Last year during the general election (having two phone lines into this house) I got two calls from the [insert_self_serving_law_breaking_corrupt_party_name_here] asking me if I had been out to vote for [insert_self_serving_law_breaking_corrupt_party_name_here]

I wonder if the [insert_self_serving_law_breaking_corrupt_party_name_here] will use such illegal tactics in this by-election?

burt it is not illegal to call people (or knock on their door) and ask whether they have voted and if they need a lift to the polling booth. It is however illegal to tell them who to vote for on election day.

rochelle – is it legal to put the fear of God into immigrants by telling them that they MUST vote or face prosecution, accompanying them not only to the polling station but into the booth itself, and telling them who to vote for?

She said (both times – same caller) Have you been out to vote for the [insert_political_party_with_zero_regard_for_rule_of_law_name_here] party. Both times I asked for the callers name (caller ID was blocked) and both times she refused to supply her name. I guess I could have called the police and laid a complaint but the chance of having it investigated when it is a [insert_political_party_with_zero_regard_for_rule_of_law_name_here] party breach of electoral law is, as we know, remote.

Of course it is a problem. I think your view of how well the Labour party adhere to the law and the reality are different animals. I made it very clear to the caller the first time that they were doing an illegal thing and that didn’t stop them the second time. Guess that “training” is a waste of space when there is an election to win.

EDIT: As an aside – I live in a safe Labour seat so it is all a bit moot really. Pissed me off all the same that Labour show no respect for the law when it is expedient not to.

burt, my view of how well they adhere to the law is based on what I have seen. I have seen the door-canvassers and phoners being briefed and trained before they do it. I’m not disputing that what you said happened happened. My advice would be to anyone who ever has that happen would be to call our headquarters. I think you’d find we’d be fairly concerned and get the person responsible taken off canvassing duties.

Taken off canvassing duties… What about charging them with an illegal practice? If what you say is correct and they are told what not to do and what they should be doing then the woman was deliberately breaking the law.

How would you react if you got a call ‘have you been out to vote National yet?’

burt yes I wouldn’t be adverse to someone doing that being charged. Our door and phoning scripts have big capital letters on them instructing canvassers NOT to tell people how to vote, or anything along those lines.
