John Key is going to have to step into the move to force mass medication of the nation’s bread with folic acid in seven weeks or so.
Minister of Food Safety Kate Wilkinson showed on Holmes’ QandQ TV show on TV1 this morning that she is out of her depth on this and completely in the hands of her officials. She came across as a country lawyer rather than a politicians when she talked about what she thought she couldn’t do “under the law”, though she agreed she had misgivings about possible health threats from adding folic acid. She has no political savoir-faire.
Holmes says this will increase the price of bread.
Is National mad? It is implementing a Labour decision and will take a hiding for it if this implementation goes ahead.
The bakers have offered to provide lines of bread with folic acid added. Surely that should be enough. And it is conceded the folic acid in the bread won’t be sufficient for pregnant women to safeguard against certain birth defects. Ireland and Britain have delayed implementation until the position is clear.
I take my hat off to Sue Kedgeley, Green though she may be, for an excellent appearance on this show. In the meantime, Key should take Wilkinson out of the Cabinet oven. She’s not baked yet, and may need another ten terms in the House before she is ready for an executive post in Government.

In 1998, a change in the New Zealand standard for Timber Treatment (as referenced in Acceptable Solution B2/AS1) allowed the use of untreated kiln-dried timber in wall framing.
Main factors in leaky buildings
No one factor was identified as the single cause of leaky buildings, but a number of causes were identified:
1. Modern cladding systems. ‘Mediterranean’ style buildings using monolithic cladding systems, such as textured wall surfaces made out of plaster on polystyrene or fibre cement sheet, are promoted as providing a sealed and waterproof outer skin and being low maintenance. But often, they have been used outside their specifications or have been installed incorrectly.
2. Inadequate construction that did not allow for deflection, drying and drainage or had insufficient durability and included features such as:
– recessed windows.
– flat roofs with narrow or no eaves.
– two or more stories.
– design features such as solid balustrades, complex roof design and envelope shapes where roofs frequently intersect with walls on upper floors.
– balconies that jut out from the walls.
– penetrations through the claddings.
3. Insufficient details in the Approved Documents (these contain Acceptable Solutions), which are produced to help people meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code. A number of inadequacies were identified, particularly in Acceptable Solution B2/AS1 (about timber durability) and E2/AS1 External Moisture (keeping the weather out). These have since been amended. Problems with the administration of the Building Code by councils and building certifiers have also been identified.
4. Lack of technical knowledge and skills when houses are designed, detailed and built – modern systems require a greater level of care and skill which has not always been applied.
5. Untreated kiln-dried framing timber is susceptible to rot when moisture penetrates the building envelope.
You can blame politicians but only partially because the building professionals – architects, builders and inspectors, should have bloody known. And many did, but no-one blew the whistle. Ya woulda thought the media would have got hold of it as well, esp the untreated timber bit. After all, it’s only common sense. But no-one did.
I’ve thought for a long time that in cases of extreme easily forseeable stupidity like this, the politicians responsible should be required to forfeit their parliamentary pensions. I would apply this rule to the idiot who allowed aggressive dog breeds into the country in the 80’s or 90’s and to the politicians who put through these changes as well. I mean FFS. Duh.
We can blame all sorts of organizations and people but the fact remains there will be over 100,00 leaking homes to be fixed and we need some leadership from Govt, that’s more than lip service.
People with no building skills relied on the “Building Profession” and that includes the rule makers to make buildings “fit for purpose” .
It screwball that if it was a consumer product sold at a store then the fit for purpose test would require remedy but not in the case of leaky homes.
Clarkson had an answer to help but the useless Nats. booted him out for a pretty boy.
That’s the answer and we all need to remember that when it next comes to vote because there is no one barracking for all those that are in this situation.

