I am still waiting with anticipation for Mallards explanation of his ridiculous assertion, telling prospective employees not to seek work with an under 20 staff employer, because they will just get the boot on day 90.

Cmon mallard, we know you are there, pop your head up, you are the one who willingly entered this good news 60%+ arena, take part and explain.

P.S. you are looking tired and really jaded mallard, stress of having to tip over your leader taking it’s toll?

Agreed expat, but I am not intolerant, and in fact most certainly accept that any religion or group has a right to exist, providing the rules of society as the norm are followed.
I am merely pointing out that we are not immune and need to be on our guard, as the enemy is most certainly within, in many forms.
Don’t forget that NZ has a military presence in the fighting arena, i.e. SAS, so we are well & truly involved.

NZ-ers haven’t got a clue about the strategic environment. We will get hit eventually, especially because we are so easy to hit.

So many people think that Islamic terrorists will be nice to us because we are so careful to look at all the niceties of justice before we align ourselves with any causes in the world. Most of us haven’t a clue that the oh so just East Timor cause is all part of the “Crusaders versus Islam” issue that drives these people; and how many hundreds of millions of Muslims are there in Indonesia again? And how many members has “Jemaah Islamiyah” got?

At least the Indonesian government seems a bit more moderate and a force against the terror movements, in contrast to many other Islamic nations governments. But they have a volatile situation with their own people.

PhilBest – Thanks, I am not a particularly good articulator of thought, and you have summed it up quite nicely for me.
The local enemy is only a revolution away, aka Iran etc.
In my opinion, this administration should be looking to upgrade, upskill, and up man our armed forces, dare I say it bring back a strike arm for the airforce.
We are not exactly defenceless, but in the event of armed force being required here in NZ, we are asking an awful lot of our service people.

Bravo Murray, why are the media not asking the real questions about the terrorist attack on the cricketers.

1. Why was the PAKI TEAM BUS INEXPLICABLY DELAYED. The previous two days they had travelled in convoy with the others.
2. Why did the paki cops all disappear when the attack started.
3. Was this attack planned against the Indian team, who wisely canceled their tour and came here instead.
4. Why are the media talking about a gun battle when all eye witness reports and video evidence suggest it was a one sided turkey shoot.
5. Why do the media use terms like “the terrorists fled at the end” when this morning on Skynews the video evidence clearly showed them nonchalantly wandering away when they had finished.

This is a very bad business and I believe if the Indian team had been n that bus we would all be watching CNN reporting live from the Indian-Pak border now as the sikh army goes over the top.
The west will not tame the Islamic beast it is going to be the Indians that fix this problem.

Well said, I was chatting with somebody about this very subject yesterday.

The rise of militant Islam has probably changed the world for ever, within 30 years there will be two worlds, one that we live in and one that Islam rules with an iron fist, the two will never meet nor will they interact.

The West will be under constant attack from the Islamic world, western countries will have to spend unprecedented amounts on security and defence, the people who are around then will look back on the pinko’s of today with scorn and derision for their total sell out of western values and their attitude towards the Islamic world.

Yes finally I am seeing my thoughts written here.
Barnsley Bill is quite correct, the only people who can directly fix the problem in Pakistan are the Indians.
But we need to make sure that we assist them wherever and however we can.

The questions raised are beauties and demand investigation, I heard on the radio this morning that a detail of crack Pakistani covert troops detailed to protect the convoy, just melted away.

The lighting of this particular fuse may not get the desired result for the terrorists (sic) on this occasion, but they won’t give up.

House price paradox: Barfoot & Thomsons sales increased 9% in feb, with an increase of 3.5% on prices from feb last year.

Does this mean prices are increasing even further. How can this occur in a recession. I am confused.

Did you hear the comments from Imran Khan re the terrorist attacks on the Sri Lankan team, when you listen closely to what he is saying you will note that not once did he attack the Islamist nutbars who carried out the attack, Khan used this tragedy to further his own political career while cowering in the face of the Islamofacists.

His rebirth as an islamic moderate and political sage sticks in my throat. He is however very good at looking after his own skin. He is hardly likely to attack the grenade throwing cultists. I fail to understand the pathological hatred the Pakistan cricket teams engender in some.

To me the negatives are far outweighed by the memories of fantastic cricketers that have played for the team.

I also seriously doubt the Pakistan cricket team would endanger their meal ticket by colluding with terrorist scum in such a way although the people who caused the five minute delay in the Pakistani bus may have.

