It’s all rather clever isn’t it. Let Rodney off the leash while saying you don’t agree with his views. You get the dirty work done and with some luck the backlash will be against ACT and not National. Whatever. I know people who have lived in their family homes for 30+ years that are facing having to sell because they can’t afford the accumulated rates, water, rubbish charges with rampant councils increasing costs 200-400% in excess of inflation for many, many years. This is not sustainable, it is something that needs reigning in. I hope Rodney does such a good job that ACT is in serious trouble at the next election. If you know what I mean.

Always make that extra effort to help disabled people, they deserve the best.

The first time I met Deanna was after work one day when I was sitting by the riverside playing my guitar. My mum happened to be taking her for a walk (pushing her along in her wheelchair). I played her one of my songs, and asked her if she liked singing and she said yes and tried to sing me a song, but she struggled to get the words out coherently. I know she tried her best.

Later we went to the supermarket and we got drinks but because they didn’t have individual straws she spilled her drink all over herself and was embarrassed, even though it’s not her fault she was the way she was.

She was such a good person, always being friendly and smiley around others even though we failed her.

Mum used to always tell me that I needed to go visit her more, and that she’d already tried committing suicide before, but I was lazy and just simply ignored her suffering. I was too caught up in trying to make life better for myself and chasing the things that I wanted, when all the time there was someone who really needed me to go see them. I should’ve done more to make life worth living for her.

My mum gave her a coat and she really valued it, she actually wore it on the night she died and took it off before setting herself alight.

Deanna isn’t the first disabled person my mum cares for who’s committed suicide. The other was a guy from my school, who became disabled after getting elbowed in the head while playing basketball. He couldn’t take it anymore either and ended his life too.

They don’t deserve it. Whatever we can do to make the world a better place for them we have to.

Please, if you know anyone who is suffering from a disability and depression, don’t let them feel like there’s nothing worth living for anymore.

UNIVERSITY STUDY PROVES GREEN “JOBS’ A COSTLY FARCE.

More Watermelon lies and propaganda exposed. From a spanish University report on the economics of creating green jobs-

“The arithmetic of green jobs is ineluctable and grim. For each utility worker who moves from conventional electricity generation to renewable generation, two jobs at a similar rate of pay must be foregone elsewhere in the economy, otherwise the funds to pay for the excess costs of renewable generation cannot be provided. Moreover, by raising costs throughout the economy, high cost green energy will reduce the competitiveness of exporters, thereby destroying (presumably well-paying) jobs in such industries.”

Please, if you know anyone who is suffering from a disability and depression, don’t let them feel like there’s nothing worth living for anymore.

Rebel – the simple act of helping someone is reward enough in intself I have found. But saying that, many disabled people shun help because they so want to be independent. They have their pride. I saw a woman trying to get into her car from her wheelchair a few weeks back. She dropped a wheel into the curb and couldn’t get the angel right to leverage her way out of the chair into the car seat. I crossed the road and offered to help and she bit my head off. I didn’t take it personally, and had to admire her tenancity. She did it in the end.

Anyone else seen grababid.co.nz ? It appears to be a complete fraud run from Canada, where you pay to make a bid (every time you bid) and the last person to bid on an item (the price remains the same) wins it, except that every time someone bids the timer is extended by 20 secs. In theory a $10 item could have $1000 worth of bids placed for it (or more). But after googling it seems also that the more expensive items are usually won by the same bunch of usernames, even across different countries, suggesting the usernames are likely fabricated by the company so they don’t actually have to provide the goods at all.

Good on you Brian, and that’s cool she wanted to do it by herself. I was walking to Foodtown this morning and it was raining so I had an umbrella with me, and this guy on a wheelchair was waiting at the lights and I asked him if he’d like me to walk with him so he can be under my umbrella and he said no but thank you. I can understand they don’t want to seem like they have to be dependent but there is nothing wrong with receiving an extra bit of help if it makes things more convenient, it’s got nothing to do with thinking less of them.

I used to work at Fendalton New World in Christchurch and this woman would come in and one of us checkout operators would have to push her around the store and help her get things off the shelf. She was such an incredibly grateful person and it really does help when they’re happy for you to help them because it also makes you happy to help them too.

Sorry that I am a bit of a luddite, but I have not yet ordered anything off amazon.com

Could someone here who has give me the inside word, The book I’m after is $20.99 us, at one of those other stores on amazon, (about $32nz), is it worth just buying 1 book at a time for the postage, or should I wait till there is a few I’d like?

Amazon postage is pretty steep at times and somewhat inflexible. I’d buy several at once so that you get beneift of the standard cost package they send them in. Depending on the book it may be better to source from another supplier – you may be able to get the storekeep to charge you actual postage rather than what is calculated from Amazon’s web site.

Amazon will however have your book to you within a couple of days because they mail it direct. Many local places will take the order and bill you then wait till they have neough orders for a shipment.

I generally like to get books about 4 or 5 at a time.

racer1, if you click through until the last screen before you place your order you’ll see how much it’ll cost you in NZ dollars – including postage. That’s usually the point where I decide whether or not to go ahead with it.

TV3 news led with a story about so-called eco bulbs. According to the consumer researcher (who had these bulbs lined up in a lab situation) they are brighter than incandescent bulbs and they use less power. Excellent. The chap then went on to explain that John and Jane consumer weren’t doing their research properly if they didn’t agree that eco bulbs were brighter. He then followed this with an explanation that recessed-fitting didn’t allow the light to escape from the bulb properly.

So my contention is this Mr Consumer Researcher: You didn’t do your research property. You set up a bank of blubs in a non-typical configuration that allowed for easier side-by-side testing… yet that situation doesn’t come close to regular modes of use by consumers.

Still I guess when Consumer.org.nz payer for TVC slots in the first ad break (like tonight) they should expect some kind of advertorial support from the broadcaster.

Oh, and TV3 waited until the very end of the story to append small caution about breakages, hazardous mercury handling (avoiding inhalation, ventilating rooms, need for gloves etc) and the need for careful recycling activities for which the user may have to pay.
