Budget Lockup

May 28th, 2009 at 8:44 am by David Farrar

I’m in the Budget lockup from 10 am to 2 pm, so hope to have some initial posts by 3 pm (there is a rolling embargo which means you can only blog certain stuff as Bill gets to it in his speech).

Until I post further, feel free to use this thread for budget related discussions.

Any posts which appear between 10 am and 2 pm are time delayed from this morning.

It is obvious that the tax cuts promised during the election last year cannot go ahead. Labour are bleating about this already in a manner reminiscent of a petulant teenager who, having been promised a car, whines and moans when it does not eventuate because Dad has been made redundant.

I did not vote National for tax cuts. I voted for prudent economic management to steer us through the bad times and make best use of the good times.

Can someone explain how wealth redistribution is prudent economic management for the bad times when it appears the same method drove us into the bad times. Would not stimulus for increased productivity be a better strategy?

If I were a petulant teen, I’d be whining at my Dad that after telling me for months he was going to buy a new full warranty Toyota for me – after working for free at his company for the past two years – that he would now loan me the money to buy a “classic” ’73 ford escort that only needs some work to get going. Since times were now tough. About that time I’d be thinking it was time to get a new job. Wouldn’t you?

    I’m hoping for some nice slash and burn polices, do hope National kill off some of the bullshit socialist tit sucking organisation’s set up by the last bent administration. The list of course is vast, a few examples;

    Ministry of woman’s affairs.
    The race relations commissioner.
    The children’s commissioner.
    The families commission etc, etc.

Cutting this crap, should save us hundreds of millions. Of course the howls of outrage and crocodile tears well flow, so sad never mind.

No there is an analysts lock up as well. The journo lock up us better though as you get out earlier (or used to).

@side show bob – they are all good ideas but unless you are willing to tackle health, education, and welfare its all tinkering at the margin.

    Mmmm…. journos locked up.

    There are journalists in NZ?
    When did that happen?

I haven’t seen any evidence of this on tv lately.
