  1. Grant Michael McKenna (1,058) Says:

Everything that you enjoy is either illegal, immoral or fattening.
Labour says Bill English’s behaviour is illegal and immoral.
So if we can fatten Bill, will they recognise him as a good thing?

  2. big bruv (9,837) Says:

I missed Comrade Bradford’s valedictory speech last night, did that mad wimin Delahunty sing again?

    [DPF: Heh yes]

  3. Murray (8,734) Says:

I’d like to see less “Labour on…” posts.

Their opinions are always grossly hypocritical and entirely irellivant. No one really gives a toss what they think and its just another excuse for their paod trolls using assumed names to squeal the party line. Lets face it Dave, you’re catering to 4% at best.

  4. Murray (8,734) Says:

I didn’t miss it at all BB.

  5. 3-coil (1,064) Says:

Grant (8:18am), I heard that Flo and Eddie song on the radio yesterday, for the first time in decades – spooky!

“..It’s easy these days to find support and help in becoming vegan.

The selection of meat and dairy analogs has grown remarkably in just a few years.

There are plenty of places to find nutrition advice for vegans and an inspiring variety of great vegan cookbooks.

For those who feel as though they might be the only vegan in the world—or at least in their home town—social support is a click away on the internet.

But, it still feels a lot easier to most people to keep eating animal products.

These foods are familiar and, most importantly, they are cheap.

Making animal foods more expensive is one way to encourage Americans to reduce their consumption.

There are plenty of ways to do that.

We can eliminate government price supports for animal food production ..

.. and also outlaw some of the inhumane farming practices that serve to keep production high and costs low.

And in Sunday’s New York Daily News, ethicist Peter Singer recommended another option that has multiple benefits: ..

..A 50 percent tax on meat.

Because of the health risks associated with meat consumption as well as the environmental damage caused by meat eating ..

.. Singer says that meat eaters impose costs on others.

“They push up our health insurance premiums, increase Medicare and Medicaid costs for taxpayers, pollute our rivers ..

.. threaten the survival of fishing communities in the Gulf of Mexico, push up food prices for the world’s poor, and accelerate climate change.”

Because people often shift to increased chicken consumption when they reduce their intake of red meat ..

.. Singer says we need a tax on all meat—not just beef.

It’s hard to think of any reasonable argument against this..”

And if you’re a carnivore, congratulations, you DON’T need a fucking support group or a group hug to validate your existence.

  13. Swiftman the infidel (329) Says:

Is it possible that philu’s mental retardation is caused by nutritional deficiency by being vegan?

  14. philu (10,919) Says:

“..And if you’re a carnivore, congratulations, you DON’T need a fucking support group or a group hug to validate your existence..”

do you just have to grab a gun..and go and shoot something..?

and yes..the socialising aspects of going vegan can be troublesome..

cos’ the longer you are one..

the less the appeal of going sitting in a group..

where there are the smells/sights of others eating dead animals..

and this is very socially limiting..in a mainly carnivorous culture..

    it also means..no dinner party invitations..no bbq’s..

the smells that entice others..in meat-cooking restuarants..

    ..increasingly repel..

so..yes..there is a special joy to be had from being in a large group of vegans..

    ..enjoying a vegan-banquet..

and part of that joy is because you can totally relax..

you don’t need to look at each dish..with a raft of questions in your head..

and can just revel in the tastes..

Byron Kelleher received a 2 month suspended jail sentence in france…

Kelleher had been drinking at a bar in Toulouse when he bumped into a Porsche with two friends aboard his Peugeot 308.

He exchanged words with the driver and then drove off.

The Porsche gave pursuit, following Kelleher to a crossroads, where a fight broke out. Two passersby intervened, and Kelleher and his friends reportedly attacked them too.

One of the passersby happened to be a boxer, who dodged Kelleher’s punch and hit back, knocking him out for a few moments.

