Half Price Gym Memberships

August 24th, 2009 at 12:00 pm by David Farrar

FitnessNZ has its normal annual half price gym memberships promotion. These are for people who are not current gym members who want to join.

The number of places is limited. There seem to be around 700 places left, and you can click down by region to see the number of places per gym. For example 177 places left in Wellington, and nine of them for Bodyworks Thorndon.

Much better for obesity prevention than banning certain foods and adverts etc. And best fo all entirely private sector funded.

    It’s a good idea

Unfortunately between the jogging, the cycling and the kayaking I never seem to get enough time to join a gym either :) :)

If I was the gym owner I would put a clause in the contract to pass on music royalties. Or do a special deal with the Chinese government to use their ‘Exercise Music’ recordings.

What a disgrace. A government in deep deficit spending MORE of other people’s money.

    How inspiring.

Who is overwhelmingly going to accept this generous offer from taxpayers? By and large it will not be people not currently exercising. Why? Because the financial cost of exercise is the least costly part of getting fit. The time and effort and commitment required is enormous. $17/week membership is trivial compared to the time, sweat and tears of exercising. It is hard work. $17 is nothing.

Unless, of course, you love exercising – but then you’re already doing it.

So who is going to pick up this scheme? i) People currently at gyms looking for a subsidy to go join another one; ii) those that just got back from overseas or just moved towns iii) people who already exercise and substitute their road bike for a stationary bikes at a gym.

Divide the total cost of this scheme by the few dozen, maybe, who genuinely did start exercising because of it, and you get a colossal waste of money. Which is par for course for this and any government.

Add in the fact that there is almost no relationship bewteen obesity and health care costs – except at extreme obesity, the kind of obesity that would physically prevent you going to a gym – and you have a waste of money from start to finish.

[DPF: Oh dear you need to read the part about this being entirely private sector funded]

ben, where does it say the giovt is picking up the tab?

DPF, there is very little empirical evidence that exercise helps in weight loss, it often results in weight gain.

[DPF: Really. Cite some studies. Also exercise has many benefits other than weight loss]

I stand corrected. Rant withdrawn. It looked and sounded like a government promotion. Thanks :-)

I’ll save my rant for when gym subsidies do get underway. Next 5 years?

Why go to the gym when you can come and work on the farm for free and no coffee shops and fast food joints for miles.

From the man who brought you “paying a bill with a drawing of a spider”, the only appropriate reaction to people who suggest you join a damn gym is this.

    Phool

Go and practise standing on your head immediately, in fact I hear you should do it for hours on end to truly reap the benefits.

Don’t worry when you start to feel dizzy, don’t worry when you black out, just keep standing upside down for as long as you can.

MNIJ’s 2.28 post reckoning you can put on weight when you go to a gym is true – muscle is heavier than fat.

However you will still feel better and probably look better than before.

One problem is the obsession with the BMI index, which doesn’t seem to distinguish between muscle and fat.You can get yourself in good physical shape with regular workouts only to be told by your GP you have got to do something about your rising BMI and increasing weight. Sadly, some insurance companies also use this fukwitted index.

When considering continued gym membership after you’ve picked up the elements of weight work, balance fees against the cost of buying your own gear. This can save the time you would spend travelling to the gym. It’s harder to stay motivated though.