While I guess I understand balance sheets I am no economist (and would never purport to be) so perhaps one of the many informed readers and posters on this blog (that excludes Jacob et al + any Social Creditors still around) ) could explain to me that how, with the Government Accounts blowing out to a multi billion dollar defecit and with the world economy going south at a rate of knots, we are going to manage the borrowing to cover that deficit.

Sure, governments can attempt to raise cash thru bond offers but just who is going to be able to step up to the plate?

What I guess I am saying is that NZ doesn’t have any great number of institutional investors (apart from the ‘Cullen Fund’ – and that’s looking pretty sick) )while offshore investors will probably be focusing much closer to home.

Enlighten me please.

China could go either way as long as they still have hardliners in the CCP.

I would love to think of China as the powerhouse that will get the world economy out of the hole it is in. They show up the post-Christian West’s moral decline starkly. They work, save, invest, and produce; while we borrow, spend, consume, tax and redistribute. They earn a fraction of what we do, yet save 50% of it.

The Keynesian “paradox of thrift” is garbage. It suits immoral post-christian, post-ethical thinkers, to be sucked in by it. The West is finished unless we undergo a revolution in our thinking.

Jim Rogers, George Soros’ ex-right hand man, is candidly saying publicly that Western entrepreneurs and technicians should emigrate to Asia where they are appreciated, echoing Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged”. Atlas is indeed shrugging, in the Western world.

I would hate to think of China as having concealed militarist intentions whereby they will take advantage of the West’s stupidity to finish off militarily the decline that we ourselves have started. I would also hate to see China fall into revolution and civil war internally meanwhile because of the tensions introduced by modernisation, prosperity and inequality, and the current crisis. If I were them, I’d be using their substantial reserves of funds to keep their own country stable, not to prop up the US bubble economy. Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton and the rest of them are way off beam on this – it is all very well to beg China to keep lending them their hard-earned savings, but what if China’s internal situation leads to war?

There has been very little talk of the minimum non parole sentence given to this convicted murderer, Cindy Fairburn.

Compare this to the calls by many for Bruce Emery to have got much more time. There are people who claim that less than five minutes was more than enough time for Emery to stop and think.

Murder accused Cindy Marcia Fairburn talked about poisoning or torturing her former partner on the day she is alleged to have killed him in the bizarre body-on-the-bonnet case.

She drove 13 km with her former partner on the bonnet. If this is not bad enough she drive into an oncoming vehicle seriously injuring and nearly killing the driver.

Why is it when a woman commits a shocking crime like this there is no cry for a harsher punishment?

Corrections boss Barry Matthews is refusing to rule out taking a personal grievance case if he loses his job over an investigation into parole mismanagement.

Appearing before Parliament’s law and order select committee yesterday, Mr Matthews said he had not “come to a view” on whether he would consider a constructive dismissal case should the State Services Commission investigation find he is to blame for persistent parole failings

He headed up an organisation that was manifestly failing to meet even its own standards or care and professionalism. Not once or twice, but consistently. Yet it’s someone elses fault. And the State (ie you and I) could end up paying him for his distress. Sickening.

Matthews is an example of no personal responsibility, no accountability, no willingness to accept criticism, correction or due punishment. We see this in kids, who become teenagers, who become adults, who then act like Matthews. Something has to change.

Ross Miller, your point is extremely important. Theoretically, the US government and most other major nation governments cramming into the international borrowing markets simultaneously, should result in upwards pressure on interest rates internationally. The USA has an unfair advantage in their perceived safety advantage; they are sucking up the lions share of international investment at absurdly low interest rates. Question is what kind of interest rates other nations have to pay to get a share of what is left. One tragedy is that third world nations will be literally bleeding investment money.

Question too, whether there is a limit to what the US economy can sustain in the way of indebtedness vis-a-vis future revenue/cost streams, and whether we might be close to that limit now. Warren Buffett actually says that there is a “bubble” in US Treasury Bonds that is bigger than any of the other bubbles thus far – a frightening concept. There is actually no lack of commentators like Peter Schiff and Gerald Celente and Jim Rogers, promising a collapse in the US dollar and hyperinflation.

On the fundamentals, nations that are debtor nations should suffer a drop in their currencies. Nations that are creditor nations, should have a substantial rise. The longer investment flows have been distorting this reality, the messier the shift when it comes. These distortions have been worsened because creditor nations China and Saudi Arabia, are politically unstable. The other curious thing is that once the currency of a creditor nation ramps up in value, it will make their products less affordable to the rest of the world; Japan is paranoid about this. Japan and other creditor nations need to lose their fear of “good deflation” domestically; falling prices should be the real state of the world when there are constant gains in efficiency and technology, and this was indeed normal before central reserve banking. Switzerland at least seems to have never forgotten this.

