Debate:

NZ is actually the best positioned OECD economy to be able to ride the economic storm, with good and steadfast management. And possibly the worst with a socialist administration.

NZ is likely to be a late casualty due to its distance from the main markets and the lag on commodity demand (milk fat, meat, wood etc) downside hitting GDP.

As you say though, on the upside NZ produces primary goods that will continue to be in demand albeit at lower prices.

The worst case scenario for NZ would be an AU banking collapse – thanks to the light handed regulatory framework endorsed by Mikhael and Hulun.

Interesting to watch Wheldon get anxious about the real economy. I truely hope that NZ doesnt have a big main board player go bust.

NZ and the US are in interesting positions going into this recession, and we are both one month out from choosing the people who we think are best qualifies to get the country through this tough period.

Ironically, the US has a right wing administration and NZ a left wing one. Both have been in power for some time and each has had the benefit of inheriting an economy on the up and up.

Do we have a chance of a better ride with a change of driver? Key has a stronger background in economics, so we should see Cullen try to discredit that. But as an export led economy, we are in the hands of the global economy somewhat.

We are dependent on OZ. Makes me wonder whether the time is right to integrate into a full union.

As a separate state we are well placed to have a win win with our ‘Pacific Yank’ cousins.

They do refer to as a South Pacific Poms! Funny really.

So Helen had to use ‘Air Farce Tahi’ for Government business eh ? 1st time I have ever heard that either meeting with 150 people from a regional Grey Power group classified itself as ‘Government Business’. More like electioneering in my books. One rule for all, another for Labour (& NZF) MP’s, and then something else for the smarmy leader.

Also interesting to note that last year Air Farce Tahi used up 98 of the 100 hours allocated to it, and this year so far it’s only used 30. Anyone care to bet that it’s going to use a lot more in next 4 weeks ? All on Government business of course.

NZ is one of the worst positioned OECD economies to be able to ride the economic storm, with poor and incompetent management. New Zealand will be ripped asunder by the financial crisis.

Just the market in action.

Questions:

How fast can a BMW go up the Kapiti Coast when the boss needs to get to broomstick one on a matter of urgent Gummint business?

How “urgent” can a Greypower meeting be?

How is a Greypower meeting considered Important when the country’s economy is in ruins, the treasurer has pissed away the profits and the shareholders are about to lose their shirts?

What are the criteria for whistling up one of the broomstick fleet?

Are the pilots on permanent standby to scramble?

Endless questions, no answers!

Two questions:

1) Why are our major routes called State highways?

2) What is so bad about our links with Oz? They are the closest we have apart from ‘Home’

Why would the ozzies want us? Lets face it nz is not exactly in a strong bargaining position and, given the great australian penchant for needing to be winners, we would be inviting a royal ass-screwing to try and negotiate any sort of union now.

Original States shall mean such States as are parts of the
Commonwealth at its establishment

So, you don’t have to negotiate, just ask to be let in.

ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM:

NZ has its own home-grown crisis even worse than the US one. We have had a much larger housing market “bubble” than they have. We have had just as much of a slowdown in the housing market as they have. Our market is adjusting down by at least as much as theirs, and we are confronting similar equity losses. We have had more financial institutions fall over. Our economy has actually gone into recession – theirs has not. Our unemployment increase is probably worse than theirs if our statistics were not creatively managed.

We are actually fortunate that our biggest financial institutions ARE overseas-owned, and owned by companies much bigger than NZ itself. If our financial sector was a domestically “sealed unit”, it would have collapsed completely.

Our media is too busy scoffing at the collapse of capitalism on Wall Street, to notice. This has the spin-off benefit that we have not got a panic “run” situation.

But people who talk about NZ being in a sound position and being dragged down by the spin-off from the rest of the world, particularly Australia, are deluding themselves and most of the rest of us. The truth is the exact reverse of that.
