Veitch back on TV
The HoS report that Tony Veitch will be back on TV shortly – on Murray Deaker’s show on Sky.
If the trial was in the near future, I would disapprove. In an ideal world it would be better for the assault allegations to have been resolved, before decisions are made on appropriateness of broadcasting roles.
But with the trial unlikely until the end of 2010, that is far too long a period to expect someone to be out of work. So I can understand the decision. It is of course not without risks, especially if Veitch is convicted. But that is for a jury to decide.

Let him be. This story get murkier and murkier. I cannot endure a man hunt and Veitch has been hounded through the media, how he will get a fair trial I do not know. Many other celebrities have been able to protect their privacy before trial but not Veitch, he was not given a chance, the leaks came before Veitch was given a chance to get this protection and I have to ask why. I do believe the police are not without fault here and I hope his lawyer considers whether the trial should be stayed due to this unfairness.

All I can say is it’s a shame he isn’t Maori, Pacific Islander or Muslim refugee, with a tendency for hi-jacking planes, laying in wait for pizza boys before killing them, or beating women and the elderly to death with hammers.
What with the cafuffle in the media, our bug-eyed justice system, and endless unofficial penalties, he would have got off lighter if he had.

He faces seven charges of assault !!! FFS most would be remanded in police custody. Our justice system is a disgusting cess pit of double standards!!!! Putting him back in front of the camera is insulting to anybody done over by the corrupt judiciary!!!!

The assaulter and assaultee worked out the punishment between them and that is where it should stay. I wish more victims could do that.

Either he should have had an express date in Court, or they should drop the charges.
To wait until 2010 is quite unjust.
I know nothing of the actual occasions where there was bodily harm.
There was a ‘deal’ and then it got forgotten. OK, fine.
I am just worried that this was a case of six of one, and that the lady involved has been a tad more complicit in the drug issues that seem to be at the centre of this dispicable episode.
I hasten to add, that if Veitch had been in Court and found guilty after a consideration of all the facts then he should have the full measure of the law.
There is a strange feeling about that the woman involved isn’t that stable either.

Innocent until proven guilty has been a mainstay of our law since the founding of NZ. Without any proof of guilt, without a trial, this man was denied employment, and YOU seem to think that’s OK. Well, I guess I’m just one of those handwringing lefties redbaiter railes on about, but I still think that the presumption of innocence is worth preserving and that no Man should be denied his right to earn an income simply because of accusations.
Re-read your own railing against the new copyright laws as appliccable to ISP s and then say “double standards”.
[DPF: Innocent until proven guilty applies to the Government imposing sentences. You fall into the trap of thinking it applies to employers. If a TV presenter was arrested and charged with rape or murder, do you think they would continue presenting the 6 pm news?]

I am pleased he has new employment on television doing something he enjoys.
As the article says, it will assist with his recovery from a rather difficult time and I wish him well; top marks to Murray Deaker for offering him the position.

And to all of you who think that Vietch is being treated unfairly I ask you this, would you be happy to see Chris Kahui front a TV show?, after all, according to our law Kahui is innocent of the crimes he was charged with.
Fuck Vietch, he is a woman basher and as far as I am concerned they are just one stop up on the slime ladder from child abusers.

BB 9.43am. I agree. And waiting until 2010 for a trial is unacceptable. Expat I wasnt aware that lawyers determined the date of a trial I thought that was up to the judge.
I am appalled at what he his charged with. And if he is guilty I hope he goes away for a long time, however justice delayed is justice denied.

Come on guys, we know he will not be locked up, people involved with sport in NZ (here read Rugby or League) NEVER get locked up unless there is absolutely no other option, they can bash their spouses, drag their pregnant partner down the street by her hair, assault innocent people in pubs just because “he looked at my Mrs” or bash and rob a taxi driver and the legal system will excuse them.
Before you jump all over me for being anti rugby I have to say that I love the game (I will admit to detesting League with a passion as it is a game for morons) but I have to say that while I do love Rugby I do not have a lot of time for the people who play or run the game.

Chris Kahui?!?! …are you serious? …even a cursory glance at the evidence against him begs the question “who the f**k was that supposed to fool?!?!”
Kahui’s Jury took 10 minutes to find him not guilty (after listening to the Crown present the biggest load of old cobblers they had ever heard)…because they thought it polite to wait 9 minutes and 52 seconds after reaching their verdict before returning to the Courtroom.
Yes, I would be delighted to see a television programme with Mr Kahui in it.

