Holmes rates the senior MPs

June 1st, 2009 at 10:00 am by David Farrar

Paul Holmes in his HoS column rates the performance to dates of the senior MPs. I list them below by rating:

10/10

John Key

Lockwood Smith

9/10

Tariana Turia

Pita Sharples

Judith Collins

Annette King

Simon Power

David Cunliffe

8/10

Rodney Hide

Russel Norman

Paula Bennett

Bill English

Gerry Brownlee

7/10

Phil Goff

Normally 7/10 would be a good rating, but not so much when everyone else is rated 8/10 or higher.

The ratings seemed to indicate how who Holmes likes and who he wants to suck up to the most. Tells you more about Holmes than anything.

What the hell is this cuddlefest?

Half this lot would be getting 5 or less by any rational system.

    Russel Norman (Greens)

Has developed an easy style and projects himself and his party with a pleasant moderation.

With comments like this I tend to agree with bchapman and Murray.
I am yet to see one pleasant thing come out of Normans mouth.

Jesus wept! Holmes rates… hold the presses!
Who gives a rat’s arse who HOLMES rates!!!
Good to see though, that Key is at the top of a worthless list.
High score from Holmes, Key’s credibility nose-dives!
Had to laugh at you MichaelS – “I am yet to see one pleasant thing come out of Normans mouth.”
What the hell were you looking for – butterflies and daisies floating out as he talked??

[DPF: As half a million people read his column in the HOS, quite a few care who he rates. As he hosts Q&A also, again quite a few care]

The bigger insult for Russel Norman is that he was rated alongside the twin loosers, English and Brownlee. He’ll be pissed!

I agree these ratings are complete bollocks.

    8/10 for Paula Bennett????

Sounds like Holmes would be giving Melissa Lee a 9/10 for her by-election campaign judging by his ratings here.

I agree about Lockwood Smith. He has made parliament a far more disciplined and proud institution. There is respect in the house now, except for Mallard who will never learn. Lockwood Smith impresses with impartiality and leaning over backwards to protect the minority. What an inspired choice ! Also, a real gentleman.
Don’t undervalue Bill English. He is the action man of the government, the Bill Birch of the government. Key is a nice person, English a nice person but he carries the can economically. He has a strong political touch, he is the strong man of the government. After all, he came back from a frightful hammering in 2002.
Brownlee will improve now that Cullen is out of the house. Cullen ran rings around Brownlee in the early part of the term.

Paul Holmes? Rating ANYbody?? I have deliberately avoided Q&A because he is fronting it. To call him a “journalist” is to denigrate a term that has been already been devalued to some extent.

I do wonder what Mr. Holmes based his ratings on….apart from a random spasm when he put his fingers over the number pad. 8/10 for Ms. Bennett with the disastrous spankin rankin appointment? Please..be serious.

    Holmes?

There once was a very average but rather embarrassing television talking head/teleprompter reader by that name (he should have applied for the US President’s position based on that – he might have got it) but I know of no -one who should be taken seriously of that name.

In some ways, I don’t really care whom Paul Holmes rates, either. The ‘ratings’ are merely his opinion, and are no more or less use than mine.

I do agree with him about Lockwood Smith. Dr Smith might well be exacting utu for being side-lined contemptuously to The Speakery for his imagined sin about what he said about small Asian hands.
But he is a damned fine Speaker.
I haven’t seen a Speaker give his own party such stick for a long time — they must be loathing him for his steady insistance that Ministers answer questions.

And he is utterly fair! The worst thing that Opposition MPs such as Trevor Mallard and Darren Hughes could do is to needle him and alienate him. Boys and girls: he bends over backwards to give you a fair suck of the sav.

And Dr Smith manages most of all of it with a steady grin. Ten out of 10 from me, too, Lockwood.

Paula Bennett is rated far too low — she should be 9.9/10. Yes, I know, the press hackery are mischievously spreading tales about how she is a disappointment and that she is not up to the job, and that ‘Notice-me-notice-me’ Christine Rankin was an ‘inappropriate’ choice for the Families Commission. And she might be. But as the Taranaki Daily News said a week or so ago — let’s wait and see what she does.

The press hackery live in their own incestuous little world. I suggest to you that out in the suburbs and the provinces Paula Bennett is rated very highly. She hasn’t cut benefits, nor has she raised them. But she gives people the feeling that the State is not hounding them over how they discipline their children, not how they feed their kids, that no-one is wagging their finger at them and self-righteously lecturing them. The press hackery will have no idea about how much of a relief that is.

Bennett is a straight-talker, and she is unafraid to wade into a fight. The press hackery underestimate her at their peril.

Don’t forget she’s one thing most of the “female” Labour MP’s aren’t – she’s relatively attractive.

I agree with Holmes about Lockwood Smith. He has done a good job.

Holmes otherwise well and truly had his rose tinted glasses on, and his comment about needing their patronage on his program is somewhat telling.

Key is not worth 10, choosing Melissa Lee and not vetting or vetoing Rankins were bad and his failure to deliver tax cuts (where by the way is my tax cut that he promised) is already starting to hurt. English has come up with the budget of broken promises, Brownlee has made more mistakes in the house than any leader I can recall, Power has been efficient and ruthless, Collins inefficient and ruthless, Bennett inefficient and rueful.

Turia has been a passenger while Sharples has been competent, Norman the most ungreen MP for the Green Party I have ever seen, and Hyde’s only credible claim to fame is that he occasionally wears a gaudy yellow jacket.

Holmes’ description of Goff is accurate but his rating far too low, and his descriptions of Cunliffe and King are both accurate and deserved.

The omissions were understandable. Anne Tolley in Education is notable – one confused lady. I am not sure what Jerry Brownlee has done to get on this list.

Lock wood smith is obviously better here than in Cabinet. Actually Simon Power could get a 10 from me.

Rodney Hide is very influential and deserves his place. Some hassles with the Nationals will come up with ACT at some stage I think because of this.

Im not sure with Turiana Turia rates above Pita Sharples .. but overall Holmes has it sussed

    “Holmes is a “commie”?’

NZ politics has been dominated for too long by the preponderance of left wing liberals in the media. Never more so than by TV One, and the Holmes show on that station has always been a good example of their partisan political bent.

TVNZ has for decades provided the opportunity for snivelling Labour party sycophants to make personal fortunes from preserving the big government status quo, by networking with their socialist mates, and promoting socialism whenever they could. At the expense of objective reporting.

Holmes is no Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh. TVNZ is no FOX news. The whole tone of that broadcaster and the people who work there has always been extreme left.

(and FOX is not right wing either. Owner Rupert Murdoch endorsed Hillary Clinton for President. Many FOX executives are known to donate to the Democrat party. Just because FOX is not as left wing as TVNZ or CNN does not automatically make it right wing).

Ipso facto, Holmes is a commie.
