My first thought was Hekia Parata, but the style (not ‘title’) Lady can only be used by the wives of those with knighthoods if they use their husband’s surname.
[DPF: Correct. That is why I said eligible - she could style herself Lady Gardiner if she chose to. I think I am on safe grounds, saying it is very unlikely!]

you’re right Graeme – Harawira Gardiner gets her past the post…I was clearly wrong – always get Timoti and Tumu mixed up (I hope she doesn’t!)

Hopefully no one, in this day and age. The honour is awarded to the recipient… for anyone else to try and style themselves something as a result is rather pathetic.
Last “Lady” I head of was Lady Renouf, who’s making quite a name for herself as a Holocaust denier, and seems to receive publicity only because of her “title”, which no journo seems to realise wasn’t awarded to her at all.
Besides, it doesn’t work in reverse so it’s clearly a sexist anachronism… surely none of our enlightened Parliamentarians would betray the Sisterhood?!
Greenfly – I gave you a thumbs up for that one, despite snorting coffee through my nose.

Graeme: according to the Beehive’s Q&A she can use it as a courtesy title in association with her other name
The wife of a knight who, for professional or other purposes uses her maiden name,
may use the courtesy title in association with her other names. For example:
Mary Brown, Lady Smith
Vote:or Miss Mary Brown, (Lady Smith)
or Dr Mary Brown (Lady Smith)
or Lady Smith (Dr Mary Brown)

And I was about to congratulate you in my comment … I then thought “hey – I thought she was Sir Tumu’s brother?” And then I thought, “hey, but Tumu got a real knighthood anyway – before it changed to the DCNZM – so anyone married to him could already use the style Lady.” Then I got even more confused, so left the congratulations out to be safe.

Tumu’s father Sir Hepi got a real gong, Tumu was bestowed his DCNZM in ’04,sans title
Vote:But Te Ariki or Paramount Chief has more mana anyway.

An interesting question about whether the courtesy title might survive scrunity under the BOR?
- Is it the product of govt action?
- Is it unlawful “disrimination” based on gender or marital status?
- Is it a limit prescribed by law?
- Is it justifiable in any event?

I think it’s Georgina Te Heuheu and Buggerlugs was wrong to recant.

There is a Heuheu on the list though isn’t there? What’s the relation?
[DPF: Brother in law]
