Great way to unwind

The early afternoon Friday saw me covering the unofficial launch of the new i7 Intel chip. I’m going to post on that more on Monday, and chatted to the Intel Product Manager about it. Gamers and content producers are going to love it.
The launch was at the Melbourne e-gaming convention, and I found one very good shoot me up detective game – great graphics, and an awesome choice of weapons. I got so engrossed in the game, I spent five hours on it!! It has been literally years since I spent that long on a computer game.
I am returning today to try and find my saved game and coninue!

The world is still waiting for the arrival of the much expected superfast Photonic Chip (about 1 centimeter in size) in which Prof. Benjamin Eggleton and his group are currently developing. I saw Eggleton’s presentation on this new chip at the symposium for the opening of the University of Auckland’s Photonic’s Center in 2006 at the Physics Department. Eggleton stated that Intel is part of a number of multinational corporations that fund this research, and his group at CUDOS collaborates with other groups from around the world.
The advantage of photonic chip over semi-conductor based chip is that photonic technology doesn’t suffer the high power consumption (& slowness of transmission) of semi-conductor. Photonic devices use light to carry the signal where the signal runs unhindered (ie, less friction – lead to faster transmission) thru the photonic waveguide material while semiconductor chip uses electrons (electrical current) to carry/process the signal which suffers resistance, therefore hinders the transmission speed.
Prof. Eggleton said, that this new generation of chip is still a few years away, but researches are moving faster than they thought.

Isn’t the i7 series targetted more at workstations and professionals than gamers?