As a cycles guy, I knew what was coming economically. At this stage of the cycle, we get the “worst” … in droves. I was told a long time ago that the President of a county represents the collective consciousness of that country at that point in time. This was clear with Eisenhower, clear with JFK and clear with Ronald Reagan. With Eisenhower life was simple and uncomplicated and we had respect. JFK brought youth and energy and the USA was a beacon for the world … and we had respect. Reagan brought maturity and leadership … and the USA was respected. Bush, Sr. and Clinton saw a visible change in the respect – “Read my lips” was a lie … and Clinton took lies to a new level. Bush, Jr. eliminated any respect we may have had left; lied; started a war that killed a vast number of Americans and many others, as well. It served no purpose; we got nothing in return and spent many hundreds of billions of dollars we didn’t have. Bush’s mindless war succeeded in having the vast majority of the rest of the world hate us. Remember, each of these Presidents represented the collective consciousness of our country at the respective time. Bush, Sr. , Clinton and Bush, Jr. brought a successive level of lesser consciousness to the picture. Currently, we have apparently reached the level of being UNCONSCIOUS.
The following was sent to me by a friend who is a seasoned and wise observer and deeply cares about our country and the quality of people who make up this once respected nation. Just a final comment – there is nothing good that has ever come from being unconscious – it is merely a state where you have no control and no freedom of action.
A Parable?
Once upon a time, I was invited to the White House for a private dinner with the President. I am a respected businessman, with a factory that produces memory chips for computers and portable electronics. There was some talk that my industry was being scrutinized by the administration, but I paid it no mind. I live in a free country. There’s nothing that the government can do to me if I’ve broken no laws. My wealth was earned honestly, and an invitation to dinner with an American President is an honor.
I checked my coat, was greeted by the Chief of Staff, and joined the President in a yellow dining room. We sat across from each other at a table draped in white linen. The Great Seal was embossed on the china. Uniformed staff served our dinner.
The meal was served, and I was startled when my waiter suddenly reached out, plucked a dinner roll off my plate, and began nibbling it as he walked back to the kitchen.
“Sorry about that,” said the President. “Andrew is very hungry.”
“I don’t appreciate…” I began, but as I looked into the calm brown eyes across from me, I felt immediately guilty and petty. It was just a dinner roll. “Of course,” I concluded, and reached for my glass. Before I could, however, another waiter reached forward, took the glass away and swallowed the wine in a single gulp.
“And his brother Eric is very thirsty.” said the President.
I didn’t say anything. The President is testing my compassion, I thought. I will play along. I don’t want to seem unkind.
My plate was whisked away before I had tasted a bite.
“Eric’s children are also quite hungry.”
With a lurch, I crashed to the floor. My chair had been pulled out from under me. I stood, brushing myself off angrily, and watched as it was carried from the room.
“And their grandmother can’t stand for long.”
I excused myself, smiling outwardly, but inside feeling like a fool. Obviously I had been invited to the White House to be sport for some game. I reached for my coat, to find that it had been taken. I turned back to the President.
“Their grandfather doesn’t like the cold.”
I wanted to shout- that was my coat! But again, I looked at the placid smiling face of my host and decided I was being a poor sport. I spread my hands helplessly and chuckled. Then I felt my hip pocket and realized my wallet was gone. I excused myself and walked to a phone on an elegant side table. I learned shortly that my credit cards had been maxed out, my bank accounts emptied, my retirement and equity portfolios had vanished, and my wife had been thrown out of our home. Apparently, the waiters and their families were moving in. The President hadn’t moved or spoken as I learned all this, but finally I lowered the phone into its cradle and turned to face him.
“Andrew’s whole family has made bad financial decisions. They haven’t planned for retirement, and they need a house. They recently defaulted on a sub-prime mortgage. I told them they could have your home. They need it more than you do.”
My hands were shaking. I felt faint. I stumbled back to the table and knelt on the floor. The President cheerfully cut his meat, ate his steak and drank his wine. I lowered my eyes and stared at the small grey circles on the tablecloth that were water drops.
“By the way,” He added, “I have just signed an Executive Order nationalizing your factories. I’m firing you as head of your business. I’ll be operating the firm now for the benefit of all mankind. There’s a whole bunch of Erics and Andrews out there and they can’t come to you for jobs groveling like beggars.”
I looked up. The President dropped his spoon into the empty ramekin which had been his crème brulee. He drained the last drops of his wine. As the table was cleared, he lit a cigarette and leaned back in his chair. He stared at me. I clung to the edge of the table as if were a ledge and I were a man hanging over an abyss. I thought of the years behind me, of the life I had lived. The life I had earned with a lifetime of work, r isk and struggle. Why was I punished? How had I allowed it to be taken? What game had I played and lost? I looked across the table and noticed with some surprise that there was no game board between us.
What had I done wrong?
As if answering the unspoken thought, the President suddenly cocked his head, locked his empty eyes to mine, and bared a million teeth, chuckling wryly as he folded his hands.
“You should have stopped me at the dinner roll,” he said.

