I thought it was ‘blog silence’ this weekend. Either Telecom or Vodafone have improved coverage, or DPF has borrowed an old wok and improvised a satellite link.

Two days ago, I read a report that the illegal immigrants who are detained on Christmas island are receiving thousands of dollars in benefits from the Australian government for breaking Australian law by breaching our border security.

One report has a family of four receiving $1066 per fortnight for food – more than many Australian resident families would receive from the government when faced with extreme economic hardship.

Of course, the payment made to the illegal arrivals reportedly doesn’t include the free accommodation (yes that’s right – a house in the community not a jail cell!), internet access and an unrestricted phone card so they can contact family and friends . One can only imagine the reports of the land of milk and honey during these taxpayer funded phone calls.

Speaking of Australia, did anyone catch the news item last night about Australian armed forces gearing up to be the America of the Pacific? Apparently the U.S. aren’t big enough to protect Aussie anymore and they want to be able to fight off most of Asia, but would prefer not to go to war with China. haha.

So much for Helen Clark’s benign strategic environment. We can only hope the Australians invade soon.

Point was, when Clark said that, everyone in the business knew then that what’s now happening was going to be happening. And she still said it, and the reef-fish believed it and the media didn’t challenge it and neither did the opposition politicians at the time.

So we lost the opportunity to configure ourselves properly because instead of de-fanging the military all those years we should have been doing the exact opposite. And she knew it, at the time and she still did it. Another demonstration of her execrable tendency to implement plans that serve her personally but damage the nation.

Fuck she’s a bitch.

But there’s a little ray of light on the horizon there, reid. Wayne Mapp was talking of fitting in with the Australian forces plans and buying equipment to compliment theirs. I was almost gob-smacked. Sensible thinking at a last!

Yes that’s a very good sign gg but IMO, until we make peace with the US over the anti-nuke issue we will never be secure (and this is the reality whatever the public spin is and anyone who thinks we have already made peace and cites the various releases from officials as evidence, is IMO, naive in the extreme). And this is notwithstanding the US influence is declining – its technology remains superior and will do for some time to come.

Key moving the issue off the table was a long-term strategic error for our national security and he did it for the sake of a domestic political quick win. In my view when you’re talking about national security it’s important to put the nation first and your own interests second, always. Key didn’t do that.

On another note, have a look at this video which details what the Clinton Administration did to force banks to lend to minorities which became the genesis of the sub-prime Collateralised Debt Objects (CDOs). Guess who was the lawyer for one of the main minority representative groups that took litigation against the banks to implement this? Obama.

Lest anyone think this lets the Bush Admin off the hook for their part in the GFC debacle, au contrare. All this does is further reinforce what I’ve always said – both sides are bad. Anyone BTW been following the Rice admission re: conveying to the CIA the torture memos?

“By definition,” she repeated, “if it was authorized by the president, it did not violate our obligations under the Convention Against Torture.”

Before you get too excited, the minister is also quoted as saying that our present levels of defense expenditure (which have halved in the last decade) are about right. Compare with Australia whose expenses have about doubled in the same period and seem ready to double again.

Quite right bharmer. Low spending relative to GDP has been a problem since the early 80’s and every year you leave it like that the worse it gets because other nations are outstripping you all the time.

Wish there were more public awareness of the peril of this long-standing issue.

Dunne: Government’s NZAID moves concerning
UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne today said he was disappointed that NZAID was being reabsorbed back into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and that he hoped that the country’s aid efforts did not become politically driven.
“While UnitedFuture supports the focus on the Pacific announced today, there are some very real concerns about what is happening here – not least being the lack of public debate and consultation in coming to these decisions,” Mr Dunne said.
“It’s an unwise and unhealthy way to come to policy positions on issues as significant of New Zealand’s aid contribution without any substantive consultation with the sector that does the work, and that simply hasn’t happened here,” he said.
Mr Dunne said he was also disappointed that the Government has not committed to New Zealand’s aid contribution being 0.7 percent of gross national income (GNI) by 2015.
“New Zealand and New Zealanders have a long standing sense of our global obligations and supporting those less fortunate. That is not as well reflected in today’s Government announcement as it should be,” he said.