He he, I don’t think the passerby needed to be a boxer to take out kelleher , who was too drunk to give a breathalyser test. BUt, that just adds to the sorry story.

I bet Kelleher didn’t even remember the incident. I’d love to have seen his face as his actions were described to him after sobering up. It would be like the devil took over his body for a few hours and he is responsible.

  17. Pete George (12,302) Says:

A quick look at nature would suggest that meat eating is quite common and normal. It may be a bit tough on the menu, but humans probably wouldn’t have the mental capacity to contemplate the morals of meat eating if they hadn’t eaten meat.

  18. Murray (8,734) Says:

I think years of hardcore drug abuse have played their part swiftman.

Audrey Young: Key plans pitch on free trade deal to Japanese
Don’t suppose there’s any easy way to find out what the current conditions of trade between the two countries are?

I think you will find Stephen that there are huge trade barriers against imports to Japan in the form of quotas and tarrifs particularly agricultural goods. One of Fonterra’s mosty profitable bits of business has been holding the tarrif quota for cheese and milkfat which have been a licence to print money and have been a target for other dairy exporters since Fonterra wasformed. Beyond the quota, imports attracted tarrifs in the region of 150% so the margin available to the holder of the quota was enormous. This has also been a sore point with importers who felt that they should havebeen able to purchase in NZ and bring the product into Japan and take advantage of the quota.
A FTA would open up that trade and remove the distortions. It would also give NZ a huge advantage until other countries caught up and got FTAs of their own.
Overall though I think the trade balance is heavily weighted in favour of Japan particularly because of the motor vehicle trade.

We can eliminate government price supports for animal food production ..

We don’t have subsidies on meat in this country. The do in the US, however they are intertwined with tariffs so the effect of removing them is likely to make them cheaper, with more access to cheaper foreign meat.

Why should we tax meats anyway? The presence of larger amounts of meat in our diets has led to longer lives and better health.

  31. Jack5 (2,486) Says:

Careful in your comments Philu. We will deduce from them benefits and drawbacks of vegetarianism.

Here’s another drawback. If you were in lifeboat, out of food, and deciding which one person to eat to save everyone else’s life, you would pick a vegetarian if there was one aboard. Better than eating a carnivore.

In pioneer days, we might have been able to sell vegetarians at a good price to the indigenous people, eh?

  32. Jack5 (2,486) Says:

Philu, if those pioneers were selling vegetarians to the indigenous folk, do you think they would have got more for organic product, that is raised free of marijuana and other additives?

  33. thedavincimode (2,769) Says:

“Are pilotless, remote-controlled drones that fire hellfire missiles from 35,000 feet ‘heroic’?”

Well of course not. But they are very handy.

  34. RightNow (3,915) Says:

I had a delicious fillet steak on Sunday night, I let it age for 3 days first and then cooked it rare. Deglaced the pan with red wine and added cracked peppercorns and cream, then reduced it to make the sauce. Ate it with nothing else (peppercorns count as the vegetable) and enjoyed every mouthful, then licked the plate clean. I’m thinking next time I get fillet I might make a beef Wellington, I can make my own chicken liver pate for it. Damn, made myself hungry.

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  38. Chthoniid (1,709) Says:

@Jack5- technically Phool is a vegan, not a vegetarian.

Vegetarians will still consume and use animal products (cheeses, sometimes eggs, various leathers). Various cultures have had vegetarian diets that have persisted for centuries. The human body can basically tolerate a wide range of diets, and it is really only the extremes that create problems. One extreme is the very heavy meat+fats diet that has become popular in Western countries- when combined with the sloth of modern living, chances of having someone having to go up your arse with a scalpel to cut out cancer from your bowel is pretty high. Another extreme is veganism, where you have to work pretty hard to get the missing proteins, vitamins and minerals into your diet.