As banks’ assets got riskier – with subprime, Alt-A and all the rest – the banks actually borrowed more to hold these assets. The typical bank has only 4 cents of tangible equity for every dollar of assets. That means a 4% drop in asset value wipes out the equity – making the bank insolvent. The banking system is vastly undercapitalized. Throughout the 1990s, banks operated on leverage of about 16-to-1. Today, they operate on 25-to-one leverage…or higher!
And this, then, answers the great fundamental question that seems to baffle so many market commentators. Why aren’t the banks lending? People point to the trillions of dollars the government pumped into the economy, including on bank balance sheets.
The answer is that the bankers know they will need the money to cover losses from their toxic loan portfolios.
Of course it’s not just the stupid folic acid rule that Annette KING signed the nation up too, but also all the ridiculous United Nation’s Declarations that sundry Ministers have committed the Nation too. In totem they add up to an attack on our National Sovereignty , and are about to weaken it further with the endorsement of the Global Warming Scam. Other Nations also sign up to this bureaucratic stupidity ,but then pay only lip service or ignore them completely. Not so our ruling boffins they impose them on the proletariat with a zeal matched only by our Judicial system on what we are allowed to hear about Justice in Action.

Huge teams of demolitions experts, who had no problem wiring a building full of innocent New Yorkers to explode, hired in secret, worked every night for what had to be a year (and that’s only if they had a big enough crew) placing maybe 10,000 separate charges in each tower and another few thousand in WTC 7 (the smaller WTC tower that also collapsed, later in the day on 9/11).
And nobody notices.

John Key is going to have to step into the move to force mass medication of the nation’s bread with folic acid in seven weeks or so.
Minister of Food Safety Kate Wilkinson showed on Holmes’ QandQ TV show on TV1 this morning that she is out of her depth on this and completely in the hands of her officials. She came across as a country lawyer rather than a politicians when she talked about what she thought she couldn’t do “under the law”, though she agreed she had misgivings about possible health threats from adding folic acid. She has no political savoir-faire.
Holmes says this will increase the price of bread.
Is National mad? It is implementing a Labour decision and will take a hiding for it if this implementation goes ahead.
The bakers have offered to provide lines of bread with folic acid added. Surely that should be enough. And it is conceded the folic acid in the bread won’t be sufficient for pregnant women to safeguard against certain birth defects. Ireland and Britain have delayed implementation until the position is clear.
I take my hat off to Sue Kedgeley, Green though she may be, for an excellent appearance on this show. In the meantime, Key should take Wilkinson out of the Cabinet oven. She’s not baked yet, and may need another ten terms in the House before she is ready for an executive post in Government.

Well about time these useless Nat. ministers got a drubbing. These are people who are picked because they are nice, not because they are principled and not because of their ability but because they are part of the right gang. As I posted brfore their are only two ministers that are looking like well performing, Tony Ryall and Simon Power. the rest well, Heatley is captured by his housing ministry, English was always useless, Williamson didn’t know leaky buildings existed, Crusher failed at the first hurdle and so it goes on. 23 legislative changes in one bill almost all of which were ACT inspired and for which the Nats. claimed credit.
Just remember all this when you next go to vote.

You can blame politicians but only partially because the building professionals – architects, builders and inspectors, should have bloody known. And many did, but no-one blew the whistle. Ya woulda thought the media would have got hold of it as well, esp the untreated timber bit. After all, it’s only common sense. But no-one did.
I’ve thought for a long time that in cases of extreme easily forseeable stupidity like this, the politicians responsible should be required to forfeit their parliamentary pensions. I would apply this rule to the idiot who allowed aggressive dog breeds into the country in the 80’s or 90’s and to the politicians who put through these changes as well. I mean FFS. Duh.

We can blame all sorts of organizations and people but the fact remains there will be over 100,00 leaking homes to be fixed and we need some leadership from Govt, that’s more than lip service.
People with no building skills relied on the “Building Profession” and that includes the rule makers to make buildings “fit for purpose” .
It screwball that if it was a consumer product sold at a store then the fit for purpose test would require remedy but not in the case of leaky homes.
Clarkson had an answer to help but the useless Nats. booted him out for a pretty boy.
That’s the answer and we all need to remember that when it next comes to vote because there is no one barracking for all those that are in this situation.