Fluctuations in the money supply and asset bubbles inflating and deflating, introduce huge confusion into assessments of the way things could be.

GetStaffed, I simply cannot believe that Barry Matthews’ department’s performance, including after a very public outcry and shake-up, could be as bad as it is other than:

1) a culture of trough-feeding where staff agree among themselves to do nothing and get paid for it
2) a deliberate concealed agenda rooted in liberal “blame society and make excuses for criminals” ideology, that resists the imposition of any other policy; paralleling the worst examples (in humour, not real life) of “Yes Minister”.

I always work on the basis that you should praise somebody when they do well if you are the type who hammers them when they do wrong.

On that basis I have to say that Bill English was fantastic in the house today, English was asked a question by Red Jeanette about climate change and how green jobs were better for climate change etc…

English replied that in the last month “nobody had asked him or the government about climate change policies, they are all far more concerned about jobs”

The watermelons must be shitting themselves, the trojan horse they were so desperate to ride communism in on the back of is disappearing before their eyes.

Benchmark indexes from Hong Kong to London climbed more than 2 percent, with China’s
Shanghai Composite Index jumping 6.1 percent, the most in four months. Treasuries fell,
sending yields on 10-year bonds up 10 basis points to 2.98 percent. The dollar and yen
declined against most major currencies as demand for a refuge from global financial turmoil
diminished. About 11 stocks rose for every two that fell on the New York Stock Exchange.

Grumpy Old Hori reported two days ago about the continuing issue of Settlements in the West Bank – The Israeli “Peace Now” organisation had reported that 72,000 more settlements were planned.

It appears now that this is not the case:

Of those settlements that are proposed – they are currently only in the area of Jerusalem that was not going to be given back by Israel under the peace accord. These blocs were always proposed under the center/left wing governments, so it seems strange now to blame a “hawkish” right wing government in Israel.

Buy New Zealand Made – Gin that is.
We all know the risks of promoting protectionism and we all know we should not be attempting to stifle international trade. But there are times when we can promote a New Zealand product with a clear, if subsequently somewhat muddled, conscience.
My recipe for the Perfect Martini remains popular with the madding crowd with 500 hits to date.
Those who aspire to the Perfect Martini remember the good old days when a decent gin was 42% alcohol while these days we struggle to find one more than the standard 40%. The Martini is one of those drinks were the higher alcohol content contributes to the crisp taste – or so some say. Certainly the highest quality international marks contain between 44 and 50% Vol% alcohol. Presumably because our liquor excise is based on alcohol content such marks have been hard to find here.
However, a local enthusiast has come to our rescue and is producing a high quality gin called Christie’s New Zealand Green Crisp Gin. It’s “quadruple distilled and blended with aromatic botanicals subtly finished with a hint of Native Horopito and Kawakawa”.
I have only bought it duty free so far where it was $26.00 for a litre bottle – and a handsome bottle it is. And it lives up to its description as a “crisp gin” and makes a splendid Martini. I understand the local retail price per litre is about $42.00
But the real joy is in the fine print. Christie’s Green Gin is 47% alcohol so the Consumer can buy New Zealand made and really get more bang for the buck. They also make a London Dry which I have not tasted.
We have made our mark with top quality vodka and we should now do so with our gin.
Next in line should be a New Zealand Irish Whisky or Single Malt. Neither have grain alcohol which means they do not create the allergic reactions so common with us aging folk caused by the grain alcohol (corn based) which underlies the Scotch Whiskey blends…
Please don’t grow corn to fuel our cars or we might end up having to use all the surplus to make regular spirits which I for one won’t be able to drink.
Anyhow, just to cheer us up.

Corrections boss Barry Matthews is refusing to rule out taking a personal grievance case if he loses his job over an investigation into parole mismanagement…

He headed up an organisation that was manifestly failing to meet even its own standards or care and professionalism.

Not only that, his entire professional history is littered with disaster. He ballsed up INCIS, then ducked responsibility by scuttling to WA where he somehow became Police Commissioner (the worst one the state has ever had, with rising crime, an appalling realtionship with the Minister and having alienated his own officers so badly he had to resort to ordering them back to work when they went on strike).

He’s a buffoon and an abject failure. Not only should he be dismissed but so should the fools who hired him. Did they even check his references or is this another Mary Anne Thompson case?

It’s to be hoped if any court is stupid enough to compensate his hurt feelings that the victims of his failures – those harmed by parolees, or their families in the case of murder victims – sue the clown for every penny and then some.
