I look forward to your explanation of why the explosion of private sector debt and the worst trade deficits will stand us in good stead, when the foreign beneficiaries of Labours policies decide they don’t want to lend us the money anymore.

Sadly, the trap of regulating to restrict what you dislike is subtly attractive even for those whose intellectual credentials are otherwise impeccable, such as Dime. I too sometimes imagine times when what I dislike personally is against the law, and if my imaginations were to come true I might find it hard to resist the chance to applaud. But it is always best to resist and think of the higher good – and that is absolutely minimal government intervention.

The Listener Editor makes a response below the letter; “The spreadsheet supplied by Mr Conway reveals………” and concludes “The Listener, therefore, stands by its editorial……..”……..

I don’t know any Mandarin, and I understand that the pitch and inflection with which they say each vowel also affects the meaning of the word……….
In theory it affects the meaning, but a lot of native Mandarin speakers are a bit lazy. The inflections end up being very flat and indistinct. Meaning is often conveyed by the context you are in. It’s the same in NZ. If you went to a pub and ordered a bear, you’d get a beer (not an ursine carnivore).
Lazy speakers are common to most cultures however- I’m sure I’ve met many people in the Southern USA, Australia and NZ that only use 3 of the 5 vowels in most of their speech. [:)]

For heaven’s sake. She wasn’t injured. You’re quite right though, in saying that if The Leader had been injured there would have been howls of glee. If that had been the case, your point would have some basis other than finding no humour in slapstick. But in reality, the degree of injury was commensurate with the size of The Leader’s knowledge wave. It didn’t happen.

Sadly, the trap of regulating to restrict what you dislike is subtly attractive even for those whose intellectual credentials are otherwise impeccable, such as Dime. I too sometimes imagine times when what I dislike personally is against the law, and if my imaginations were to come true I might find it hard to resist the chance to applaud. But it is always best to resist and think of the higher good – and that is absolutely minimal government intervention.
So, no, I don’t think Dime is some kind of Standard spy, I think he is a good conservative who just briefly lost his way. But that’s OK, hopefully he will see how he is wrong and be welcomed back into the fold. We are none of us perfect, although we are made in god’s image, we are with sin, and as good christians we must learn to live with that.

In theory it affects the meaning, but a lot of native Mandarin speakers are a bit lazy. The inflections end up being very flat and indistinct. Meaning is often conveyed by the context you are in. It’s the same in NZ. If you went to a pub and ordered a bear, you’d get a beer (not an ursine carnivore).
Lazy speakers are common to most cultures however- I’m sure I’ve met many people in the Southern USA, Australia and NZ that only use 3 of the 5 vowels in most of their speech. [:)]

I’m part of that Facebook kitten-killing group and would just like to say we are completely serious. Given that the Greens are likely to get at least 120,000 votes, that’s a lot of kitty euthanasia we will have to perform after the election. Our 50 members have a quota of 3000 kittens each (we want to make sure) and the smart ones among us have been stockpiling them for some time now. I personally have over 1500 in my garage, and with a simple application of hose to exhaust pipe + selleys on the door frames will meet half my responsibility in a couple of hours max.
After our assured success we plan to expand into other projects – we’ll shoot some fish in a barrel, kill the goose that lays the golden egg, and squash some ants, like ants. And we’ll send the whales and dolphins to go swim with the fishes, if you know what I mean.

Very symbolic of Helen’s election campaign. However, perhaps unsuprisingly, the media in this country has been very reluctant to draw any such analogies, no matter how applicable.

I am a local body councillor, our authority has a Mayor,whom I admire and respect, supporting the Labour list but voting for a high profile National person in the electorate while another friend is life long Labour. We are mature enough to accept our differences and get on.
Hate is horrible, it corrodes the holder as much as the person under attack.
When the election is over there has to be some coming together. I would be the first to admit that Labor/HC have created much of that nastiness with people like Clark,Cullen,Mallard and Hodgson.
We have more class fellow people of the centre-right.

Relax, Neil, do not take too seriously what you see posted here. I’m no Labour voter, but I don’t hate them. I would have rushed to help Helen, had she fallen in front of me. Remember she is getting on, 58 years old now AFAIK, the odd tumble is to be expected.

Saturday, Nov. 8th can’t come to soon!! I feel sorry for her. Never thought I would say that because she could care less if a violent parolee or a criminal on bail broke into our house and tried to do some harm to my family yet she has (hopefully had) the power to stop it.

Why is well know bludger, Russell Brown, having a moan about this thread? Shouldn’t he be concentrating on finding another job, after all he’ll be getting the sack from his taxpayer funded job at Media 7 thanks to the election results on 8 November.
