    Have a nice day.

    Missing you already!

  2. Murray (8,734) Says:

Interestingly the actually name of the area is “Hawke Bay”, but the convention of Hawkes Bay is so common its even made its way into offical documentation.

  3. expat (3,684) Says:

Eagle Rock Country – God Zone.

  4. Camryn (344) Says:

Murray’s right. Check Google Maps, for example.

  5. dragon09(1) Says:

    Murray & Camryn

I thought one was the actual BAY- with the water and all. And then the other was the region…. Can’t remember which way round it is. Thought with ‘s’ was region and without was BAY.

  6. bearhunter (859) Says:

I thought Hawke Bay was the actual bay part and Hawke’s Bay was the region.

  7. expat (3,684) Says:

    bearhunter – no, common misconception.

It’s all Hawke Bay, but not many people call it that.

  8. trout (624) Says:

    On a buying trip?

  9. Captain Crab (351) Says:

That earthquake did the place a lot of good.

  10. Murray (8,734) Says:

A really high tide could fix Auckland too.

  11. expat (3,684) Says:

Wellington, you can’t beat it on its one good day a year.

Will be a lot easier once the gummint spigot is turned off.

  12. Murray (8,734) Says:

And yet even the most partisan review of the met office records indicate that Wellington has more sunny days, less rain, less wind and less violent storms than Auckland. Hmm…

The only thing Auckland scores higher on is temperature. Which is such a bonus being built on a fetid swamp as it is.

So milder better weather in Wellington is the reality.

I speak as someone who used to be an Aucklander. But I’m better now.

  13. big bruv (9,840) Says:

I am a Wellingtonian and bloody proud of it, its better than Auckland, Dunedin, Hamilton (does Hamilton serve any purpose at all?) and certainly better than Canterbury where marrying your sister seems to be the norm.

There are a million reasons to live in Wellington however the weather is not one of them.

It’s a great place, its vibrant, interesting, alive and it has a real heart……..but the weather is crap.

“… (does Hamilton serve any purpose at all?) and certainly better than Canterbury where marrying your sister seems to be the norm.”

Well yes actually. If it wasn’t for Hamilton, its inhabitants could be living in your neighbourhood. As for Cantabrians marrying their sisters, well I certainly don’t think you got this right. Although their physical appearance points to an unnatural constraint on the local gene pool, I don’t believe they actually MARRY their sisters.

  15. Tamaki Resident (66) Says:

Hawke Bay is the sea area, Hawkes Bay is the land.

“Murray’s right. Check Google Maps, for example.” It must be true, I read it on the Internet!

  16. Johnboy (6,624) Says:

Don’t trip over in the forest and get a splinter in your butt Cunliffe thinks the local hospital is a bit dodgy.

“It’s all Hawke Bay, but not many people call it that”

The Geographic Board (who are the people who give official names to places seem to have a different view:

“As indicated in Section 16.9, the possessive form should be avoided whenever it can be
done without destroying the euphony of the name or changing its descriptive
application. Where the possessive form is retained, the possessive form and apostrophe
    should be dropped.
This is evidenced by the Hawke’s Bay and Hawke Bay names, both of which appear on
the maps; Hawke’s Bay for the County/Province/Land District with the possessive form
and apostrophe, and as Hawke Bay for the Bay itself, without the apostrophe and
possessive ‘s’. The name was given after Admiral Hawke.”

  18. AG (1,232) Says:

“having a look at Mangarara Station and Forest.”

Will DPF miss the woods for the trees (as usual)?

Thank you! Thank you! On that note, I’m outta here.

  19. pdm (838) Says:

Bharmer – thanks for recording that.

As a resident of Hawkes Bay (the land) most of my life it has always been my understanding as you have it above:

Hawke Bay – the sea area roughly from Cape Kidnappers to Tangoio Bluff.
Hawkes Bay – the land from just north of Norsewood to roughly Raupanga and the ranges.

Never Never Never is it – The Hawkes Bay – and everyone whocalls it that should was their mouths out and have the pen that they write it with broken.

  20. Tauhei Notts (1,016) Says:

    DPF,
Is The Bay as dry as everybody says.
It seems that eastern North Island is becoming very dry.

[DPF: Yes last rain was 19 August and only 20 mm]

  21. Ratbiter (1,265) Says:

You people are asking for a lot, given that we live in a country where semi-literate people routinely put up advertising statements of the form:

    “Granny Smith Apple’s $2.99/kG!”
    “New release DVDs $14.99, Video’s $10.99″

And a good HALF of the readers see nothing wrong, at least nothing worth mentioning. (The second example is the one that really pisses me off. FFS you don’t even need to KNOW what the apostrophe is for, to register that one out of either DVDs or Video’s must be wrong!!)

At least with Hawke’s Bay / Hawke Bay, both options in widespread use are grammatically correct.

  22. bharmer (615) Says:

It’s a good job no one mentioned Bank’s Peninsula then ;-)

  23. bearhunter (859) Says:

“At least with Hawke’s Bay / Hawke Bay, both options in widespread use are grammatically correct.”

Unless of course you’re reading North and South or Metro in which case it has been decreed (after holding a meeting about it, no less!) that there is no apostrophe in Hawke’s Bay. It’s not just ungrammatical and plain wrong, it’s editorial bloody policy.

  24. Murray (8,734) Says:

Except that the place is not actually named Hawke’s Bay, Hawkes’ Bay or Hawkes Bay.

  25. expat (3,684) Says:

Big Bruv :: It’s a great place, its vibrant, interesting, alive and it has a real heart (re:WGN)

    If you like government towns.

People dis Canberra but there are some very interesting legal activities in Canberra. Anyone know what they are?!

“Except that the place is not actually named Hawke’s Bay … ”

Yes it is, according to the Geographic Board who are the only people with the legal authority to say so.
