So not only is reddy in favour of the State profiting in real estate transactions at the expense of its citizens (see previous posts on Treaty settlements), but now he is in favour of State agencies firing their employees because they speak to the press without prior authorisation. Just how shallow are your principles, reddy? Freedom of speech evaporates when the speaker says something you don’t like? “I disagree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for the right of your employer to punish you for it?”

So, just so we’re clear, if Simon Chapple had been fired after writing his “there is no Maori disadvantage” paper on the grounds that he spoke to the press, your response would have been … what?

AG, careful about the wide generalisation inferring that freedom of speech ALWAYS entitles employees to say whatever they like; irrespective of the implications for the employer or the contractual arrangements the parties may have entered into. It might be appropriate; it might not. If anyone is precluded from talking about something they feel strongly about, they can always buggar off. And if they feel at odds with a prospective employer’s position on something, they can always not sign the contract. Integrity is a two way street. Why should someone at the dog food factory be entitled to slag off the employer for killing horses if he/she/it has undertaken not to? Certainly, the boundaries can blurr – safety practices for example.

I don’t know what Salinger’s alleged indisretion was, but I do recall being at a presentation by him years ago in which he predicted drought, famine and plagues of locusts. I found this prediction curious because it was raining at the time and it was so heavy that visibility outside was down to about 40 metres. Wound up with about 5 inches in 24 hours and the wetest summer in yonks.

I agree with the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 4th Assessment Report. This has concluded that warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global mean sea levels. Most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations. Redbaiter, I think Salinger exposed the entirety of his scientific *credentials* with the statement “I agree with the … Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change…” First, the IPCC is not a scientific body but (like all things UN) a political one. The Great Global Warming Scandal interviewed some of the scientists whose names were attached to the original IPCC report. They said they disagreed with the report and wanted their names removed, but the IPCC refused.

Also, increased temperatures might equal melting ice, but melting ice does NOT equal rising sea levels. It’s a simple experiment. Put an ice cube into a glass and fill it to with water (or vodka, if that’s your preference). As the ice melts, does the glass overflow? Didn’t think so. Global Warming is not, repeat not, science, it is politics. And very, very big business.

Alternatively, you might be an idiot. The concern about ice melt and rising sea level is caused by the rapidly increasing melt rates of the Greenland ice-dome (i.e. ice that is currently ON LAND, but quickly turning into water that then goes INTO THE SEA). So the more accurate analogy is to take a chunk of ice, put it on the draining board next to your sink (with the plug in), then watch what happens to the water level in your sink as that ice melts and runs into it. Capiche?

Alternatively, reddy, posting to an obscure right wing blog isn’t a very good response to hard scientific evidence. And if this really is why “blogs are thriving”, it is a sad indictment of humanities ability to tell crap from quality argument.

For one thing, the blog post you refer to leaps from discussing Tuvalu to an article that discusses the Maldives – an island group some thousands of kilometers away – as if the two are the same (the blog actually says “oceans (sic) levels in that part of the world have been falling in recent years.”) In case you’re wondering, the two island groups aren’t even in the same ocean.

In fact, the only “evidence” your purported “proof” points to is an article in a UK paper (btw … isn’t this a “dying” industry produced by “government arse licking ‘journalists'”? So what is your blog doing relying on it as “evidence”? Or, is it OK to quote papers when they say what you like, but not otherwise?) That article then states:
“Last month a study by Nasa, the US space agency, found that sea levels were being pushed up by the addition of 50 billion tons of water a year from Greenland’s melting ice sheet. Professor Patrick Nunn, head of geography at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji and an expert on island formation, said last week that the figures from Tuvalu, Papua New Guinea and the Solomons were based on inadequate research.
He said: “It is a nonsense to try to make predictions about climate change from a data base of only seven years. You need data over a minimum period of at least 30 years. A lot of these sea gauges have been slowly falling over the last five years but that is a short-term trend. Island countries such as Kiribati and Tuvalu remain incredibly vulnerable to sea change. So let’s have a look at the latest data on the sea level rises:
“new data on sea level from oceano-grapher John Hunter, of the University of Tasmania, may prove crucial in settling the surrounding debates. Hunter told the Listener that his team have used the latest and thus longest data and combined it with satellite altimeter data in order to provide a “reconstruction” of spatial and temporal variation of sea-level rise over the period 1950 to 2001.
This shows that Tuvalu is experiencing a sea-level rise of around 2.3mm a year, plus or minus 1.6mm a year.
“The new estimate is now positive at a quite high level of significance,” says Hunter. “It is unlikely that rise or sinkage of the island is a major factor … It is clear that the ‘sea-level rise problems’ at Tuvalu may have a number of causes, of which one is the rise in mean sea level.

Planet Earth was almost struck by an asteroid a few months ago, it came within a hairs breadth and if it had struck it would release enough energy equivalent to a small nuclear explosion.

Let’s take the first point … you asked for evidence that sea levels have risen anywhere. you’ve been given it. You lost that one.

It’s clear you and scientific thinking are not friends (indeed, I can’t imagine there is much you could be friends with), as this is simply embarrassing. The actual data reveals “a sea-level rise of around 2.3mm a year, plus or minus 1.6mm a year.” Meaning that with 95% confidence, we can say that the sea level rise has been 0.7 mm – 3.9 mm per year … it’s as likely (“possible”) to have been at the higher end as at the lower. This cashes out over the last 30 years to a rise of 2.1cm – 11.7cm … and given most of Tuvalu is less than 1m above sea level, this is “a real concern” (for the Tuvaluans, at least … I’d image you don’t give a crap, ’cause you are an asshole … but anyway).

Also note this rise has occurred prior to the more recent rapid increase in global temperatures due to AGW … which the vast majority of those actually qualified to speak on this subject predict will speed up the increase in sea level rises. Predict. As a scientific hypothesis. Which then will be tested through empirical observation. ‘Cause this is what matters, not right-wing fairy land “it’ll all be OK ’cause I can’t conceive of it not being so thinking.

Now – I put it back on you. If there really is ” a tonne of stuff out there challenging the rising sea levels” around Tuvalu, post it. And I mean real science, not your sweaty-palmed mates of the “blogs will take over the world” school of thinking. Go on. Do it. Or else, you will have to STFU, because … well … you’ve nothing worth saying.

AG, you dickwad, there is no real evidence that sea levels are rising or that they’re rising because of melting ice. There are many scientists challenging your mate’s findings. They are in dispute all over the globe. Do you deny this? (Go on, deny it. Make a complete fuckwit of yourself)

The land could be sinking in line with movements of the continental plate.

…and that’s not the only option. Minor seismic disturbances cause different land areas within the plate to rise and fall. The sea level itself is also not constant due to differences in ocean currents and temperatures. 0.7mm is nothing and proves nothing.

Professor Patrick Nunn, who researches sea level rise at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji, admitted to the London Telegraph, “…A lot of these sea gauges have been slowly falling over the last five years…”

“The historical record shows no visual evidence of any acceleration in sea level trends,” Australia’s National Tidal Facility (NTF) said in a statement about Tuvalu this week .(2002)

You do have sea-level rise threatening many coastal areas of the Pacific Islands. There really needs to be a re-think of Pacific Islands’ dependence on low-lying coastal areas for food production. So, people should be moving food gardens, you know, en masse, into higher ground, and developing food gardens and the infrastructure necessary for surplus production in those areas, rather than continuing to occupy these low-land areas.
