On Wednesday evening at Backbenches various Young Labour members were very excited, telling everyone who would listen that Melissa Lee had parked her car on a disabled parking spot.
This was then given more publicity by Trevor Mallard who blogged at Red Alert:

Just stupid. Can two days pass without her cocking up?
Remember she is John Key’s handpicked candidate.
Both lack judgement.
The post has now been struck through. Why?
Well Melissa did not park there. She took a taxi to Backbenches. The car was a supporter’s car. The supporter is disabled and had his disability card displayed in the windscreen – something that anyone could have easily checked. Egg. Face. Ouch.

Add to this that Paul Henry on TVNZ were quite happy to make a lot of fun of the story on Breakfast the following morning. I think he got the news from Guyon. It now appears they did not check their “facts”. Just proves that Breakfast TV is all about entertainment and nothing about news. Wharfe – I would agree but people like Mallard know that when you do this most people will hear the original story and far fewer the actual facts – partly because the media are far more interested in doing the original story than the follow up and partly because people just like to hear the former story and turn off to the second.
He knows you can’t fool all the people all the time but all you need to do is fool some of the people some of the time.
So Mallard knew that whatever the true facts, his story would be worth so many votes tomorrow – dishonest on his part but would you expect anything else.

There’s a certain irony about accusing someone of “lacking judgement” when you publish unsubstantiated insinuations about someone. Especially when they turn out to be false.

And at the risk of being off topic are you happy with the way your demerit system works – would you be ok about it being copied, (ip and all that) and what are the triggers for longer suspensions?
Or would it be better for the tone of our site to moderate all comments from individuals after they have been offensive – obviously we are trying to build a place where there can be public debate on a wide range of policy issues rather than just straight politics.
[DPF: Very happy for the system to be copied. The longer suspensions are for repeat offenders - your first suspension is 1 week, the second one 2 weeks, the third one a month. It gives people an incentive to stop pushing the boundaries.
Important thing is to make clear they are a guideline only and you retain discretion.
Placing some people on moderation is not a bad system also, but you may need an extra plugin to do that]

In all my years of perusing this site I have seen maybe 5 or 6 comments actually deleted. DPF leaves them up normally and just applies demerits, like Murrays comment above about beating you to a bloody pulp. If someone is being an idiot – it’s there for all to see.
Contrast that to the other (your) side of the political spectrum and we have, for example -
Idiot fella – no comments allowed as they may challenge his intellectual giantisim. – result – echo chamber
The Stranded – comments deleted, bannings handed out willynilly to perceived opponents, comments dissected by moderators ravings – result – echo chamber
Tumeke – comments censored, comments deleted, nothing allowed through that shows up the authors complete lack of intellectual giantism – result – echo chamber North Korean styles.
Are you seeing a pattern yet Trev?
On the thread linked to in this post you seem to be adopting bits of all three of the above echo chambers. Any guesses what the result will be?
Its possible that the authoritarian streak is just a symptom of left political thought. Whereas the right side of the spectrum is a little more open to opposing views and less in need of complete control.
There’s a reason why DPF has the number one, most popular, most diverse, most open blog in NZ, while blogs like those above follow in his wake hoovering up any crumbs and desperately trying to make themselves relevant.
That reason is that all comers are welcome to have their say. If they’re trolls then over a period they get demerited to the point of not being here any more.
In conclusion Trev – I’d suggest you adopt DPF’s model of inclusion and openness rather than the failing cul de sac model adopted your political brethren.

Trevor – you could always copy Lynn Prentice’s approach to moderation at The Standard, which is to ban pretty much anyone who disagrees with their views after calling them wingnuts (as mickysavage does – funny that), f*ckwits or accusing them of inhabiting the Kiwiblog sewer. It’s classy stuff, I’m sure you’ll agree, but at least it guarantees The Standard a loyal and faithful readership, and it stifles dissent. It might, however, be stretching the truth to suggest that the readership there is of the “intellectual giant” variety.
I think that you’ll find DPF’s approach is a lot more liberal, which I guess is why his is the #1 blog in the land.

You are right it that is the society we want. Have people campaigning for us who drives people to attempt or contemplate suicide and who sells jobs that dont exist to the underprivileged or disadvantaged.
Tuija we kicked them out last year. Started taking the country back from those types of people. Working with honest NZ loving people like the Maori party who seems about 7 times smarter than your lot and the greens when it comes to what it will take to bring NZ back to a country people loves living in.

Bok Classic car doesn’t get driven much changing head to run on unleaded fuel still good for 40mpg though. But yes needs an electric motor (not sure about sustanibilty of batteries though)

I met you to discuss a possibility of working together on something. I trusted and showed you that respect.
i have since refrained from making any comments about you or being negative. Once again, when you sit down with some-one an have a drink to discuss possibilities for business, then you show them respect an courtesy afterwards.

I travel he world and do and have done really fulfilling things for both the enviroment and for my fellow man.
The charities I support are entirely animal orientated because there are enough people out there who support humans.
You see there are environmentalists out there actually doing stuff, not just scaremongering.

I spend my evenings with friends and family eating dinners that taste divine and most people dream about.
In the last 30 years I have received medical treatment twice. Once when I cut myself out fishing. Another when I got wounded in a war. My blood pressure and cholesterol is way below people my age. I have a medical check up every year which I pass with flying colours. I used to smoke, but gave that away 8 years ago. I wonder, you have diabetes perhaps? Some sort of mineral deficiency anyway.
