Thanks Toad for being a middle aged white boy trying to inflict guilt upon us all and accusing us all of oppressing the Maori. :)

The real story is all the bills that were not drawn out of the ballot and the stupidity of what was. So we will debate a holiday and a bill that will make no difference to slave labour? Does Parliament deliberately take the piss or do the left think it's funny to put in these silly bills? More disregard for our tax dollars!

Matariki sounds like a good idea but lets have a new day for it, Queens birthday is as much part of NZ's heritage.

Toad, you don't have to make everything an apologists wetdream with respect colonisation of NZ by the British. It happened, 200 years later the piss taking by the treaty grievance industry rolls on. NZ would be a great deal better off closing the bi-cultural myth and operating in a multi-cultural society with no race based prefernces.

Crusader said: And how about “Dominion Day”...

I've often wondered why that is a holiday for the legal profession and for South Canterbury, but not for anyone else.

KiwiGreg said: …and I dont recall EVER hearing about “Matariki” until the last decade or so.

Probably because, like most things Māori, under assimilationist policies Pakeha either tried to pretend they didn't exist or actively suppressed them. We even had the Tohunga Suppression Act on our statute books between 1907 and 1962:

Every person who gathers Maoris around him by practising on their superstition or credulity, or who misleads or attempts to mislead any Maori by professing or pretending to profess supernatural powers in the treatment of cure of any disease, or in the foretelling of future events, or otherwise, is liable on summary conviction before a Magistrate to a fine not exceeding twenty-five pounds or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding twelve months in the case of a second or any subsequent offence against this Act.

Please add my vote for a Matariki holiday in place of the Queen's Birthday (which isn't even her real birthday anyway).
And how about "Dominion Day" (late September, to commemorate NZ becoming an independent dominion rather than a colony) in place of Labour Day.
At least that would space out the public hols better over the year!

And what about the other legislation? Banning imports manufactured by children? Would Maryan Street rather that third world families become destitute rubbish dump scavengers, or sell their children into marriage or prostitution? Very feminist that. Yes, no child should have to work for a living, but in many countries a human right like that is a luxury. The answer is to encourage people to buy those products so that third world economies are enriched, not take away that income and make things worse.

You can make submissions on this here: http://dol.govt.nz/consultation/holidays-act-review/

It includes : Allowing all employers and employees to agree to transfer the observance of a public holiday listed in the Act to another day

Something similar is already done in some areas (eg Otago) with anniversary days where they can be taken at a more convenient day. This ensures employees get their quota of public holidays but avoids the payment complications that arise now and may help reduce the accumulation of lieu days.

The only thing I struggle with DPF is when a smart, intelligent, original thinker like yourself lets himself become nothing more than a cheer leader for the National party.

You seem to have developed a rather silly habit of attacking those who dare question Neville Key and the Nat's, it is rather reminiscent of the way the hard left go after one of their own who dares to disagree with the Nomenklatura.

How the hell can you say that any discussion around public holidays has nothing to do with shop trading hours?, to even suggest the two are not connected is disingenuous at best, the fact remains DPF that the Nat's want to do away with public holidays and replace them with annual leave.

We do not need any more annual leave, we did not need the fourth week introduced by the Labour government, what we need is better productivity and the return of the traditional Kiwi weekend where Mum and Dad have the time to care for their kids, take them to sport and make their own fucking coffee!

[DPF: You should try not inventing things. As far as I know National has no policy or plans to do away with national holidays. In fact sadly most National MPs are like you - totally conservative and resistant to change when it comes to a sensible regime for shop trading hours or public holidays.

And you may have missed me attacking today the Govt's decision on cellphones in cars and yesterday's criticism of John Key and Paula Bennett over their response to the Maori Welfare report.]