Fwiw, I was a vegetarian (not vegan) for over twenty years and have only really added fish back into the diet recently. It’s just food, not a religion…

  39. RightNow (3,915) Says:

phlu, you are so wrong. When I worked as a cook in my younger days I would happily eat raw beef (thinly sliced off the striploin). I don’t get that much high quality beef through my kitchen these days but a decent steak is delicious just sealed.
The sauce is a way to capitalise on the delicious juices that gather in the pan, you deglace it to get all those flavours and not waste them.

  40. Repton (769) Says:

Question: are you allowed to use your cellphone in the car while parked? I heard someone saying no.

You can, but remember that “stopped at traffic lights” does not equal “parked”. Also remember that you cannot park on the motorway.

Perhaps you are getting confused with drinking? I believe it is illegal to drink alcohol if you’re sitting at the wheel of a parked car (although ICBW).

  41. stephen (4,058) Says:

Fwiw, I was a vegetarian (not vegan) for over twenty years and have only really added fish back into the diet recently.

    that’s bordering on sublime…

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  44. Pete George (12,302) Says:

    a bland/tasteless ‘nothing’..

Depends. Lamb is bland, mutton has more flavour. Especially when it is aged properly (not wrapped as soon as they can in a supermarket) – if you hang it for a week it is much better, more flavour and more tender.

  45. RightNow (3,915) Says:

phlu, I’m an omnivore, I’ve eaten many many types of food. I have no problem eating vegan dishes, or even preparing them. I’m just not ruling anything out. I have no issue with people choosing whatever diets they like, it’s their body, their taste buds.

  46. thedavincimode (2,769) Says:

“someone having to go up your arse with a scalpel to cut out cancer from your bowel”

Awesome, I followed a link to Public Address, and there at the top was a banner ad with Bill English on it advertising the TV7 thing. Go Public Address, give the Nats some advertising!

  48. Chthoniid (1,709) Says:

You can’t travel in Asia be a strict vegetarian or vegan. Seriously, you’d starve and cause great offense to the people you visit. Curiously, when I traveled in China and the local hosts worked out I ate fish (only), the retort was often ‘aah, you must be very smart’.

Fish is also much more palatable than red meat (especially if you haven’t eaten red meat in 20 years), and I prefer wild meat to farmed. (You’re likely to get kangaroo or crocodile at my summer BBQ than beef steak). The health benefits of fish are well documented. And fish fits easily into the cooking styles we use (often Mediterranean or Asian). One of my favourites is a burrida- a Genoese fish stew. Chunks of fish, Mediterranean vegetables, oil and a tomato base.

NZ also has a lot of fish species that are quite palatable- there’s more than just snapper and hoki out there :)

  49. Adolf Fiinkensein (2,151) Says:

Hoki is crap. The two most under rated species are Blue Moki and Blue Mao Mao. Under $20/kg for fillets and delicious.

  50. philu (10,919) Says:

    mm..??

    (worth tinking about..!..eh..?..)

and rightnow..i wasn’t talking about freedom of choice..

i am just noting the external forces that will force our country into changes as yet unimaginable..

  74. Hurf Durf (2,855) Says:

Phool’s disjointed dribblings lead me to conclude that a vegan diet leaves you with a brain like sodden cabbage. Apt, really.

  75. thedavincimode (2,769) Says:

Yes Rightnow. But not the sort of magpie you’d want in the house.

    Its best like this.

  76. reid (9,988) Says:

Liarbore demands equal airtime from TVNZ.

This is so funny. These scum subverted TVNZ to their own ends for their entire execrable regime and now they complain about an arms-length commercial decision in which there was no arm-twisting whatsoever.

Liarbore are master propagandists and as we all know, master propagandists like to loudly accuse their opponents of that which they themselves are most guilty.

If I was the Minister of Broadcasting I’d be instructing TVNZ to publicly release all of their correspondence with Liarbore.

  77. malcolm (2,000) Says:

Ok, apologies to anyone who thinks talking about cooking and food is a special type of wankery:

    Asparagus Risotto.

