A universal cellphone charger
October 24th, 2009 at 3:00 pm by David FarrarAbout time! Reuters reports:
Ever forget your phone charger and no one around has the same kind of handset?
Have a drawer full of useless old phone chargers at home?
Breathe a sigh of relief.
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations’ telecom arm, said on Thursday it had given its stamp of approval “to an energy-efficient one-charger-fits-all new mobile phone solution.
“Every mobile phone user will benefit from the new Universal Charging Solution (UCS), which enables the same charger to be used for all future handsets, regardless of make and model,” the ITU said in a statement.
I want one. In fact I want three – one for home, office and the car!

I still can’t work out what is wrong with USB, as hammers go, it’s a pretty good one and big enough for this nut.

You’ve been able to buy a car charger at most gas stations (I’ve had one for a while) called ‘e-fuel‘ with a kind of hexagonal attachment at one end that has many different types of plugs that fit Nokia, iPod, PSP/Portable, USB, and mini USB. I’ve just had a look and they have hubs or attachments for most phones and devices (including Sony, Samsung, etc).
Quite useful.
Also, I noticed when I was at Britomart last year they had a kind of kiosk where you could put in some coins and charge your phone for 10 mins. It has plugs for all the popular phones. It was on the top floor near Subway.

So now in small print somewhere on the back of the package for the new ‘phone will reside the words “Charger sold separately”.

” In fact I want three – one for home, office and the car! “.
Right on !!!.. And it has taken how long for the CEO’s to wake up to this ??..
Planned waste is still with us ..
Having said that , I am not a greeny. It is just plain common sense.

Honestly, this is the third time in what, 2 years they’ve made this “major announcement”.
Do we all have such a short attention span?

Hell yeah. They could stop selling chargers with phones and similars devices all together. Emagine how many hundreds of forty foot containers of chargers per year they would even have to make any more.
brilliant