I think some people here are getting a little confused.
1. There is no way Veitch’s lawyers would be delaying the trial. They would want it tomorrow if they could get it. The delay is due to a completely dysfunctional justice system.
2. Veitch is innocent until proven guilty. That does not bar anyone from forming their own conclusions as to his guilt. All it means is that he cannot be punished by any state entity until he has been found guilty by a jury of his ‘peers’. This does not preclude you from preaching his guilt wherever you want (in the absence of a court order to the contrary, and with libel proceedings in mind), or calling him nasty names. Do whatever you like (within the bounds of the law).
3. Having decided point (2) above, your choice regarding Veitch being re-employed on TV will be a simple one: Either watch the shows he is involved with, or don’t. Like any good capitalist, vote with your feet.
4. The Kahui case and the Veitch case are not at all comparable, except in the most abstract and legalistic way. The brutal murder of an innocent baby by a soulless monster and his evil clan is a far cry from some domestic violence which was all settled up by voluntary compensation. Even if Kahui has been found not guilty, we all know the truth and are entitled to treat him with the contempt he deserves. Same deal with Veitch.

I am very uncomfortable with the notion that all men are bashers, and all women are sweetness and light.
Drugs seem central to the awful domestic violence. perhaps alcohol as well.
This tragic case is simply not clear cut.
There should have been a much faster appearence in Court.
Defence lawyers are unlikely to be able to prevaricate. It is CPS that drives the agenda timing.

Well, I will be voting with my remote and giving Veitch a wide berth.
What sort of a message does this send to community at large that a man charged with such a heinous crime is given public exposure and by extension sanction? Why would anyone canvas the opinion of a self-confessed, yet excuse-ridden woman beater? Why would anyone value the judgment of anyone on a panel who has made at least two publicly recorded attempts at suicide?
A travesty.

Perhaps the real issue with Tony Veitch is that our broken “justice” system is completely stuffed. Veitch,along with innumerable other people has little chance of getting a fair trial for the simple reason that after two or three years the likelihood of Crown witness recall of events even approaching any acceptable accuracy would be pretty marginal.That anyone at all should have to wait more than 3 to 6 months for their day in court is bloody outrageous and certainly should,in my opinion,after 12 months as a maximum,lead to all charges being dropped.What are the police and the rest of the sloth-like prosecution staff think they are up to? Veitch at the moment,is no more guilty of any offense than we are,indeed should he finally be be acquitted of the charges that he’s currently facing,if there was any justice where plainly there is not,he should be free to sue the Sunday Rags,the Police and his previous employers for everything they have down to their last pint of blood.

The Police just love to make things simple.
The media love a witchhunt.
This is probably not the case, but what if there are extenuating circumstances?
What if the lady, (Not sure this label is entirely appropriate) has made things very blurred by her own drug fuelled abuse and violence?
What if there turns out to be a very good case for Veitch to have brought his own charges?
The whole thing is very messy, but the Public Court of opinion is very fickle.
I actually hope that in Court the balance of gender is towards women. They can smell a falsehood from miles away.
Everyone goes very nervous when the very idea of women being spiteful, abusive and extremely violent is ever mentioned.
Well here in the soon to be bankrupt country, female offending against other women and men, and multiple persons has gone off the Richter Scale.
I don’t know Veitch, and I don’t think I want to. Just give him the benefit of the doubt.
If he is indeed guilty, he deserves the time. If she is majorly contributory, then she should also do time.

Veitch has, from memory, publicly admitted the acts if not the crime.
He stood down from his broadcasting commitments rather than fight to stay.
It seems to me that the situation is as much his fault as anyones but unlike (very D4J) Big Bruv I won’t condemn him without knowing the full story.
I don’t like the prick but neither do I watch or listen to Deaker so if Veitch is prepared to front on Deaker’s TV abortion good on him.
It won’t offend me simply because I won’t see it.

I dont condone what he did but the punishment must fit the crime – the magnitude of his punishment so far is way beyond what even Sensible sentencing would lobby for

Mr Tinman, and the negative karma club, fyi all I was trying to point out was I do find it rather usual that somebody with seven alleged charges of male assaults female will not face trial this year, because I know many sitting out in Paparoa Prison on police remand for alleged similar offenses?

I find myself in agreement with Billyborkers first posting. Justice has been too long delayed and the man needs to face a trial speedily. In the meantime he is trying to work for a living and I for one can certainly understand that.
We do need a shakeup of the justice system-maybe Night Court or some such innovation. It is not fair to the accused to have him hanging out to dry for another year.

Has Far As i am concerned it should Not have been in the public eye.And Anyway the public dont know the truth . But any Abuse is unexitable, and it does not matter who it is. And they will be judged. People need to keep out of it. I wish Tony Vietch all the best.