It would be rude not to. There’s so much good cheap asparagus around at the moment. Make a stock from the bottom of the stalks (snap, don’t cut) and the peelings (you do peel your asparagus, don’t you?). As little water as possible. Give it a good mash as it goes. Do it quickly so you don’t lose the colour. Thinly slice the good stalks and separate the heads. Give them a bloody good wash as there’s always a bit of dirt in the heads.

Add a good chicken stock to the asparagus stock to make up the volume. Cook your risotto as usual. An obscene amount of olive oil and butter to start. 1/3 bottle of white wine. Drink some as you go. Plenty of sage. Dangerous amount of salt and pepper at the start. When the risotto is done, add the heads then whip in the Parmesan and finish with another big lump of butter. Season again if required. Then add the sliced stalks. They’ll cook while you serve and pour another glass of wine.

Serve on a plate. Piled in the middle. Not a bowl. That’s just wrong.

If you’ve been lucky it will be the most vibrant green colour and will taste divine. If you’ve cooked it for a women you’re not married to, you’ll probably get your end away.

  78. Luc Hansen (3,377) Says:

mmm lunch cooking. Leftover mussel chowder, sans mussels, but beefed up instead with strips of organic dry-cured bacon.

I think one of the solo Mum’s at Wriggle and Rhyme fancies me – she gave me her phone number for joint outings. Could be completely innocent. But I hope not ;-)

  79. philu (10,919) Says:

“..now they complain about an arms-length commercial decision in which there was no arm-twisting whatsoever..”

    dunno about that..

mallard said in parliament the other day that english called someone at tvnz (an ‘editer ‘ i think..)..a ‘fucking cnut’..

during the wrangling over the content/making of this puppy..

and also that news staff at the channel complained about the whole shabby exercise/abuse of power..

Finally! A right-winger fronts up on environmental issues:

  81. reid (9,988) Says:

    “dunno about that..”

Depends who you prefer to believe at this stage doesn’t it Phil?

People who don’t have a track record of lying, or those who do?

BTW, those “news staff,” firstly, who are they and secondly I’ve reviewed Mallard’s Parliamentary questions and he doesn’t mention that and thirdly, once you’ve named them, let’s see which party they belong to.

  82. philu (10,919) Says:

“..secondly I’ve reviewed Mallard’s Parliamentary questions and he doesn’t mention that..”

the speaker wouldn’t allow the question..

“..Depends who you prefer to believe at this stage doesn’t it Phil?..”

    yeah..guess so..

do you believe the news editor person..who mallard said said that english had called him a ‘fucking cnut’..

(i mean..why would he make that up..?..)

    or do you believe english..?

    who..if he did say it..

has every reason to deny it..

    eh..?

    (how long do you need..?..)

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  83. reid (9,988) Says:

I don’t care whether he said that or not phil. Why do you imagine that proves anything one way or the other?

  84. philu (10,919) Says:

    oh..ok reid..

    carry on..!

    eh..?

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  85. thedavincimode (2,769) Says:

    Keep them coming Malcolm.

    And Maggie:

I have no doubt that English did use that spicey epithet. Why wouldn’t you when addressing anyone that had anything to do with what TVNZ masquerades as news?

    How are those recipes going?

  86. MeneerCronje (47) Says:

Ah yes – vegan, an old native American word that means “I don’t hunt so good” :-)

  87. thedavincimode (2,769) Says:

    Outstanding.

  88. Brian Smaller (3,409) Says:

    “rightnow..

it would seem you have never eaten high-cuisine..vegan..

cooked by practitioners of their art..for many decades..

    that’s bordering on sublime…

So is dirt soup when all you normally eat is cardboard.

  89. wreck1080 (2,009) Says:

Finally government spending has come to a head. From Stuff..

Treasury secretary John Whitehead warns New Zealand net debt could reach $2 trillion by 2050 if government spending follows historic trends.

