One News Poll

August 2nd, 2009 at 6:17 pm by David Farrar

One News have had their first poll in four months. I’ve blogged the details at Curiablog.

Guyon Espiner commented that if the Government leads by this much during the worst recession since the 1930s, the fear for Labour must be what might happen next year when presumably the country has come out of recession.

The only surprise is that the poll did not put up Cunliffe as PPM.

BTW that does not mean parts per million but perhaps it should when referring to Cunliffe.

And this after a tough few weeks for the Govt. on other issues as well as the economy. The opposition are looking increasingly shambolic in the House, Goff is ineffective while Mallard sounds hysterical at times. Labour must be asking themselves what they can try now, as nothing is sticking. Surely they can’t be thinking this is still just a honeymoon and we will all come to our senses shortly?

For all those political commentators mulling over Helen Clark’s legacy, I think National continued high polling says it all.

On another topic, does anyone watch TVNZ news through their website living streaming…?
I have the problem of the feed cutting out after about 7 mins. Has anyone else have this problem…? TV3 streaming works fine – but I can’t stand Duncan Garner.

As high as 7% for Goff ? LOL. Fuck’s sake, scoring cheap points against the government during a recession should be like shooting fish in a barrel. Disastrous indeed for labour if they can’t get traction in times like these. Probably means they’ll not only lose the next election ( a certainty) but probably the one after that as well, as they wait for some young talent to fill the ranks. Currently they’ve got nothing there and none visible on the horizon.

It’ll be better in 12 months because dumbass Keynesians aren’t in charge. US, UK, Australia et al will be drowning in debt and covered in stagflation. So much for “stimulus” when throwing around cash and chaining your economy up with do-gooder environmentalism will kill any demand anyway.

And yes, phool, 56 minus 31 is 25. I worked it out in my head and everything.

“Guyon Espiner commented that if the Government leads by this much during the worst recession since the 1930s, the fear for Labour must be what might happen next year when presumably the country has come out of recession.”

That’s an incredibly simplistic “analysis” for a professional political commentator to offer. Even Mr Espiner must be able to understand that most NZers see Labour’s wasted nine years of financial profligacy (practised under Cullen’s self-proclaimed “prudent fiscal management”) as the great wasted opportunity of modern New Zealand. An opportunity to build future-critical infrastructure; to upgrade investment in educational resources; to amend taxation structures to reward enterprise, investment and saving; and to lighten the state’s suffocating share of the country’s GDP.

There’s a ready explanation for what to Espiner is a surprising level of support for the Government. Most New Zealanders do not blame National for the global recession, probably regard our Government as doing a better job to blunt its effects than governments in other western countries, and certainly regard the previous Labour Government as having left NZ less well equipped to deal with recession than any prudent manager would have done.

I’m so taken with that nice Mr Goff that I filled in the letter he put in my postbox and sent it off to him. I understand that it will cost him money from his taxpayer funded monies, but I thought that it was better that I cause it to be spent than let him waste it on something else.
I indicated- completely honestly- that I fully supported him, and I do. He is the best Leader of the Opposition we could have, and I hope that he stays in that job for years.

The Labour Party is under real pressure to remain relevant.

They continue to use tactics that were relevant at the start of the ‘Great Control Phase’.

    Leak, Lies, Smear.

The problem they have is one of constantly being found to be lacking in veracity.

The entire Electorate, has a right to the truth. They are unable to provide, let alone continue with the truth

This Labour Party needs to adjust its motto to “Mala fide – malum in se”,
(In bad faith – evil in itself ).

Did anyone notice the grotesque apparition on TV1 News reporting on this poll?

An elevated camera zoomed in on a huge head with moving mouth, atop a puny scrawny frame with strange waving enormous hands. Reminded me of a premature polled Hereford calf, born dead. Facial tendons were exposed in a Belsen like caricature.

I think it had a name – Guyon Espiner.

DPF, I think if you look at polling in the past 30 years, Labour tend to find themselves in power when the economy is recovering. I think it’s a hangover from the Lange Government that reversed the trend set by the Savage Government.

National inherited a struggling economy in 1990 and when the books were healthy, Labour got in. It could be the psychology of “OK, we’ve suffered enough, now share it around” that influences voters to vote Labour in.

If National don’t play it smart, their work to recover the economy could play straight into Labour’s lap.

Coming to power during a recession is often a good opportunity to instigate some changes that might be harder to justify otherwise. If you know that the economic cycle is due to improve within a year or two, you can then take the credit for your ideas and portray opponents as out of touch. In this respect the Key and Rudd governments and Obama administration are looking good for re-election.
