Qs about XT Mobile Network?
May 20th, 2009 at 7:40 pm by David FarrarOver at the ffunnell site, you can ask questions about Telecom’s new XT Mobile Network. Just ask away, and you should get a response straight away.
ffunnell is something you may hear more of. It is the online media advertising network for some of the larger independent online publishers. They include:
There will be more details on this over time for interested advertisers. The network has an audience of 1.3 million unique browsers a month and 1 million page views a week.

Do I have questions about Telecom’s XT network? Hell yes. I’ll be at my local Orb at 8:55 Friday week to get the BB Bold. I’m just hoping the data plans are in line with Paul Reynolds’ aim to have 50% of the mobile market. What’s leaked so far has been encouraging but not specific.

It will take a lot more than a flash media advertising network to get me to use a Telecom service again (apart from the lines monopoly I unfortunately have to put up with whatever ISP and landline service I choose).
A couple of years ago it took them a month to get an adsl line into my new home! Turned out that they had repeatedly told my ISP/landline provider that they had checked the adsl connection and it was functional, when what had actually happened was they each time checked only the paperwork which said it was functional (even though it was not).

the only thing you will need to know about the new network is that it is going to run at GSM850 mHz. Vodaphone runs at 800 and I think 900, 1400 and 1800 comes into it somewhere.
So the new Telecom system is not compatable with Vodaphone.
You wont be able to take your existing vodaphone handset and change to telecom, or vice versa.
Vodaphone still have their G2 network and the new telecom phones will work on it – but its only a voice network – not texts etc.
And internationally there will still be roaming problems with a GSM850 handpiece.
Telecom again paces itself ina place where they are obviously scared to really compete. Call prices will not be reducing so it will still come back to a regulator.

why are you running xt’s mkt research for them? if they dont know what people want to know about a mobile network a few weeks out from the launch they are truely retarded and reynolds needs to fire his marketing team.

Check out this link David. If you want to make money from your advertising network you may need to consider banning Redbaiter and his little gang of thugs

David, you risk being accused of selling out to commercial interests. First, letting your image be used in the Powershop campaign. Now, a blog post about your ad network and the XT launch.
If we dig a little deeper, will we find a large sum of money from Owen Glenn nestling in your bank account?
(Psst — don’t be too quick to deny even knowing the man. We have photos from a certain race meeting …)

Unmitigated Garbage. Here are a list of phones, vodapafone or otherwise which support 850mhzUMTS:
Linky for phones
Among those, You’ll find such stalwarts as the iPhone 3g, Nokia N96 etc. As vodafone do not lock their phones, you’ll be able to just pop in an XT sim and away you go.

DPF – what’s you definition of “straight away?” I’m still waiting….
[DPF: Same! Maybe they are not aware it has gone live!]

I’m with GTP. I asked a question last night and allowing for sane working hours and the fact that I don’t expect them to be flooded with questions through ffunnell (cool name btw) just yet in spite of your collective power, the ‘straight away’ part seems a little optimistic. It may require qualification to stave off unreasonable expectations.

Does anyone know if the Telecom WorldMode phones, that have both CDMA and GSM, will work on the new XT network?

That part of the XT Network banner ad with the flying phones and little letter images looks suspiciously like a Richard Killeen knockoff to me too.

Now that I have had some time to do some research, it appears that if the WorldMode phone has GSM 850 MHZ capability, then users will need an XT SIM card to be able to use the phone on the new network (rather than the O2 SIM card that would have come with the WorldMode phone originally).
However as mentioned above, as GSM 850 MHZ isn’t that common overseas, haven’t Telecom just gone and done another CDMA for when users need to roam?

Some useful clarification, given the misinformation floating in the comments:
1. The XT Network is NOT GSM!! It is WCDMA, operating on a frequency of 850mhz supported by infill capacity at 2100mhz in the major cities. Therefore for a phone to work on the XT Network it ideally needs to be a WCDMA phone at 850/2100 – existing Vodafone 900/2100 phones will work on XT, but only in the major cities where XT has 2100 infill coverage. WCDMA phones are all dual band, either 850/2100 or 900/2100. Most, if not all WCDMA phones also support GSM – i.e. WCDMA and GSM at quad band, being 850/900/1900/2100. Telecom XT does NOT have a GSM network like Vodafone.
2. Vodafone’s current network offering is made up of two parts – a WCDMA network at 900/2100 and a GSM network at 900. Existing Vodafone mobiles will work on XT in major cities if they are Vodafone 3G devices, but as they are dual 900/2100 they will be limited to where XT has 2100 infill coverage.
3. There are currently more WCDMA 850 devices worldwide than there are 900; global support of WCDMA at 850 is on par if not greater than 900. Australia, Asia and North America are pedominantly 850/2100, Europse is a mix of 850/2100 and 900/2100.
4. For international roaming, XT devices will be able to roam to 200+ countries, on either WCDMA networks at 850 or 2100, or GSM networks at 850, 900, 1900 or 2100. Roaming capability for XT customers will be equal with that offered by Vodafone, potentially greater?
5. Existing Worldmode phones, which are dual CDMA/GSM, will NOT work on the XT Network is it is 3G WCDMA only.
Hope that helps!

Just to harp on, “straight away” so far includes waiting at least until 3pm. You may have to check emails are actually being received by someone breating air

Thanks ABC – almost as clear as mud! – sort of fits in with the telecom marketing plan – which if I recall was based on “confusion”.
I knew some of the phones are cross compatible but I was told that they are the top end most expensive ones – which pretty much rules them out for the masses.
My understanding is that effectively the two networks are not compatible if you want coverage as good as is currently available (and I dont know why anyone would want limited inner city coverage only)