A parable? or, the beginning of the end?
As a cycles guy, I knew what was coming economically. At this stage of the cycle, we get the “worst” … in droves. I was told a long time ago that the President of a county represents the collective consciousness of that country at that point in time. This was clear with Eisenhower, clear with JFK and clear with Ronald Reagan. With Eisenhower life was simple and uncomplicated and we had respect. JFK brought youth and energy and the USA was a beacon for the world … and we had respect. Reagan brought maturity and leadership … and the USA was respected. Bush, Sr. and Clinton saw a visible change in the respect – “Read my lips” was a lie … and Clinton took lies to a new level. Bush, Jr. eliminated any respect we may have had left; lied; started a war that killed a vast number of Americans and many others, as well. It served no purpose; we got nothing in return and spent many hundreds of billions of dollars we didn’t have. Bush’s mindless war succeeded in having the vast majority of the rest of the world hate us. Remember, each of these Presidents represented the collective consciousness of our country at the respective time. Bush, Sr. , Clinton and Bush, Jr. brought a successive level of lesser consciousness to the picture. Currently, we have apparently reached the level of being UNCONSCIOUS.
The following was sent to me by a friend who is a seasoned and wise observer and deeply cares about our country and the quality of people who make up this once respected nation. Just a final comment – there is nothing good that has ever come from being unconscious – it is merely a state where you have no control and no freedom of action.
A Parable?
Once upon a time, I was invited to the White House for a private dinner with the President. I am a respected businessman, with a factory that produces memory chips for computers and portable electronics. There was some talk that my industry was being scrutinized by the administration, but I paid it no mind. I live in a free country. There’s nothing that the government can do to me if I’ve broken no laws. My wealth was earned honestly, and an invitation to dinner with an American President is an honor.
I checked my coat, was greeted by the Chief of Staff, and joined the President in a yellow dining room. We sat across from each other at a table draped in white linen. The Great Seal was embossed on the china. Uniformed staff served our dinner.
The meal was served, and I was startled when my waiter suddenly reached out, plucked a dinner roll off my plate, and began nibbling it as he walked back to the kitchen.
“Sorry about that,” said the President. “Andrew is very hungry.”
“I don’t appreciate…” I began, but as I looked into the calm brown eyes across from me, I felt immediately guilty and petty. It was just a dinner roll. “Of course,” I concluded, and reached for my glass. Before I could, however, another waiter reached forward, took the glass away and swallowed the wine in a single gulp.
“And his brother Eric is very thirsty.” said the President.
I didn’t say anything. The President is testing my compassion, I thought. I will play along. I don’t want to seem unkind.
My plate was whisked away before I had tasted a bite.
“Eric’s children are also quite hungry.”
With a lurch, I crashed to the floor. My chair had been pulled out from under me. I stood, brushing myself off angrily, and watched as it was carried from the room.
“And their grandmother can’t stand for long.”
I excused myself, smiling outwardly, but inside feeling like a fool. Obviously I had been invited to the White House to be sport for some game. I reached for my coat, to find that it had been taken. I turned back to the President.
“Their grandfather doesn’t like the cold.”
I wanted to shout- that was my coat! But again, I looked at the placid smiling face of my host and decided I was being a poor sport. I spread my hands helplessly and chuckled. Then I felt my hip pocket and realized my wallet was gone. I excused myself and walked to a phone on an elegant side table. I learned shortly that my credit cards had been maxed out, my bank accounts emptied, my retirement and equity portfolios had vanished, and my wife had been thrown out of our home. Apparently, the waiters and their families were moving in. The President hadn’t moved or spoken as I learned all this, but finally I lowered the phone into its cradle and turned to face him.
“Andrew’s whole family has made bad financial decisions. They haven’t planned for retirement, and they need a house. They recently defaulted on a sub-prime mortgage. I told them they could have your home. They need it more than you do.”
My hands were shaking. I felt faint. I stumbled back to the table and knelt on the floor. The President cheerfully cut his meat, ate his steak and drank his wine. I lowered my eyes and stared at the small grey circles on the tablecloth that were water drops.
“By the way,” He added, “I have just signed an Executive Order nationalizing your factories. I’m firing you as head of your business. I’ll be operating the firm now for the benefit of all mankind. There’s a whole bunch of Erics and Andrews out there and they can’t come to you for jobs groveling like beggars.”
I looked up. The President dropped his spoon into the empty ramekin which had been his crème brulee. He drained the last drops of his wine. As the table was cleared, he lit a cigarette and leaned back in his chair. He stared at me. I clung to the edge of the table as if were a ledge and I were a man hanging over an abyss. I thought of the years behind me, of the life I had lived. The life I had earned with a lifetime of work, r isk and struggle. Why was I punished? How had I allowed it to be taken? What game had I played and lost? I looked across the table and noticed with some surprise that there was no game board between us.
What had I done wrong?
As if answering the unspoken thought, the President suddenly cocked his head, locked his empty eyes to mine, and bared a million teeth, chuckling wryly as he folded his hands.
“You should have stopped me at the dinner roll,” he said.

