by any stretch of the imagination – remembering that OUSA would have promoted this pretty hard and the rumours about the Universal Allowances would have been going round. Wonder why she would go there for that announcement unless she knew 100% that she would get a better than average turnout?

When Winston came to Otago in 1999 (I think) he pulled in almost double that.

Also, OUSA is very loose with numbers – they count people attending their student association meetings as anybody within the radius of their union building. Add that to Labours well known truth stretching and you’ll have a far more modest number.
