NOt1 the best way to handle criminals like Draper is to keep them in jail for life. Capital punishment isn’t the answer because in the states wrongly accused “criminals” have been put to death. An eye for an eye doesn’t work. While they are there, take their color tv’s away from them, nice beds, dental insurance, eye insurance, vcr’s and all violent films out of the jails and make them work. Chain gangs. Make it a law they have no human rights. This will show to the victims and society that the legal system and mp’s that make the laws respect human life. This mother of the victim won’t have to worry about Draper being released again and feel a lot better. What I have seen here is mp’s and legal system abuse the public by releasing these freaks back out to save money. It is morally wrong.

Murray – I think you read too much into my comment. Where did I say the death penalty is horrible and that we should cuddle criminals. I always wonder whether people would show little compassion if it was one of their family members who killed – would you not want to see them treated, or at least kept alive so they can realise the gravity of what they’ve done?

I do not think Mr Draper will be released until he is a geriatric and presents no risk and can only move about in a zimmer frame, even then it will be on strict terms like no contact with persons under 16. I am told no one under PD has been released yet.

Perhaps we should follow the Czech Republics lead and offer surgical castration as a voluntary option to sex offenders. At least six states in the United States (California, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Louisiana, and Montana) have experimented with chemical castration laws and I would have no problems with at least looking at offering the same treatment to recidivist sex offenders like Draper.

The difference between the terms “preventative” and “preventive” is huge. Preventative detention is looking someone up BEFORE they can commit a crime. Preventive detention is locking them up forever so they can’t commit any MORE crime.

This isn’t greatly important – and I’ve made the mistake myself – but it is “preventive” dentention, not “preventative” detention.

Hell, I even once called it periodic detention!

I just hope that the Parole Board are very very cynical about any professed rehabilitation when he comes up for consideration in six years.

Since the confrontation between Mathews and Collins, it seems hope is all that is left for anyone wanting change. He’ll be out soon enough, back at it, and no one will be held responsible. But that’s ok, it’s not like it’ll come as a surprise when a memeber of the public takes out the trash because Corrections refuse to do their job.
