Grant needs to work on his profile
September 11th, 2009 at 9:00 am by David FarrarThis is from today’s Herald. The only small problem is that that they have run a photo of Chris Hipkins in the place of Grant Robertson, and they really are not twins!
Maybe Grant needs to pop around the gallery a photo of himself to help with future identification.
As a public service for Grant, Kiwiblog is pleased to run this photo of him, so people do not confuse him with Chris Hipkins in future.

Give Rotovegas a wide berth this weekend. It’s about to be invaded by small groups of cardigan-wearing androgynous types wearing large red badges.
[That top photo isn't Grant Robertson, it's Ritchie Cunningham, or Shaun Pollock]

I was amused to read a few weeks ago how the Otago Daily Times got confused about Chris Hipkins’ sex. The ODT takes a column written by John Armstrong of the Royal New Zealand O’Herald, which runs it without honorifics.
The ODT uses honorifics (which I approve of). So ‘Hipkins’ in the Herald became ‘Ms Hipkins’ for the readers of Otago-Southland.

No surprise really. Less than 50% of NZers are able to pick Phil Goff out of a lineup.

Most Wellingtonians wouldn’t know if the photo was Grant Robertson or not. He was invisible during the 2008 election campaign, and just sat back lazily expecting the Wellington trough feeders to carry him into office. Which they did. Idiots.

They all look like trough feeders to me.

getstaffed,
You know that just isn’t true. Or, if it is, it’s a damning indictment of Steven Franks’ campaign.
As for the mixup, Grant will be spitting mad about it. Chris Hipkins! CHRIS HIPKINS!!! I mean, Brendan Burns would be understandable. But Chris Hipkins!!!! Sheesh.

AG – I don’t live in the Wgtn Central electorate, but have plenty of friends/colleagues that do. Not one of them saw Robertson out campaigning door-to-door or anywhere other than on billboards. I need the fingers of more than one hand to count those same people who had Franks knock on their door for a chat. By all accounts Franks campaigned like a enthusiastic challenger, while Robertson sat on his arse awaiting his safe-seat destiny.

getstaffed,
(1) Where do your friends live? The door-knocking tactic is used to rally the base/win over waverers, not waste time on likely opponents, so your chances of being “knocked up” by one or other candidate depend heavily on your address;
Vote:(2) Which party do your friends support? I suspect their memory of who was “out and about” is driven by a confirmation bias – they are more likely to remember encountering the candidate they like than the one they don’t;
(3) I know Grant personally. You are wrong.

Does anybody else despise Phil Twyford as much as me?

AG –
(1) Kelburn, Northland, Mt Vic, Aro Valley, Central.
(2) Not sure of them all – not all work colleagues show their hand as it were. One friend is a National party member, but another colleague is the son of a union worker. My sense is that support was probably distributed across the political spectrum.
(3) Fair enough – personal opinions and all.
I can say with some conviction the prospect of me being “knocked up” by Robertson is enough to keep me from moving into his electorate

I am still getting over the fact that Wellington Central is peopled by creatures that would vote for Robinson against Franks.
Vote:People with Franks skills rarely make themselves available for public office. I thought it a queer result that Franks got beaten.

getstaffed>he was invisible during the 2008 election campaign
I live in Te Aro. There were plenty of (mostly young) National and Green supporters out and about, and a few ACT supporters. The Greens were on rollerblades around Oriental Bay one day, which I thought was kinda fun. I didn’t ever see anyone canvassing for Labour. I suppose when you’re financed by the racing industry, millionaires wanting diplomatic appointments, and the EPMU then you don’t need lots of volunteers.

These new MPs look sensible enough. But the dead hand of the 1980′s still hangs over that Party. They scream “privitisation” every time a reform is proposed no matter how proposterous the connection. But then take away Labour’s hard left positions – what policy positions remain?? . John Key’s National Party is what remains, such is the width of John Key’s appeal.

thank you for your public service David
I have nothing against gingas, some of my best friends are gingas, but, well, you know what I mean. Actually I have told Chris that if he keeps having sausage rolls for breakfast he is well on the way to looking like me!
as for getstaffed, where to start. The 50 or 60 street corner meetings, the thousands of doors knocked on, the 40 house meetings, the dozens of public meetings, the numerous electorate wide mailouts, and meetings with community groups and individuals. but hey, I am just getting on with being the MP, and working with and meeting loads of constituents. its fun I am working hard and, I think it is going well. cheers.

Tauhei – what is even more disgraceful is that the Nats put Stephen at 60 on the list – they are fools for doing so – especially when you look at some of the deadwood who were placed in front of him. Stephen would have made a very valuable contribution to both the National Party and to the Government.
As for Grant – well he is a completely invisible MP since the election (except in his representation of the Gay Community I suspect). The next time I expect him to pop up will be closer the the already ill-fates 2011 election.

When the country’s leading newspaper can’t get the correct photo of an MP (How hard is that to check) then why do we believe anything that say – perhaps the herald on Sunday will be issued on a wednesday!!

Shouldn’t this be considered a profile problem for Chris Hipkins as well?
I think this is the kind of thing that happens when you pay Australian undergrads to be the spellcheckers.

Phil Tryhard is a very negative, glass-half-empty sort of guy it seems. Not what Auckland or New Zealand needs or wants. His constant sniping and negativity in conjunction with the Mayor of North Shore is a major turnoff for the people of Auckland who actually want progress and positivity not endless whinging. When Williams comes to campaign time next year he will be reminded of this daily.

I recall seeing who I now identify as Chris Hipkins on the train after the Labour Party conference last year. He was devouring 2 meat pies. Grant, you may be right, one day he might look like you. I am sure your looks was well crafted from wine and cheese and not those rustic meat pies!

It has taken them nearly 10 months to admit to small mistakes (over light bulbs and showers) to we MIGHT have got it wrong. They just don’t get it and long may that continue.

Kelvin Davis looks like a cross between George Clooney and Bill Clinton in amongst that.
I don’t know what Jacinda Ardern’s “marketable” qualities are. Other than as Clint pointed out, a lifetime ahead of troughing. She will be a world leader in that for sure.
I’m just glad they are all on the “other” side. The centre-right’s future looks brighter with every focus of the eye on that lot.

Grant – Thanks for stepping into the ring. Good to hear that you worked hard getting elected. It’s not what I heard, but then I only have a couple of ears and a bunch of Wgtn central friends who felt the need to comment. Keep up the keen representation then.
