Provincial Anniversay Days

January 31st, 2009 at 3:00 pm by David Farrar

Bernard Hickey blogs that the provincial anniversary days should all be on the same day:

We should be bringing together all of these itsy, bitsy little provincial holidays into one national day so we can all have a day off. It would no doubt significantly improve productivity on all these itsy, bitsy days and ensure we all still get a day off.

We could call it National Provincial Day Off. After all, does anyone really care or know why today is Auckland Anniversary Day and last Monday was Wellington Anniversary Day?

I agree. The whole idea of public holidays is that most of the country is n holiday, so you can relax. Otherwise you’d abolish public holidays and just give everyone two week’s extra annual leave.

So having different holidays in each province is silly. Especially considering we no longer even have provinces!

The holiday should just be set for all of the country as the last Monday in January. It’s a good time for a break.

Won’t work. Provinces showcase their AMP shows and the like on the provincial holiday, and they are one of the last successful stands against assimilation by the Borg. (I have to put it in sci-fi fantasy form so that Wellintonistas can understand).

Agree JC here in Canterbury there would be lynchings if Show Day was taken away as a Holiday.
They would not worry that John Key was a good Christchurch boy, if he let it pass that Show Day was canned, his would be the first neck in the noose.
Hey you have the Aand P show the Trots the Rodeo and a whole weekend to recover What could be better

Oh and for the non rural types it is Agricultural and Pastoral Show not in no way connected to that Aussie Insurance Company .

Yes, naturally it should be on Auckland anniversary day.
The year revolves around having the yacht ready for racing on that day.

Try getting the good people of gingaslovakia to change show day.. Not a chance, there would be protests daily in the village of the damned and they may even start demanding secession.. Oh, hang on a minute….

You have this one wrong DPF
Provincial New Zealand will have your guts for garters.

[DPF: Did not consider the Shows. Maybe then just Auckland and Wellington could move to the same weekend!]

Instead of worrying about the provincial holidays perhaps we could see a change to Waitangi Day and Anzac Day (NZ’s two most important national holidays in my opinion) so that if they fall on a weekend the next working day becomes a holiday (like Chrstimas and New Years) so we don’t end up with a situation like we will next year where we effectively loose both these public holidays.

So Bernard wants to run our holidays through the socialist mill. Down with provincial history! All must worship the new state holidays! The past is dead, long live the state!

oh dear what a yawn. No economic news you could have had an an aneurysm about instead, old chap?

Having given this all of three seconds thought the only conclusion any sane person can come to is that there is no justification for any paid public holidays.

If “workers” want a day off they should take it (unpaid) after giving notice to their employer of their desire to do so.

If their employer isn’t happy about it the employee should look for another job.

And Bill, the Village of the Damned Good should secede. It would be great for the Good Guys.

Not so good for NI no-hopers maybe and terrible for the NI trash that keeps polluting the area.

It will never happen, given the “we are it” city in the north and “we know best” city in the south then I wouldn’t expect an agreement anytime soon as they couldn’t stand conceding their holiday date to one or the other.

Sorry DPF as a Hawkes Bay born and bred I want the HB anniversary day to remain where it is – the Friday before Labour weekend. It may make sense though to have the Auckland and Wellington anniversaries on the same Mondays so that all Head offices based in those cities are closed on the same day.

Thats that then. Auckland Aniversary day is hereby moved to coincide with Hawkes Bay Anniversary day (circa 1 Nov). A new category of animal showing will be introduced, “Best Ponsonby Handbag Dog (ette)”..

    Awesome expat.

If it ain’t broke, why try and fix it.

These sort of questions ought really be made to wait until the next term of office.

We have more pressing issues at the moment surely?

Like getting Paula Bennet into prison for a long stretch, for writing a letter, and trying to help her daughter, and the girls errant beau.

I am quite happy with Show Day falling on, well, Show Day (that’s the Canterbury provincial holiday for plebs). If Wellington wants to join us well and good – although given the proportion of public servants in Wellington it is probably more notable when people are *at* work in that City…

Leave the holidays alone! Don’t tinker with things that are not broken. Those of you that want to work everyday turn off your pc’s and get a life!