Oh no question Shunda, there was motive. Question is, they executed maneuvers in extremely well-guarded airspace that in normal circumstances resulted in fighter scrambles within minutes and yet, three times that day, nothing happened, for hours.
That’s just one of the many many many questions that haven’t been fully and I mean fully explored. Sure, Dan Rather has done a piece on it for the useful idiots, but you’re not one of those, are you? I know you’re not.

Hey Hurf, I don’t give a fuck what you think. I know that my understanding explains a whole hell of a lot about the world today and that’s proved by both predictive accuracy in terms of what’s happening next and also in after the fact facts which I suspected beforehand that are subsequently revealed.
I know that 911 was an important historical event that I rarely pay any attention to these days, which set me up to understand a whole spectrum of stuff that I never even saw before.
If you don’t want to play in that space, that’s your choice and I don’t care. It’s a shame in that you live in ignorance. You don’t know you do, but you do.

So do the Jews want to destroy Israel? Well clearly since:
a) They have nowhere else to go. [Clearly by your language you'd be p*ssed if some zionist a-hole comes to live next to you]
b) They are attached to the land … well hey, what drew them there in the first place? Oh yeah, they’d been praying to it for 2000 odd years
c) Nobody else likes them living there, but probably wouldn’t like them living anywhere else (this is pretty similar to point a + b) – reminds me of the Yiddush Policemans union by Michael Chabon

And I think the American people and govt were horrified at how vulnerable they really were. In reality reid, you can not scramble fighter jets every time a passenger jet deviates off coarse, you also can’t just start shooting down planes full of innocent people based on a hunch.
Bureaucracy moves too slow to stop radicals killing themselves and others as it’s happening, they can only try and make rules to stop future attacks.

Now Tim, seriously, I know from past contacts you are a seriously patriotic Israeli, but until you stop pretending that in order to be a friend of the Jewish people I need to be a friend of the zionists, you and I are never going to agree. If you can’t make that distinction then fine. However, if you can, and I think you can, then let’s make a better attempt to understand where each other is coming from and I think thereby we can actually make some useful headway because I sense you have an understanding which I don’t and which I’d like to understand. As I’ve said before, I am for the Jewish people but their govt which is zionist, really doesn’t serve their interests.
Tom’s posts from 2003 as I said were from a formative period and while I’ve grown in understanding from there I don’t rescind those views. You need to look at the distinction I make between the Jewish people and zionists to appreciate that.

Shunda, they did it 400 or 600 times in the 12 months preceeding 911. Within 10 mins.
That was standard operating procedure.

reid – In Israel I met religious Jew, non-religious Jew, pro-zionist Jew, anti zionist Jew, arab muslim (israeli + palestinian), arab christian (ditto), West Bank Settlers, left wing kibbutzniks, druze, bedouin, protesters, aid workers, Amos Oz (a highlight), politicians, shop keepers, taxi drivers, russians, Ethiopians, Yemenites. I am not an and have never been an Israeli citizen, only ever New Zealand and Australian.
I have never ever seen any evidence of any kind of cartel that would engineer any of the events you mention. If there ever was such evidence it would be splashed throughout haaretz, J-Post and Yedioth Ahronoth, as all other Israeli + Jewish scandals quickly are. And Israelis would be furious – as they were with Rabin’s murder.

As I said above Tim, I lost interest in 911 long ago and haven’t thought about it for years. NORAD failures were only an extremely minor aspect of that whole extraordinary day, try not to build your whole case around that. I only mentioned it because Shunda did. In hindsight I shouldn’t have because once you start analysing anything about it, it takes a lot of time and I lost interest in doing that a long time ago, because…
911 is merely a portal, it opens up lots of things, like this possible explanation of the recent Chinese riots. Of course, keep looking at Popular Mechanics as well, just make sure it’s not the only thing you look at.
