The final CTU ad
November 5th, 2008 at 10:45 am by David FarrarThe best ads this election have been the ones not from the parties. The CTU have alerted me to their final anti-National ad. Not as funny as their first couple but still a lot better than most out there. They try a bit too hard on this one, but the Borat part was good.

I thought that was quite good.

yeah, I thought the voices were well done – esp borat. I’d be interested to know who the production company was that made it..

Well hardly an election advertisement, I’d quite like to see that as a tv show with all parties covered, it’s quite funny as parody. If they’re hoping to get a real message across however, I think they’re wide of the mark. I guess when you’re a multi-millionaire union with lots of money to throw around, wasting it on ads that probably won’t work doesn’t really matter, unless you’re a union member wondering why they’re funding parody videos on youtube, then you might get upset.

A good effort. I think it managed to play on all the standard stereotypical fears. Although, I’m not sure I saw anyone bleeding to death in accident and emergency? Have I spoiled the sequel?

David, speaking of election ads: you’re an expert on the EFA. On page C6 of the NZ Herald today there is a full page ad placed by the Greens ad agency, Special. It features a colour shot of a Green Party billboard/newspaper ad (the shot of the little girl on the wharf with the words “Vote for Me Party Vote Green”).
It is then followed by a series of testimonial comments stating how great the Greens advertising has been and finishes with a spiel touting for business for Special.
I am sure this must contravene the EFA and it carries no declaration details, names addresses etc.
As a full page, full colour ad in the NZ Herald is at least $25,000 should this amount be debited to the Greens electoral spending?
I would be interested in your thoughts.

[DPF: I have not seen the ad myself but based on your description of it, I think it almost certainly is an election advertisement that should be authorised and included as an expense]

Its ironic the CTU mentions Kazakhstan: “New Zealand is poised to slip to 47th on the world ladder of economic prosperity, leaving us wallowing behind Kazakhstan” (see Lane Nichols – The Dominion Post, Tuesday, 04 November 2008).
This is thanks to the Labour Party plan to lift us into the top half of the OECD? Where’s the childish cartoon parody of that particular disaster? This is the CTU’s best effort to debate policy – pfff.

Sean
I look forward to a speedy reversal and a rapid climb up the OECD ladder starting in the next 100 days.

“….The best ads this election have been the ones not from the parties…..”
Soooo…….who has benefitted the most from “third party” advertising……..the paranoid Heleban who have passed draconian anti-free speech legislation? Surprise, surprise.
