Lee for Mt Albert?

March 30th, 2009 at 7:36 am by David Farrar

The Herald reports that National List MP Melissa Lee may seek National’s nomination for Mt Albert.

25% of Mt Albert’s residents are Asian and 40% of the total population have lived here for less than five years.

If Lee was the candidate, and did win the seat, then her list spot would be taken up by Cam Calder, who was an MP for around two weeks after the election, before National lost a seat due to specials.

Has no-one told National that LABOUR is the natural party for migrants? Well, that’w what Labour reckoned, prior to the last election. This would be a great selection.

Labour is the natural party of migrants if you mean migrants from Third World countries in the Pacific, East Africa and the Middle East.

Gueez … when I saw the headline I thought ‘Mike Lee’. Now there’s a little leftie about to become unemployed (and probably unemployable unless his Labour mates throw him a lifeline).

But then again Labour isn’t big on lifelines witness the unholy rush to disown Judith Tizard as never was and never happened. Almost up there with David Irving in the denial stakes.

Also in addition to migrants from ME, East Africa and the Pacific add to that English trade unionists who want to become NZ MPs – Labour is natural fit.

No need to digitally alter her image..that alone, makes her a far more honest and attractive option/tick.

Melissa Lee would be an excellent choice.

Heard Phil Twyford trying to up his own profile, banging on about something on the National Radio on Friday. Given the way the electoral trend has swung I don’t fancy his chances. Even if he gets Clarks wholehearted endorsement.

Er, wasn’t that half the reason for having Ravi Musuku there?

[DPF: Ravi is seeking the nomination also]

National may go with a friendly face but Kiwis are already starting to wake up to the fact that they have not elected “Labour Lite” but a typical snarling nasty privatising and cutting Tory Government.

Good PR will only take you so far.

My prediction is that Labour will put up a huge effort and that its activist base will safely return the seat to Labour.

If a non-list MP from National won the seat National doesn’t lose a list MP to retain proportionality, so it seems odd that if a list MP wins they get another list MP and end up with one more MP, if a Labour list MP wins the seat Labour would get another list MP and end up with the same numbers but if Labour lost the seat they wouldn’t get another list MP to compensate.

Have I got it wrong or is it the system?

[DPF: Not quite right. If National wins the seat it gains one extra MP, regardless of who the winning candidate is. If the winning candidate is not already an MP, then National gains an MP. If the winning candidate is a List MP they will resign as a List MP, and get replaced automatically due to a list vacancy]

To clarify what I’ve said above, I mean if a National candidate who’s not a list MP won the seat . . .

    homepaddock,

Your analysis is correct. You cant be a list MP and an electorate MP simultaneously, so if someone like Melissa Lee were to win the seat it would be the same as if they resigned the list seat, and their party would get the next list candidate in as a replacement.

Mt Albert is a Labour-held seat. If the Labour candidate wins the overall numbers in Parliament remain the same (regardless of whether the winning candidate is a list MP or an outsider). If the National (or other) candidate wins then Labour goes down one overall and National (or whoever) gains one overall (regardless of whether the winning candidate is a list MP or an outsider).

  14. Fisiani (644) Says:

If Melissa Lee won the Mt Albert by-election in June then the next National list member in line would be offered a position. They would not automatically take this position. If Cam Calder and Conway Powell deferred then we could have the truly great result of having Stephen Franks return to Parliament.

Politicians should be elected on policy, not on what race they are or the race of the constituency.

It disappoints me to see National participating at this level. But with democracy so run down, I guess that is what politics has become these days. A race amongst races.

huh? is their a new poll out that i havent seen?

or is that just the chatter around the socialist club?

to be honest, the words “snarling and nasty” conjure up images of Cullen and Clark.. you could add spiteful to that too.

I really look forward to more Asian electorate MP’s. These people are well above the average in work ethic and responsibility and bringing up their kids and entrepreneurship and contribution to NZ. They are certainly not default Labour supporters.

True, but isn’t it this that qualifies them rather than their race??

(these attributes that exist mainly because they have been in one way or another isolated from the socially destructive ideas of the Western Progressives)