Growth in government spending has averaged 6.3 per cent a year for the past 15 years, in total more than 20 per cent higher than economic growth, at 5.2 per cent over the same period.

In economics 101, there is a mathematical rule that over the long term an organisation cannot exceed the countries economic growth rate.

On the curent course, the government is set to eat the entire economic output of NZ. Taxes would need to be 100% just to support government programmes.

THis shows just how badly NZ governments have performed over the last 15 years.

The councils have the same issue : their spending is increasing faster than economic growth. eg, Tauranga council are putting up rates 10% annually for the next 3 years. Maybe more after that.

Public sector spending is unsustainable, and they must pull their fancy heads in , and concentrate on core functions.

  90. philu (10,919) Says:

    do tell..!..brian..!

  93. Luc Hansen (3,377) Says:

Words of wisdom from Michael Laws:

“Unless you have held a baby in your arms as a parent, you are not a fully functioning member of society.”

    Hmmm

  94. senzafine (453) Says:

Phil. I call people fucking cunts on a daily basis. This proves nothing aside from the fact that i find expressing harsh expletives immensly satisfying. ;)

  95. philu (10,919) Says:

yes..but this is the deputy prime minister…speaking to a video-editor..

a slight imbalance of power there..?

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  96. Patrick Starr (3,662) Says:

“do you believe the news editor person..who mallard said said that english had called him a ‘fucking cnut’..”

But Phool – you said Bill English had poor judgement

  97. senzafine (453) Says:

phil – not particuarly. I’ll happily call anyone a cunt. When it comes to calling people cunts, I believe in a blanket no discrimination policy.

    :D

  98. thedavincimode (2,769) Says:

    Oh dear Luc.

Not only do you take notice of what Laws says, but you read it and then take the time to post a link?

    Hmmm.

  99. philu (10,919) Says:

“..Fwiw, I was a vegetarian (not vegan) for over twenty years and have only really added fish back into the diet recently. It’s just food, not a religion…”

    clintoidd..the distance between carnivore..and (dairy/animal product) eaters/skin-users vegetarians..is quite short..

far shorter than the distance from vegetarian to vegan..

so it is understandable..that you have little knowledge of the changes possible..

    and that’s right..’it’s just food..not a religion’..

so why do so many made insecure by the challenges to them inherent in vegan ideas..?

    claim/attack on those grounds..?

    and make that false accusation..?

as you are one who attacks vegans on those grounds..

    ..perhaps you could answer that..?

  100. MeneerCronje (47) Says:

There’s plenty of room for all God’s creatures. Right next to the mashed potatoes.

  101. Steve (2,158) Says:

    Phool,
Wait for a photo posted by Chthoniid in the morning.
I am hoping it will be about how not to lecture a crocodile on turning vegetarian/vegan

  102. noskire (539) Says:

phil, fwiw, there is also a vacant space between moron and muppet, a space that you quite happily try to invade. What’s with that?

  103. Hurf Durf (2,855) Says:

People think the Grand Canyon is a natural phenomenon. They are incorrect; it is actually an ancient civilisation’s tribute to the cavernous hole in Phool’s skull.

  104. Viking2 (6,120) Says:

Food Wisdom for vegans and vegetarians.

Grass is a plant which also happens to be food to cows and sheep. So cows and sheep eat grass. Cows and sheep do not eat meat. therefore cow meat and sheep meat must be converted grass. As vegetables are also food for the same animals as well as humans and those animals eat both grass and veges then we must conclude that meat is a vegetable product therefore its fine for humans to eat meat from grazing animals.

  105. Viking2 (6,120) Says:

Finance Minister Bill English said the Government would not go back on its promise to retain entitlements but the next round of tax cuts would not be happening in the short term.

So confirmation the English is not going to let us tax cuts until just before the next election.

Time he went somewhere else to play.

  106. Hurf Durf (2,855) Says:

Shitday travels to Israel to “report” on the Pali’s unwarranted encroachment on East Jerusalem, can’t imagine how that will turn out.

