Goodhew new Junior Whip
June 16th, 2009 at 12:06 pm by David FarrarAs I predicted Chris Tremain has gone from Junior Whip to Senior Whip, and the new Junior Whip is Jo Goodhew – a fellow member of the Class of 2005.
Both Tremain and Goodhew won what were safe Labour seats in 2005. Napier had been with Labour for decades, and Chris Tremain has made it an incredibly safe seat for himself. It helped to have Russel Fairbrother as the opponent, but Tremain is hugely high profile and popular in Napier.
Likewise Goodhew won Aoraki off Jim Sutton in 2005, turning a 6,500 deficit into a 6,500 margin, and she increased that to 8,000 on teh new Rangitata boundaries.
Both will be Ministers sooner rather than later – possibly even in this term if Key does a reshuffle before the election.

Has NZ had a woman as whip before?
Oh – the thought is tingling!
[DPF: Many. Joy McLauchlan, Heather Roy, Jill Pettis, Steve Chadwick etc]

On Homepaddock’s site yesterday I predicted that very team in that order.
Vote:Great for gender balance and geographical representation.
They will make a better team than Helen’s only son Darren Hughes and the hugely cynical(since her electorate defeat last year) Steve Chadwick. All Chadwick does is nod her head when Phil Goff opens his mouth while Hughes tries to make points of order to impress folks..
Guy and Tremain were an outstanding team.

Or if more Ministers go down the path of the Worthy Rooter.

And DBP just used a whip.

Thanks DPF.
You forgot to mention that Helen Clark had the whip in hand most of the time as well.

10 points if you can name National’s equivalent – he’s in all the tv shots of Key, just behind his left shoulder

David, is it Tremain’s work or memories of his old man that make him popular ?

Two very good moves by John Key, especially moving Joe up. Both bring a huge improvement in life experience and backgrounds compared to the former sleazy old school tie old boy Richard Worth and the sooner Goodhew is sitting at the big round table the better.

Stephen I won’t claim those bonus points but he’s now on right of John’s shoulder. Jo Goodhew on the left.

grumpyoldhori:
from what i’ve seen Chris Tremain is extremely hard working in the electorate – cannot comment on Wellington.
Vote:He is here, there and everywhere in the electorate though – also friendly and approachable.

The topic enticed me to compare caucuses. Is it just me or does the Labour party caucus seem tired and old. Full of former govt MP’s who really had nothing to do except try to keep out of Klarks way while she tried to position herself for the job she now holds.
