Well the jury will be in soon enough to show how much of that popularity remains after the huge example of loyalty the PM showed to his candidate, poor Melissa Lee, and the misplaced loyalty he continues to show to former MP and former Minister Worth (one of the “likely lads” in the old boys club). The grip I’m beginning to see is the one being placed around that southern dirk ready for the plunge. Have you noticed how quiet English has been lately? And blind ambition doesn’t recognise the polls!

An awful lot of keystroke time is being wasted on whether-he-is or whether-he’s-not going to have a go at the leadership. Far too early in the man’s career. But the leader who should be watching his back has got to be John Key. He asked the media and the country at his press conference today to trust his judgement…the same judgement which had him pick a real winner in Madame Lee and the Minister of Internal Affairs (Freudean wouldn’t you say) and then the misjudged $50m for the cycleway to help build tourism numbers from a cycling market representing 2% of NZ’s visitor numbers. He’s a nice guy, John Key, but he’s making too many miscalculations and getting Bill English’s back up (especially over the cycleway) such that English will pull out that daggar and use it. He’s itching for a go.

It seems Shearer is being groomed for the role by Phil-in Goff, who wants the future of Labour to be towards the centre (that is -the right-wing end of labour) -either that or simply not so loaded with far left unionistas. Helen didn’t really groom anybody to immediately follow her, and based on her leadership style would not tolerate a strong leadership contender within her caucus, always chomping on her ass. Phil however, seems to be content to allow someone ambitious and potentially stronger than he into the fold. I expect he will promote Shearer quickly into a key shadow ministerial role – Foreign Affairs/ Defence/ Police? With Annette King likely to retire soon, Goff needs to bolster the right of labour – I bet they are kicking themselves they never got to Key before National did!

It is interesting to guess at what is going on anyway. Time will tell

I’m laughing at how the left are trying to distract from this by saying “Don’t be stupid, he’s Goff’s man, Goff’s mate, hand-picked etc etc..”. Goff’s happy for sure, Little on the other hand has just seen his main competition arrive.

Rather too much huffin’ and puffin’, chaps. Surely the real question is why the Minister got the boot? And aren’t we grown up enough to know? This thread seems like a pubescent beat-up, know what I mean? Try again in a number of years and your horse might grow some legs and start to run. In the meantime can’t we have something a bit more meaningful– surely to God there’s enough going on to get your gummies into?

Thats because he didn’t stand for anything. All he did was repeat back to people the things they said were concerning them, and used the word “communities” alot. Oh, and lots of nice, warm fuzzy words. I don’t think he talked once about policy. He did say he was against the motorway and I note he has reneged on that already and is simply talking about minimising disruption- which is what John Boscawen was saying all along.

A day in the job and the right wing spin is that Shearer is a future Brutus to Caesar Goff.
Great stuff even if Rome & Shakespeare got their first. What a tragedy for Goff that the man he chose as candidate for Mt Albert stabs him in the back. And lets never forget that it was Hooten & Whaleoil & DPF who were farsighted enough to see it first.

Shearer for Leader – I could think of a lot worse within the Labour caucus and probably not many better. There will be worried minds amongst those who sat back and let Goff takeover the leadership, knowing that he would fail and thinking they could step in. I think though that the knives will be out soon to head this off but i also expect one more leadership failure in Labour before we see the person to be the next Labour PM. Is Shearer aiming to top your list DPF of those fastest to become PM from entering Parliament?

I expect that the private security firms will be paying for the food at the Shearer BBQ’s. Lots of fried chicken and duck I expect.

Hmm – I wonder what Andrew Little is thinking at the moment?

This would please me greatly. The only difference between John Key and the Labour party is that the majority of the right are actually stupid enough to buy into his left wing bullshit. If not for the fact that Goff doesn’t stand up for the principles he once held alongside Prebble and Shirley I actually respect him a lot more considering he was once a Douglas supporter, as opposed to our current dickhead PM who (for the sake up sucking up to appease the ignorant public) considers him to be too ‘radical’ and ‘extreme’ to become a Minister in his government.