  107. thedavincimode (2,769) Says:

    MeneerCronje: you’re on a roll!

  108. Chthoniid (1,709) Says:

    @thedavincimode

Good grief. You can almost see the sweat running down his beak as his boney little claws assault the keyboard in his frenzied … whatever it was – does anyone know what he was saying?

It was quite entertaining for a while today, but I’ve already given up on reading the rants. After a while it just feeds his delusions of cogency and relevance.

I like your clever magpie metaphor anyway…

  109. philu (10,919) Says:

“..It was quite entertaining for a while today, but I’ve already given up on reading the rants..”

    aww..!! clintoiid..!

    having had yr ‘made-up’s’ exposed..

you fall back on that cry of the defeated..

‘i’m not reading it’..which we all know is a pile of horseshit..eh..?

    (here’s a thought..!

take a pic of yourself uttering that cry of defeat..

you could call it:..’vanquished animal screams its’ anguish’..

    (maybe a poster..?..)

  110. jabba (280) Says:

philu .. I better not tell you what I did last night then.
    jabba(beer/wine/shots/meat/brandysnaps@the barandgrill.co.nz)

  111. Chthoniid (1,709) Says:

Jeez Phool, haven’t you got it yet? The only debates you win are in your own Quixotic fantasy world.

You pretend to be an environmentalist from behind your keyboard, when I’m putting my arse on the line in wildlife smuggling spots in Asia. You imagine your little jaunt as a tourist is equivalent to working in wilderness areas in remote parts of China with different ethnic communities.

I regard you as a joke. That’s all. You’ve got no credibility and have no respect from me. Get over yourself.

  112. philu (10,919) Says:

  113. philu (10,919) Says:

Say no more phool, try a bong or seven of sleeping grass I can deliver you some if you like you wack job. PLEASE DO NOT hold up another chemist shop as they don’t stock it!

  115. Patrick Starr (3,662) Says:

“i used to do heroin and cocaine mixed together..intravenously..repeatedly..”

but just remember folks, MEAT is bad for ya….!

  116. dad4justice (7,339) Says:

Patrick, maybe phool is a blood and bone bonger?

  117. Luc Hansen (3,377) Says:

I see you guys are still intent on keeping the tone of debate somewhere between kindergarten and the gutter – with the odd notable exception.

Anyway, take a look at the video on this link.

    http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Front_Page.html

It’s the front page of an online newspaper so I don’t know how long it will stay up, but there is a video on there which demonstrates the best reason for Nato (ie the US and the rest) to get the hell out of the Middle East altogether – aside from the fact that it’s all just so plain wrong! The reason is simple – the occupation, whether it be Iraq, Afghanistan, increasingly Pakistan and, by proxy, Palestine, is fostering ever more fundamentalist extremism. It’s a never ending circle.

And it seems, according to an article below the video, that Britain is no longer so cocksure Obama will commit more troops to the quagmire. My guess is the delay, a very bad look for any leader, is actually being spent trying to work out how to extract themselves with a minimum of loss of face. Very tricky, but nothing a few thousand more dead civilians can’t cover for.

The Cold War is over; just pay for the oil and gas and keep the troops at home.

  118. Hurf Durf (2,855) Says:

I agree. Let’s pull out of the Middle East. Let’s get mass nuclear and hydrogen power and let’s watch and laugh as the Arabs slaughter each other anyway. Might even make a few bob selling all sides arms. Let them have their shitty little caliphate on the understanding that any attack on the West would result in the region being painted an interesting shade of crescent red.

I mean, it’s not like Bammy’s Afghan strategy is any good.

  119. Patrick Starr (3,662) Says:

cant see anyone making you stay Luc

  120. thedavincimode (2,769) Says:

    heroin/cocaine mixed intravenously???

Won’t that make your feathers fall out????

Now stop blogging and get back to those recipes. The show must go on!!
