Herald’s top ten political events of the decade

The Herald is celebrating ten years of nzherald.co.nz and one of the features is a look at the top ten political events of the last decade.

But they have made a boo boo with No 1 being “Jenny Shipley becomes deputy PM” in 1998, when what they mean is “Jenny Shipley sacks deputy PM”.

They also describe the 1999 – 2002 Labour/ Government as our second coalition government. In it was our fourth. The first was the Liberal/Reform coalition from 1931 – 35. The second was National-United-ROC between 1995 and 1996. Third was National/ from 1996 – 98.

Anyway the ten are:

  1. Shipley sacks Peters – 1998
  2. Clark becomes PM – 1999
  3. Alliance implodes – 2002
  4. Record defeat for National – 2002
  5. Foreshore and Seabed Hikoi – 2004
  6. Rod Donald dies – 2005
  7. Benson-Pope and Field stand down – 2006
  8. Don Brash quits – 2006
  9. Peters censured – 2008
  10. Key becomes PM – 2008

No 1 and No 10 were good 🙂

Can't think of anything too major they missed. Maybe the Orewa speech?
