Wellington City Councillors Ratings
April 16th, 2009 at 4:00 pm by David FarrarThe Wellingtonian has used a panel to do mid-term ratings of the Wellington City Councillors.
I don’t agree with all the ratings, but it is excellent the paper has done them. We don’t get enough reports on how our local elected representatives are doing.

I wish somebody would do one for Christchurch. They’d all get zeroes proabably, then all get re-elected next year!

I agree – great to see this type of performance review happening. Its good for democracy. Its also of course good news for Wellington Deputy Mayor McKinnon, the Greens and Mayor Prendergast who came out of the review with positive comments.
Very bad news for Tawa Councillor Ngaire Best who was assessed as basically all talk no action.
But even worse news for former teen whizz kid – turned worst performing councillor – Hayley Wain – who received universally negative comments. Perhaps her university studies are getting in the way?

It’s good to see the media taking enough interest to bother putting something like this together. And a free paper at that!
Not so keen on the media judging the Councillors and then telling Joe Thick who’s good and who’s not. Can’t they just stick to reporting facts and events?

While I think it is good to get feedback regarding the performance of our local body representatives I am not sure that the views of a few panelists (each with their own barrows to push) properly represent the views of Wellington ratepayers.
The assessment criteria are also somewhat sujective given that longer term councillors may appear more “accessible” purely on the basis that they are more well known.
What democracy really needs is a Councillor Performance site, like IMDB where the people can add their ratings and an aggregated mark published.
This would have more validity and credibility.

mum – website could be a neat idea, though there is a risk that all it might prove is whether the internet contains more right-wing zealots or left-wing zealots!
Anyway DPF would be the man to ask on polling issues like this…?

Looks very good for the Greens.
Green councillors Celia Wade-Brown & Iona Pannett among the top four (along with the Mayor and Deputy Mayor).
I’m feeling far happier now – after lengthy but likely productive discusions tonight re the Mt Albert byelection – which are also likely to have a good result for the Greens.

IMO, after seeing the survey, Hayley Wain should butt out of local politics and get a real job. While at the time it seemed cute for a youngster to win a council position, it is not realkly the sort of job you should be in unless you have gained some experience of lfe first.
